With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens,
PhD.
“Be strong and courageous. Be careful to obey the entire Torah My servant Moshe has given you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Torah depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

The Hebraic scriptures have many Holy texts, but these scriptures are called “Tanakh”, which is an acronym for “Torah”, “Nevi’im”, and “Ketuvim”. These three sections comprise the whole of the “Hebraic Scriptures!”
The first, in both order and priority, is the blessed “Torah”, which is the teaching of the first five books of the Tanakh, it is also known as the “Pentateuch”, with “Genesis”, “Exodus”, “Leviticus”, “Numbers”, and “Deuteronomy”. In these books, אֱלֹהִים (God’s) people hear the story of creation and the beginnings of their history under the patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. They learn of their early history as slaves in Egypt and their miraculous rescue by אֱלֹהִים. They received the תּוֹרָה - Torah (law) from אֱלֹהִים, given to Moses on Mt. Sinai, and they come to the land promised to them by אֱלֹהִים. The Torah is the most sacred literature of the Jews and is treated with the highest respect. A Sefer Torah is a Torah copied by hand written on parchment scroll’s and kept in the Synagogue’s Ark. It is read from during Sabbath services and other Jewish festivals.
The second section of the Tanakh is Nevi’im, which means Prophets, and includes historical and prophetic words to אֱלֹהִים (God’s) people from the entry into the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership, through the early judges, and then from the triumphant kingdom of Dovid - David to the decaying kingdoms of Israel and Judah, and to the last words of the prophets. It is comprised of 21 books: Joshua, Judges, 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi.
The third section is Ketuvim, which means writings, and these 13 books—Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, Esther, Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah, 1 and 2 Chronicles—contain the riches of Jewish poetry, wisdom literature, philosophy, history, and prophecy. With the sole exception of Daniel, many Jews consider these books of lesser inspiration than the first two sections.
These three sections together contain all the books that Protestant Christians call the Old Testament. (Catholics include seven other Jewish books, not in the Tanakh.) However, the order of the books differs from that of the Christian canon. The Christian canon closes with Malachi, the last of the prophets, while the Jewish canon ends with 1 and 2 Chronicles and the return of the Jews from Babylonian Exile.
What about the manmade (rabbinic) writings?
Apart from the actual Scriptural Tanakh, tragically ‘Jews’ also tend to recognize works which are not in any way scriptural, but were wholly created by men, or rather rabbis! Thus there is the ‘Mishnah’, a collection of commentaries on the law and rabbinic teachings assembled around A.D. 200. In the two or three centuries that followed, rabbis pored over this collection and compiled a huge body of further commentary, including the “Zohar” and the ‘Gemara’. Together, the Zohar, Mishnah and the Gemara to make up the Talmud, and these texts also shamefully regarded as holy scriptures. The truth is: the ONLY HOLY Scriptures is the Tanakh! The Talmud and the myriad midrashim (interpretations and commentary on various scriptures), and sadly the mystical and occultist “Kabbalah” have been poor sources of spiritual insight. Yet, so many who are not knowledgeable, exccept these man made works, and they have been responsible to create rabbinic Judaism!
Tehillim – Psalm 119: 1-2 & 18-19. (JPG-1917):
“Happy are they that are upright in the way, who walk in the law of יְהוָה - the LORD. Happy are they that keep His testimonies, that seek Him with the whole heart” ... “Open Thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of Thy law. I am a sojourner in the earth; hide not Thy commandments from me”.
Finally, we need to ask the following question, “Why are we called Jews?” The truth is that we were only ever known in the Tanakh as “Hebrews” or “Israelites”, however, tragically after the destruction of בֵּית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ הַשֵּׁנִי - the Second Temple, due to an error our name was changed to Judaism or just Jews and our faith in these days is really based on ‘rabbinic Judaism’. As we all should know that name is purely associated with the Tribe of Judah, which is just a single tribe, although Benjamin also lived in Judah in the end. However, to this very day all 12 tribes of us the Hebrews are still part of the Hebrew faith in Israel. The reason I know this, for the Tanakh tells us so!
But the full truth is that so many of the Ten Tribes also lived in Judah as well, and the Tanakh shows this to this very day; thus all 12 tribes lived there as well. The reason I know this, is that the Tanakh tells us so!
Other verses regarding the Law:
“Moses commanded us a Law”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 33:4”.
“Mine ordinances shall ye do, and My statutes shall ye keep, to walk therein: אֲנִי, יְהוָה (I am the LORD)”. Vayikra - Leviticus 18:5. (JPS-1917).
“And I gave them My
statutes, and taught them Mine ordinances, which if a man do, he shall live by
them”. Yechezkel - Ezekiel 20:11. (JPS-1917).
In the Torah we were given 613 Mitzvoth, with 248 Positive
Commandments (do’s) and 365 Negative Commandments (do not’s). Although, sadly much later rabbis, added thousands
more, but manmade laws, and pretend it is from the so called ‘Oral law’!
However, try and find a single mention of this so-called wholly manmade ‘oral
law?
