Four special verses

Tanakh versions:

Throughout this site I will use any of the following three versions of the TaNaKh: 1. “Jewish Publication Society” (JPS-1917), 2. “Sefaria.org” (SEF), and 3. “Mechon-Mamre.org” (MEC).

Colour coded details of the - TaNaKh:

1. Torah = History & Law, 2. Nevi’im = The Prophets. 3. *Ketuvim = all other Writings.

*The Ketuvim - Includes, Poetical books - Psalms, Proverbs, Job, the Megillot, or Scrolls - Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations of Jeremiah, Ecclesiastes, and Esther, prophecy of Daniel, and history of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Chronicles I & II.

Please Note: Some alterations have been made relating to ‘Names’ and ‘Attributes’ having been corrected as it once was - pre the “Masoretic Text”.

Remember the following three truth’s from our beloved Scriptures!

“Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, neither shall ye diminish from it, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם (the LORD your Elo’lei’chem) which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

“This is My Name FOREVER, and this is My Memorial to ALL Generations”. Shemot - Exodus 3:15. (JPS).

“I am יְהוָה, that is My Name; and My glory will I not give to another”. Yeshayahu - Isaiah 42:8. (JPS).

“אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s Word is Forever.”

Just before the study, I would like to commence with one more important quote from the book of Yahushua - Joshua Ch 1:7-8. (JPS-1917).

“Be strong and courageous. Be careful to obey the entire Torah My servant Moshe has given you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Torah depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

Four special verses:

In his study we will cover a beautiful selection of four verses from our beloved Tanakh! These four verses form a compact theology of permanence, “Sabbath”, “Covenant”, “Torah”, “prophet with the divine Word”. This truths all points to continuity across generations.

Below, are some four points related to Elohim’s Word which was always meant to be Forever! The question is however, are we as observant, as we should be, I pray we are.

We will first look at the introduction of the relevant four verses:

1. Sabbath = Forever: Vayikra - Leviticus 16:31.

“It is a Sabbath of solemn rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls; it is a statute Forever”.

2. Covenant = What we must do: Divrei HaYamim 1 - 1 Chronicles 16:15.

“Remember His Covenant forever, the Word which He commanded to a thousand generations”.

3. Torah = covers so much, teaching us to be obedient: Tehillim - Psalm 119:160.

“The beginning of Thy Word is truth; and all Thy righteous ordinance endures Forever”.

4. Elohim’s Word = our Torah is Forever: Yeshayahu - Isaiah 40:8.

“The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; but the word of our Elohim shall stand Forever”.

Next we will head to our Tanakh and see how these four wonderful scriptures were written:

We will first read verses in Ivrit - Hebrew, followed by a transliteration, then a plain-English paraphrase translation.

1. Sabbath statute forever: וַיִּקְרָא - Vayikra - Leviticus 23:31. (JPS-1917).

Hebrew:

שַׁבָּת שַׁבָּתוֹן הִוא לָכֶם; וְעִנִּיתֶם אֶת־נַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶם; חֹק תָּמִים הִיא לָכֶם.

Transliteration:

“Shabbat shabbaton hi lachem; v’innitem et’nafshotechem chok tamim hi lakhem”.

Plain-English paraphrase:

“The Sabbath is an everlasting day of solemn rest for you; you shall humble your souls; it is a perpetual statute for your community”.

2. Remember His covenant forever: דִּבְרֵי הַיָּמִים א - Divrei HaYamim 1 - 1 Chronicles 16:15.

Hebrew:

זִכְרוּ בְּרִיתוֹ לְעוֹלָם, דְּבָרוֹ בְּדֹר דֹּר לְדוֹרוֹת.

Transliteration:

“Zikru brito l’olam; dvaro b’dor dor l’dorot”.

Plain-English paraphrase:

“Keep in memory His covenant forever; the word He commanded endures through a thousand generations”.

3. Torah endures forever: תְּהִלִּים- Tehillim - Psalm 119:160.

Hebrew:

רֵאשִׁית דְּבָרֶךָ אֱמֶת; וּמִשְׁפְּטֶיךָ לְעוֹלָם.

Transliteration:

“Reshit d’varkha emet; u-mishp’taykha l’olam”.

Plain-English paraphrase:

“The first thing in Your teaching is truth; all Your righteous rules continue forever.

4. The word of Elohim stands forever: יְשַׁעְיָהוּ - Yeshayahu - Isaiah 40:8.

Hebrew:

יַבֵּשׁ הָעָשָׂב, יֶחֱלַשׁ הַפֶּרַח; וּדְבַר-אֱלֹהֵינוּ יָקוּם לְעוֹלָם.

Transliteration:

“Yabesh ha’asab, yechelash ha’perach; u’dvar Eloheinu yakum l’olam”.

Plain-English paraphrase:

“The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God) continues and stands forever”.

These verses above, reminds us that the ‘Sabbath’, the ‘Covenant’, ‘Torah’, and the ‘Divine Word’ form a living legacy that shapes ‘time’, with our ‘memories’, and ‘hope across the generations’.

There is continuity across genres: Law (Leviticus), historiography (Chronicles), (Poetry - Psalm), and prophecy (Yeshayahu - Isaiah) collectively testify to different facets of divine permanence!

Temporal rhythm and memory:

1. Sabbath structures time;

2. Covenant mandates collective memory;

3. Torah supplies moral and legal continuity;

4. Prophetic proclamation reorients hope beyond mortality.

Past, present, future loop:

Each verse offers a posture of ‘observe’, ‘remember’, ‘study’, ‘trust’, that together form a pedagogy (teaching) for transmitting our beloved faith and uphold our blessed Mitzvoth!

There is continuity across genres: Law (Leviticus), historiography (Chronicles), (Poetry - Psalm), and prophecy (Yeshayahu - Isaiah) collectively testify to different facets of divine permanence!

Temporal rhythm and memory:

1. Sabbath structures time;

2. Covenant mandates collective memory;

3. Torah supplies moral and legal continuity;

4. Prophetic proclamation reorients hope beyond mortality.

Past, present, future loop:

Each verse offers a posture of observance, remember, study, trust, that together form a pedagogy (teaching) for transmitting our beloved faith and uphold our blessed Mitzvoth!

Now we will look a brief commentary on each verse:

1. Vayikra - Leviticus 23:31. Sabbath statute is forever, highlights ritual rhythm and communal pause as an enduring covenantal sign that shapes time and ethical formation.

2. Divrei HaYamim 1 - 1 Chronicles 16:15. Covenant remembered forever, and it frames Israel’s history as transmission: law and promise preserved for “a thousand generations,” a pledge to continuity and responsibility.

3. Tehellim - Psalm 119:160. Torah endures forever and it asserts textual reliability and moral flourishing: the “beginning” of the word is truth, and its ordinances sustain life.

4. Yeshayahu - Isaiah 40:8. The Word of Elohim stands forever, as it contrasts human transience with Divine permanence; the prophetic voice grounds hope beyond ephemeral life!

What all the above is about, asking ourselves are we really upholding Elohim’s loving requirements, or have we let some simply go? Elohim did say in our Tanakh the following, through a number of His chosen prophets.

“Return unto Me, and I will return unto you, saith צְבָאוֹת- יְהוָה- the LORD of hosts”. Mal’a’chi - Malachi 3:7. MEC).

יְהוָה בָּרוּךְ - bless the LORD, may we have learned to Return unto Him, keeping His blessed Comandments!

For our Elohim is the One who gave us ... our Life!

May the שָׁלוֹם - Shalom = Peace of צְבָאוֹת- יְהוָה= the LORD of hosts. be with you, and please always uphold our blessed שַׁבָּת - Shabbat, as well as the ‘מוֹעֲדִים - Mo’a’dim - Feasts, and continue saying your daily תְּפִלָּה - Te’fee’lah’s (Prayers) and regular בְּרָכָה - Be’ra’chah’s (blessings) before food and drinks, etc!
