“Tehillim - Psalm 33”

Tehillim - Psalm 33 1-21 (JPS-1917) is a majestic hymn that pairs exuberant praise for אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s (God’s) creative word with a sober reminder that Israel’s hope rests in אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim, בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם קָדוֹשׁוֹ - ‘Baruch Shem Kadosho’ - ‘ Blessed be His Holy Name’, who has a sovereign purpose, rather than human power.

Let us first read the Tehillim - Psalm 33:

1. Rejoice in יְהוָה - the LORD, O ye righteous, praise is comely for the upright.

2. Give thanks unto יְהוָה with harp, sing praises unto Him with the psaltery of ten strings.

3. Sing unto Him a new song; play skilfully amid shouts of joy.

4. For the word of יְהוָה is upright; and all His work is done in faithfulness.

5. He loveth righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the loving-kindness of יְהוָה - the LORD.

6. By the word of יְהוָה were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.

7. He gathereth the waters of the sea together as a heap; He layeth up the deeps in storehouses.

8. Let all the earth fear יְהוָה; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.

9. For He spoke, and it was; He commanded, and it stood.

10. יְהוָה bringeth the counsel of the nations to nought; He maketh the thoughts of the peoples to be of no effect.

11. The counsel of יְהוָה standeth for ever, the thoughts of His heart to all generations.

12. Happy is the nation whose אֱלֹהִים - Elohim is יְהוָה - the LORD; the people whom He hath chosen for His own inheritance.

13. יְהוָה looketh from heaven; He beholdeth all the sons of men;

14. From the place of His habitation He looketh intently upon all the inhabitants of the earth;

15. He that fashioneth the hearts of them all, that considereth all their doings.

16. A king is not saved by the multitude of a host; a mighty man is not delivered by great strength.

17. A horse is a vain thing for safety; neither doth it afford escape by its great strength.

18. Behold, the eye of יְהוָה is toward them that fear Him, toward them that wait for His mercy;

19. To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.

20. Our soul hath waited for יְהוָה; He is our help and our shield.

21. For in Him doth our heart rejoice, because we have trusted in His Holy Name.

22. Let Thy mercy, O יְהוָה - LORD, be upon us, according as we have waited for Thee.

Introduction:

Tehillim - Psalm 33 opens with a call to new, ‘skillful’, and ‘communal praise’ and quickly it unfolds into a theological meditation: אֱלֹהִים - Elohim creates by word, governs the nations, and watches over those who fear Him.

The JPS-1917 wording really emphasizes both liturgical ‘joy’ (song, harp, timbrel) and sovereignty (creation by the breath of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s mouth), so the Psalm moves naturally from ‘worship’ to ‘trust’ in divine providence

Let us now look at the verse by verse commentary.

Verses 1-3. Call to praise:

The psalm begins with imperatives: rejoice, give thanks, sing a new song, play skilfully amid shouts of joy. Worship is both artful and communal; praise is the appropriate response of the righteous. The “new song” motif invites fresh recognition of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s acts and presence.

Verses 4-5. אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s character, upright word and loving-kindness:

The Psalmist asserts that “the word of יְהוָה - the LORD is upright” and that אֱלֹהִים - Elohim loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of His lovingkindness. This links אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s moral character to the created order: worship arises from אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s faithful governance and ethical love.

Verses 6-9. Creation and Divine command.

Here the Psalm gives a compact creation theology: by the word of אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim were the heavens made; by the breath of His mouth all their host. The repeated formula (“He spoke, and it was”) stresses אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s sovereign, effective speech, creation answers to divine command, not human design.

Verses 10-12. Sovereignty over nations and the blessed remnant.

יְהוָה - the LORD frustrates the counsel of nations and favors those who fear Him; the true security of a people rests in אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s purpose, not in military or political schemes. The “blessed nation” motif affirms covenantal hope for those who trust יְהוָה - the LORD.

Verses 13-22. אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s watchful providence and human hope.

The closing section portrays אֱלֹהִים as watching from heaven, testing hearts, and saving those who hope in Him. The psalm balances divine transcendence with intimate care: אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s gaze is cosmic yet personally attentive, and human confidence is placed in His steadfast love rather than in mortal strength.

Concluding reflection:

Tehillim - Psalm 33 in the JPS-1917 version invites worship that is both joyful and theologically grounded: Praise arises from seeing אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim as our ‘Creator’, ‘Judge’, and ‘Protector’. For teaching, emphasize how liturgy (song and instrument) and doctrine (creation and providence) belong together, and Praise forms trust, and trust shapes communal life!
