 “The Mincha - מנחה

The Afternoon Jewish Prayer..

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Just before the study, I would like to commence with one more important quote from the book of Yahoshua - Joshua Ch 1:7-8. (JPS-1917).

Be strong and courageous. Be careful to obey the entire Torah My servant Moshe has given you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Torah depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

Introduction:

1. theModeh Ani” being of course the early morning prayer, is located on another page, there is a link to it after the completion of this study re our other daily prayers.

The “Mincha” prayer is the second prayer of the day, and its time begins half an hour after midday and lasts until the evening. While the Shacharit (morning) and Maariv (evening) prayers occur during the transitions from night to day at sunrise and from day to night at sunset, the Mincha prayer is recited during the routine time of the day when we are busy and occupied with daily activities. This prayer is short in its basic structure and does not include the “Shema” recitation as per the other two prayers. At its centre stands the “Amidah” prayer!

Over centuries, “Mincha” became a fixed part of the daily prayer routine in Our Faith. Its name, “Mincha”, literally means “gift” or “offering,” reflecting its historical connection to the afternoon sacrifices in the Holy Temple.

Meaning and Significance:

As the day transitions from morning to evening, Mincha represents a moment of introspection and gratitude. It serves as a reminder to pause and acknowledge God’s presence in our daily lives. This prayer stands as a testament to the discipline and dedication required to maintain a regular prayer practice, even in the midst of a busy day.

Structure of the Mincha Prayer:

Mincha” is concise yet profound, consisting of several key components:

1. Ashrei (Tehillim - Psalm 145):

This Tehillim - Psalm of praise opens the Mincha service, setting a tone of gratitude and reverence.

2. Amidah (The Standing Prayer):

The centrepiece of Mincha, the Amidah, consists of 19 blessings, including requests for wisdom, forgiveness, and peace.

3. Tachanun (Supplications):

On weekdays, the Amidah is followed by Tachanun, a series of supplications seeking אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim (God’s), blessed be His Sanctified Name, mercy and forgiveness.

4. Aleinu (Concluding Prayer):

The service concludes with Aleinu, a prayer acknowledging God’s sovereignty and expressing hope for universal recognition of His kingship.
