With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.
The Hebrew’s are recognized as the world’s oldest monotheistic religion. Our roots trace back to the ancient land known historically as Canaan, which corresponds to modern-day Israel and Palestine.
Our
Hebrew texts:
The foundational texts of our faith are the ‘Torah’ which contains the “Five Books of Moshe - Moses”, below are the details of these Books:
1. The
Torah:
בְּרֵאשִׁית -
Bereshit - Genesis; שְׁמוֹת - Shemot - Exodus; וַיִּקְרָא -
Vayikra - Leviticus; בְּמִדְבַּר -
Be’midbar - Numbers; and דְּבָרִים - Devarim
- Deuteronomy.
2. The
Tanakh:
This work is located directly after ‘the Torah, however, ‘Tanakh’ is the name of the entire Hebrew Scriptural writings’, there no other work that is from אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God). It is made up as follows:
Torah =
History & Law, Nevi’im = The
Prophets. *Ketuvim = all
other Writings.
*The Ketuvim - Includes, Poetical books - Psalms, Proverbs, Job, the Megillot, or Scrolls - Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations of Jeremiah, Ecclesiastes, Esther, prophecy of Daniel, and history of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Chronicles I & II, etc.

Hebraic
History:
As there are also non Hebrew’s reading this site, I had been asked various questions re our faith, thus this page being online, describing our history.
Jewish history spans nearly 6,000 years, beginning with the Creation etc. However, it came more to the forefront at the time of our patriarch Avraham, who is considered to be the second to embrace the idea of a single, all-powerful אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God). The first was Adam, later his Noach who had taught the young Avram whist visiting him.
Hebrew historians generally place Avraham - Abraham’s life somewhere between 2000 and 1800 BCE. The narrative continues with his descendants, especially his grandson Ya’aqov - Jacob, who later became known as Yisrael - Israel. The Israelites, being Jacob’s descendants were also called Hebrews, who eventually ended up in Egypt, where they in due course were enslaved, and around 400 years later the Hebrews were liberated by Moshe - Moses by the command of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, the pivotal figure in Hebraic history is Moshe - Moses. He is traditionally credited with leading the Israelites out of Egypt (the Exodus) and receiving the Torah on Mount Horeb. These events are traditionally dated to around 1300 BCE.
As a formal religion, the “Israelites” began to take recognizable shape during the time in the Sinai dessert, with the establishment of the אֱלֹהִים - Elohim given religious laws, rituals, giving the Israelites a communal identity. Whilst in the wilderness, the Tabernacle was erected and used during the 40 year journey. In due course it was not King Dovid - David, but his son King Solomon who constructed the ‘First Temple’ (Mishkan) in Jerusalem around 950 BCE which marked the beginning of a centralized place of worship for the Hebraic people.
The above contains a shortened version of how the Hebrew faith began, although there is far more to be told, for this, the internet has so much more!
