Remember the following three truth’s from our beloved Scriptures!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, neither shall ye diminish from it, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם (the LORD your Eloleichem) which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

This is My Name FOREVER, and this is My Memorial to ALL Generations”. Shemot - Exodus 3:15. (JPS).

I am יְהוָה, that is My Name; and My glory will I not give to another”. Yeshayahu - Isaiah 42:8. (JPS).

Rosh Hashanah” & “Yom Kippur

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Just before the study, I would like to commence with one more important quote from the book of Yahoshua - Joshua Ch 1:7-8. (JPS-1917).

Be strong and courageous. Be careful to obey the entire Torah My servant Moshe has given you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Torah depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

Introduction:

The High Holy Days centre’s very much on “Rosh Hashanah” and “Yom Kippur”, the bookends of the “Ten Days of Awe”. Together we invite ethical reflection, communal prayer, and personal repair of relationships with other people and of course with אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God). This study session presents the history and meaning of each day, and its core rituals (including the blowing of the Shofar and fasting), and offers guided exercises to help participants to fully understanding the practice of this special day!

Rosh Hashana:

Ten days after “Rosh Hashanah” (the Hebrew New Year) it marks the end of the High Holy Days, or the 10 days of Awe, a time when Hebrews reflect on the year that has past.

Yom Kippur:

Yom Kippur means the “Day of Atonement”, we as Hebrews consider it the “Most Sacred Day” in our calendar. It is a day of prayer, fasting, and attend the Synagogue.

Details about Yom Kippur:

However, it is a day to bring about reconciliation and forgiveness between people and between individuals and with אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim (God), blessed be His Sanctified Name. Hebrews observing Yom Kippur will abstain completely from food and drink for 25 hours.

On Yom Kippur is the day that אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, blessed be He, decides each person’s fate, for the coming year. At the end of the service  the Shofar, being a Ram’s Horn is blown for the final time marking the end of the Holy day, It is said that this is when אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s judgement is believed to be made, and the book of life is finally sealed for another year!

Further understanding:

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year, biblically associated with “Yom Teruah” and marked by proclamation of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s Kingship, Shofarot (blasts), and symbolic foods; its tone combines solemnity and hopeful affirmation.

The “Ten Days of Awe” – “Aseret Yemei Teshuvah” runs from “Rosh Hashanah” through “Yom Kippur” and are a concentrated period of repentance and moral accounting.

Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement, being the most sacred day on the calendar, and it is focused on prayer, fasting for roughly 25 hours, and seeking reconciliation with others and with אֱלֹהִים.

Practices and Symbols

The Shofar:

We will remember and understand the Ram’s horn blasts that punctuate “Rosh Hashanah” services and evokes a call to repentance and coronation imagery.

Fasting:

There is an abstention from food and drink for approximately 25 hours on “Yom Kippur” as a spiritual discipline aimed at humility and it focuses on much prayer.

Teshuvah practices:

The word וִדּוּי Vidui’ means confession, charitable giving, asking forgiveness directly from those that may have been harmed, and making a recommitment to ethical change, unto יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ - the LORD our Elo’Hey’nu, blessed be His Sanctified Name!

I pray that this short study will have inspired you and the next time these feast’s come along, become fully involved in every facet of these blessed feasts, for your life will be so much the better!
