The Nahum Study.

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Just before the study, I would like to commence with one more important quote from the book of Yahushua - Joshua Ch 1:7-8. (JPS-1917).

Be strong and courageous. Be careful to obey the entire Torah My servant Moshe has given you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Torah depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

Introduction:

Nahum’s name means “comfort” or “consolation”, and he brings a message that is anything but comforting to the Assyrian city of Nineveh. Nahum’s book is filled with vivid imagery and poetic language, announces אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s judgment on Nineveh for its cruelty, arrogance, and idolatry.

Chapter 1: Reveals the Wrath and Majesty of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, blessed be He.

This chapter will introduce us to Nahum’s central theme, which is “the wrath of אֱלֹהִים against Nineveh”. It opens with a depiction of אֱלֹהִים as jealous and avenging, whose wrath is fierce but who is also a refuge to those who trust in Him.

Nahum pronounces woe upon Nineveh, stating that אֱלֹהִים will not leave the guilty unpunished. He then contrasts this with the assurance that אֱלֹהִים will bring deliverance and restoration to Judah.

Chapter 2: The Fall of Nineveh.

This chapter reveals a dramatic portrayal of the siege and fall of Nineveh. However, Nahum uses dramatic imagery to describe the attacking army, as well as the chariots, and the defence of the city, and ultimately its plunder and total collapse.

This chapter also characterizes Nineveh as a den of lions, who fed on the blood of the nations, but now, their voices are silenced, and their power is broken.

Chapter 3: The Total Ruin of Nineveh.

In this chapter, Nahum calculates the reasons for Nineveh’s downfall. He speaks clearly of the city’s bloodshed, lies, and their relentless cruelty.

Nahum declares that all who hear of Nineveh’s fall will clap their hands in great joy due to the horrendous terror it had spread. This chapter and the book concludes with a stern declaration that Nineveh’s destruction is final and that there is no healing for its wounds!

Let us now summarize the Book of Nahum:

It speaks about a city that existed many ages ago, and of course it was Nineveh. Just think of it, for it was a city where there was great evil and bullies roamed the streets, stealing whatever they could from its inhabitants. They were wild and acting like they owned everything. Sadly, that was, how Nineveh was.

They were completely evil, as they continued to hurt so many people and they thought that they were the toughest and the best in town.

But of course, there was a man named Nahum. And Nahum was very much like a messenger who received important messages from אֱלֹהִים. Then on a certain day, יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים - the LORD Elohim, blessed be His Holy Name, told Nahum to tell everyone that אֱלֹהִים was extremely mad at Nineveh. For אֱלֹהִים had been more like a Father who had absolutely enough of his children’s evil behaviour. Nahum told everyone that אֱלֹהִים was going to punish Nineveh because their disgraceful behaviour.

Nahum told them, that אֱלֹהִים is normally extremely nice and protects those who are good. However, if they are bad and evil, such it was in Nineveh, then expect what you deserve! Nahum told everyone that אֱלֹהִים was going to send an army to punish Nineveh.

And it happened very soon as an army came with many soldiers, and there was a huge ruckus with chariots and horses. And certainly Nineveh’s massively strong walls was unable to save them, and they very soon had lost all their stolen treasures.

Nahum stated that many of the residents of Nineveh were like an evil horde, yet they were greatly defeated, and now the faithful residents no longer needed to be scared anymore. Everyone was delighted that the evil rebel’s received what they deserved, and the locals would not have to worry about Nineveh bothering them again. Nahum’s story shows that when people act like bullies and are mean to others, there’s always a day when they have to face punishment. And, it also tells us that יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים - the LORD Elohim, blessed be His Holy Name, who was kind and caring to all those who were faithful!

The Conclusion:

The Book of Nahum should be known, as a thunderous testament to the justice of אֱלֹהִים, blessed be He. Through hectic imagery and fervent declarations, Nahum portrayed the downfall of Nineveh as a direct consequence of its wickedness and great brutality.

Although the book focuses heavily on judgment, however it also reminds us of אֱלֹהִים - God’s refuge and protection for all those who trust in Him. There is no doubt that Nahum’s voice reverberates throughout time, reminding us that אֱלֹהֵיכֶם- יְהוָה- the LORD thy Elo’hei’chem, blessed be His Holy Name, is the sovereign and that His justice is always certain!
