“Keep the Sabbaath”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Just before the study, I would like to commence with one more important quote from the book of Yahoshua - Joshua Ch 1:7-8. (JPS-1917).

Be strong and courageous. Be careful to obey the entire Torah My servant Moshe has given you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Torah depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

Introduction:

The blessed Shabbas rest was given to us by אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God) not only as a commandment, but also as a blessed GIFT. When was the last time you thought, “I just need a day off.” Or “I constantly feel exhausted.” Or “I’ll never catch up with my to-dos!” I am sure that you can see where this is study is going.

The truth is that we were not made to continuously run at full speed all the time. אֱלֹהִים, blessed be He, even demonstrated this when He created the world, for on the Seventh day, He rested from His work!

Now, I am going to commence this study with a question. When was the last time you kept a true Sabbath rest? When was the last time you embraced this day in all its fullness and beauty? However, I pray by the end of this study on the Sabbath you will understand why the Sabbath is so very important in our lives, for there is far more to it, for our obedience can not only just bless us, but also our mishpachah (families), and specifically how to incorporate Shabbas into our lives on a weekly basis.

The Sabbath was given for us Hebrews. Thus how did it come about? The simple truth it was found at the very beginning of creation, and it is one of the 10 commandments which means it’s for everyone for all time. Also, Shemot - Exodus tells us as much. In verses 31:16 it says, “The people of Israel are to keep the Sabbath, to observe it throughout all their generations, as a perpetual covenant.”

Not only that but we seems that we may even need it so much MORE these days. The pace of life was slower, just a few decades ago, let alone thousands of years ago.

Today, everything is instant. Thus, that often meant that our brains are rushing to the next thing without appreciating the NOW. We also do not have time to THINK at times when we have been bombarded by ‘social media’, ‘advertisements’, ‘music’, and ‘instant gratification’. But our ‘beings’, ‘minds’, and ‘bodies’ are literally crying out for some ‘peace’,’ quiet’, as well as some ‘rest’.

Therefore, we need to shut off the world around us, in order that we can ... 1. Have true rest,, and 2. Have it quiet enough to be able to hear from our beloved אֱלֹהִים - Elohim.

And yet our brains still do not accept it. Why? Because our to-do list is usually a mile long and we think if we take a day off the world will spin out of control. Believe me, it certainly will not!

Taking a weekly Sabbath rest is also an act of trust. It is telling אֱלֹהִים, “I can not do this on my own. I know because I’ve tried. So I’m going to cease from working and cease from striving to prove that my strength and success comes from YOU יְהוָה - the LORD.”

We should trust אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה. We should certainly feel like we need a day to catch up. And He is giving us an opportunity to trust Him by not doing anything, but going to the Synagogue on the Sabbath! Trusting that אֱלֹהִים, blessed be He, will provide even as we stop striving. It is a time to remember that יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ - the LORD our Eloheinu, and He is our provider!

Remember from Friday evening just before the dark, the Sabbath commences and two Sabbath candles are lit wit a brachia - blessing, etc, and the meal prepared before the Sabbath, will be served, it is a day of rest and prayer until One hour after the commencement of the Sabbath! Other details are available if you email us, and I will gladly forward full details and complete with all blessings, and so much more to make your Sabbath within the wonderful requirements according to the Torah!

Please Note: My email is located towards the end of this page.

May אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim, bless and keep you in the Palm of His ever loving Hands, Amen.

In Conclusion, a Question to Deepen the Conversation:

Which part of the Tanakh study, or possibly a particular line or statement within it has touched you the most? And how do you feel about spending more time studying our beloved Tanakh? I pray that you are doing well as a faithful Hebrew, and אֱלֹהִים - Elohim willing you are upholding as many of our blessed Mitzvoth’s?

Dear reader, please remember this, pray for peace and solitude in your life, and then work on keeping as calm as possible and learn to improve your life, for אֱלֹהִים -  בָּרוּךְ אֱלֹהִים - Bless Elohim, He is always there and ready to help and guide you!
