Remember the following three truth’s from our beloved Scriptures!

Ye shall not add to the Word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish from it, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם (the LORD your Eloleichem) which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

This is My Name FOREVER, and this is My Memorial to ALL Generations”. Shemot - Exodus 3:15.

I am יְהוָה, that is My Name; and My glory will I not give to another”. Yeshayahu - Isaiah 42:8.

Are we permitted to change
Elohim’s Word?

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

I am sure you will have noted that very powerful verse seen above, regarding changing Elohim’s blessed WORD!

Ye shall not add to the Word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish from it”.

The question you might ask at this point, is our current Masoretic Text not perfect?

Before we come to that, I would like you to know that I was originally an archaeologist and whilst in Israel I also spent time studying the ‘Dead Sea Scrolls’ And I noted that from the scrolls that a good number of verses had been altered and different to our current Masoretic Texts. In addition many of the scrolls have now been tested at Groningen University in The Netherlands, and what come out of it is simply amazing.

As most of us will know that all of our current texts translation were created by a committee of Jewish scholars who based their work on the Masoretic Hebrew text. Thus we should ask did they stick closely to the original verses and script as used to be, or were there any alterations made?

Sadly, I am able to say that, there were far too many alterations made, and in a way it has sadly changed its actual meaning in a many cases, and it made a huge difference to the facts of His Word. Did these rabbis not know, or understand what Davarim 2:14, clearly told us?

I can almost hear some saying “Well, prove it then. Believe me that is precisely what I intend to do, for certain rabbis have greatly altered His Word, without adequate proof and at times changes were introduced through zoharic and kabbalistic means (which are mystical’ and ‘occult’ work).

What we are now going to look at is notable Hebrew Bible passages where the Masoretic Text which in parts differs greatly from those earlier versions, such as the DSS, being the Dead Sea Scrolls, where I have spent times there at the DSS as an archaeologist.

Below are several key examples of entries that will state the principal variants of our current text’s and those in the DSS parchments, etc.

Davarim - Deuteronomy 32:8, MT version;

“When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when He separated the children of men, He set the borders of the peoples according to the number of the children of Israel!

Let us check the last two words; בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל - which is of course, means the “sons of Israel”. Ask yourself “is that correct?” Well let us look what a ‘Dead Sea Scroll’ had, and see if the last two words (above) were correct?

The next quote comes from an ancient DSS parchment which hails from 3 BCE:

If we look at the very same verse, here we will find that those last two words are clearly different, for this ancient parchment clearly states - בְּנֵי־אֱלֹהִים - “sons of Elohim - (God)”.

As we have already seen that there is a significance alteration, to say the least, as Elohim, blessed be He, meant what he said, that we are His son’s!

However, let us look at another major alteration found in the Book of Tehillim - Psalm:

Is there anything of the rabbis who made changes i our blessed Tanakh that would have really angered our beloved אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, blessed be He.

Well there is a major alteration made from the original DSS ancient copy being the beautiful Tehillim - Psalm 53. Tragically, I will have to say what was done here was a criminal alteration, and against אֱלֹהִים wishes.

This is My Name FOREVER, and this is My Memorial to ALL Generations”. Shemot - Exodus 3:15.

Believe me this alteration was clearly extremely shocking. Sadly they made seven major changes in this Tehillim, and there are also others with alterations!

In this case, I will just show one verse, being number 7, after which I will explain.

“Oh, that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion!
When God turneth the captivity of His people, let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad”. Tehillim - Psalm 53.

You may ask, “Well, what is wrong with this verse?” The truth is the ancient DSS parchments is very different to the one we have just read from what is in our Masoretic Texts, and it greatly differs from the Dead Sea Scroll’s parchment.

What could they have changed in seven of the Tehillim verses.

And then it is what they changed in both the Hebrew, as well as in all translations. But what is it?

Believe it or not, they altered the Sacred Name of Elohim, from יְהוָה - YHVH, blessed be His Sanctified Name”, and replaced it with יְהוָה - YHVH’s attribute, being - אֱלֹהִים - God!

Now what was His commandment, in Davarim 4:2?

Ye shall not add to the Word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish from it, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם (the LORD your Elo’hei’chem) which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2.

We need to remember that there were seven evil alteration made in this Tehillim. I will list each chapter that was changed; Verse 2 has 1; Verse 3 has 2; Verse 5 has 1; Verse 6 has 2; Verse 7 has 1.

Thus there are seven erroneous alterations!

There are also many other changes; and some are found in ... Psalm 22:16, and in 1–2 Samuel and 1–2 Kings, as well as 12 other options, discovered so far!

Thus the truth is that our current Tanakh is far from being perfect as it has men’s hands in having changed what our heavenly Father has originally given it (be it inspirationally).

‘Maimonides’, who was also known as ‘Rambam’:

Maimonides, who is also known as a Sephardic Medieval 12th century Hebrew philosopher and physician, whose life and works are filled with amazing details, which are sadly, often overlooked.

What we should know and understand that there were many rabbis who invented new laws and they tragically made other alterations, but Maimonides disagreed with all those who were creating these new laws! In addition Maimonides aimed to make our Law more accessible and our theology into legal writings. He also rejected some of their poor Talmudic interpretations’! However this is the rabbi who wrote the “Thirteen Principles of Faith!” one of the most highly accepted Hebraic materials. Another work of his was the “Mishnah Torah”. Maimonides aimed to make Hebrew laws more accessible and integrated theology into writings, which led for some debates among certain rabbis. However, he remains, as the most respected of all rabbis of the past!
