“Yom Kippur”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; but the Word of our אֱלֹהִים - Elohim shall stand FOREVER”. Yeshayahu - Isaiah 40:8. (JPS).

Introduction:

Yom Kippur” is the holiest day of our Hebraic Year, as it is our “Day of Atonement” and one of the Scripturally commanded Feasts of יְהוָה - the LORD. “Yom Kippur” is a solemn feast on focusing on our need for seeking forgiveness and pray for a covering for our sin’s.

During the days of the Tabernacle and Temples, it was the one day of the year when the high priest entered into the “Holy of Holies”. He would bring blood of sacrifices, first for his own sins and those of his family, then for all Israel.

The “Holy of Holies” was a curtained-off area of the “Tabernacle” or the “Temple” containing the “Ark of the Covenant” representing the very presence of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God). If the priest did not do his service according to אֱלֹהִים (God’s) commands, he could die. Sin is serious to אֱלֹהִים and thus the Day of Atonement is a very serious day.

The Hebraic people prepare for Yom Kippur during the 40 days preceding it. Beginning in the Hebrew month of Elul, Hebraic hearts turn inward with self-examination before אֱלֹהִים - Elohim to identify, confess and repent of their sins!

Our Hebraic tradition teaches that on the first day of the month of Tishrei - which is “Rosh Hashanah”, the “head of the year” אֱלֹהִים pronounces judgment on each person of the Hebraic faith for the following year. Ten days later, on “Yom Kippur”, He seals it!

The period between the two holidays is known as the Days of Awe, and during them, introspection reaches its most intense of the season, culminating on Yom Kippur.

Biblical instructions for observing the Day of Atonement are found in Vayikra - Leviticus chapters 16 and 23 as well as in Be’midbar - Numbers chapter 29, and it includes following things that we are to do!

Fast for 25 hours.

Come together to your Synagogue. (If unable due to a health situation etc, pray at home.)

Bring sacrifices and offerings.

Do no work whatsoever.

Afflict ourselves.

The Torah is not specific regarding what it means to afflict oneself. Of course we Hebrews will fast from food and water for 25 hours on “Yom Kippur” and also abstain from various pleasures. We will do no work whatsoever on “Yom Kippur”, as it is the most important day of the year to attend your Synagogue.

The final element of observing the “Day of Atonement” should not have been possible after “Second Temple” was destroyed in 70 A.D., as the sacrificial system ceased. However, today’s Hebraic community we substitute Temple sacrifices with prayer for repentance (teshuvah) and tzedakah, which means works of righteousness, as well as charity!

Yom Kippur” is our most solemn day to acknowledge it is a day to acknowledge the high cost of our sin and stand before יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים - the LORD God, and our beloved יְהוָה will provide the faithful who wholly repents with all their hearts and soul, that He will provide a provision for forgiveness, and a full cleansing!

The question some have asked is why is it only on “Yom Kippur” we can receive forgiveness. Well the truth is that we can call upon our Heavenly Father at any time and ask Him for forgiveness, and if you have been totally sincere, he will forgive you, blessed be He!

May the Name of יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים - the LORD God, be praised and glorified, forever!

In Conclusion, a Question to Deepen the Conversation:

Which part of this Tanach study or possibly a particular line or statement within it has touched you the most? And how do you feel about spending more time studying our beloved Tanakh? I pray that you are doing well as a faithful Hebrew, and אֱלֹהִים - Elohim willing you are upholding as many as possible of our blessed Mitzvoth’s?

I am well aware that the modern world sadly contains too many deviations as well as problems that seem to get in the way of our Hebrew lifestyle. Yet worse than that, these days there are far too many enticements, which can so easily throw many off track, and I know that has happened far too much. Thus, if there are struggles that are taking place in your life, be it at this or at any time, I am well aware that sadly it can often have a terrible and a cruel effect upon your life?

Dear reader, please remember this, pray for peace and solitude in your life, and then work on keeping as calm as possible and learn to improve your life, for אֱלֹהִים,  בָּרוּךְ אֱלֹהִים - Bless Elohim, He is always there and ready to help and guide you!

This site was originally set up for those who needed to return to our blessed and wonderful faith, thus be wise and work on your faith and pray at least three times a day, and always seek אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s guidance!

Remember what אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, blessed be He, said the following via a number of our prophets...

Return unto Me, and I will return unto you, saith צְבָאוֹת- יְהוָהthe LORD of hosts”. Mal’a’chi - Malachi 3:7. MEC).

And Remember ...

Enjoy your Sabbath Rest, Shabbat Shalom!

אֲנִי יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶםבְּחֻקּוֹתַי לֵכוּוְאֶת-מִשְׁפָּטַי שִׁמְרוּוַעֲשׂוּ אוֹתָם

“I am אֱלֹהֵיכֶם יְהוָה (the LORD your God); walk in My statutes, and keep Mine ordinances, and do them; and hallow My Sabbaths, and they shall be a sign between Me and you, that ye may know that I am אֱלֹהֵיכֶם יְהוָה - YaHVaH Elohim”. Yechezkel - Ezekiel 20:19-20. (JPS).
