Prayer for Repentance
With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.
“Be strong and courageous. Be careful to obey the entire Torah My servant Moshe has given you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Torah depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

Introduction:
There are three essential elements to repenting. But this is true at any time but let us now look further into this subject, as it should help you prepare for “Yom Kippur”.
It is important to know, that at other times of the year, there is a fourth step of repentance, according to the Maimonides - Rambam. Before taking these other steps below, you must recognize what you are doing is a sin, and you must stop it! Since Yom Kippur is covering the last year’s worth of sins, you can presume that the sin is past and completed. But if you have a sin that sadly repeats itself, simply stop it NOW.
What about confession: You need to say your sins out loud, whether that is only to יְהוָה - the LORD’s ears or even to the human ear. Normally, and that can happen during the “Ten Days of Repentance” and Yom Kippur with a fixed text that covers just about everything you could have done. However, you may add to the list whatever you need to.
If your sin was against a person, you must confess your sin to that person and ask for forgiveness. But if you honestly seek forgiveness and offer restitution three times but the other person denies it, then you do not have to ask any more. At that point, the other person bears the sin of holding a grudge.
Regret: You should feel bad about your sin or sins. Do not rationalize it away. Think about how it has damaged you and your relationships with יְהוָה and other people.
Teshuvah: Turn away from the sin by resolving not to do it again in the future. If applicable, create a plan for avoiding that situation in the future or how to better handle it.
As preparation for
Yom Kippur, spend some time thinking about the last year (or years) of your
life. Here is a final thought for you on your “chets.”
Chet means ‘sin’ in Hebrew, but that’s not its literal meaning. It originally
meant to “miss the mark” like for instance in archery. I think this is
important to remember when we try to rationalize that one sin or another wasn’t
really that serious, no one was hurt, and maybe it’s not such a bad thing in
the first place. So maybe you have the same list of sins as last year. Consider
where you’ve moved closer to the mark and maybe where you’ve moved even further
away.
To
repent say the “Avinu Malkeinu”
prayer! Below you will see it in Hebrew as well as a Transliteration, and in English:
1. Ivrit
- Hebrew:
אָבִֽינוּ
מַלְכֵּֽנוּ
חָנֵּֽנוּ
וַעֲנֵֽנוּ
כִּי אֵין
בָּֽנוּ
מַעֲשִׂים
עֲשֵׂה
עִמָּֽנוּ
צְדָקָה
וָחֶֽסֶד
וְהוֹשִׁיעֵֽנוּ
2. Transliteration:
“Avinu malkenu, Avinu malkenu, Avinu malkenu, choneinu va-aneinu, Ki ein banu ma’asim. Asey imanu tzedaka va’chesed, Asey imanu tzedaka va’chesed, Ve’hoshi’enu”.
3. Translation:
“Our Father, our King, be gracious to us and
answer us, though we have no worthy deeds.
Deal with us in righteousness and kindness, and save us”.
A full version of this ‘Avinu Malkenu’ is available online these days.
The question I
have been asked several times is as follows:
“Rabbi, can I repent at other times?” Of course there is nothing to say that you
cannot repent at any time, but to do so, it has to be with a full heart of
genuine meaning, and ensure that you will not repeat the sin (sins) again and
work on being a true faithful Hebrew!
