Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

“Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of אֱלֹהֵיכֶם יְהוָה - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

“Walk with Integrity”

The Pathway of Truth - Light, Life, and Integrity..

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction to a special ‘Four-Verse Study’.

In a world filled with shifting cultural tides, conflicting opinions, and moral ambiguity, the human heart naturally longs for something solid a reliable compass to navigate the complexities of life. Thousands of years ago, the Prophets and psalmists of ancient Israel grappled with these same human challenges. Their conclusion was both ‘profound’ and ‘timeless’: having a ‘true stability’, ‘joy’, and ‘safety’ are found by anchoring oneself to the eternal wisdom of our beloved Creator!

This study explores four powerful, interconnected verses from our Hebrew Scriptures: Proverbs 6:23, Psalm 119:1, Psalm 119:142, and Proverbs 13:14.

Whilst these texts come from different books and genres blending the poetic prayers of the Psalms with the ‘sharp’, ‘practical insights of Proverbs’, they share a profound, ‘unified vocabulary’. Together, they paint a magnificent picture of what happens when a person dedicates their life to the Torah (אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s Divine instruction).

As we examine these passages, we discover that the Word of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim is not a rigid set of rules, but a dynamic ecosystem for the soul. It functions as:

A Bedrock of Truth that never shifts.

A Brilliant Light that dispels the darkness of confusion.

A Pathway meant to be actively walked upon.

A Life-Giving Fountain that refreshes and protects us from hidden dangers.

By looking at these verses together, we do not just learn abstract theology; we discover a ‘practical’, ‘continuous cycle of spiritual growth’. Let us dive into the text to see how eternal truth transforms into daily direction.

1. Proverbs 6:23. (All verses are from the JPS-1917 version of the Tanakh). First In Hebrew, followed by the English translation.

כִּי נֵר מִצְוָה, וְתוֹרָה אוֹר; וְדֶרֶךְ חַיִּים, תּוֹכְחוֹת מוּסָר

“For the commandment is a lamp, and the Torah is light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life”.

2. Psalm 119:1.

אַשְׁרֵי תְמִימֵי-דָרֶךְ הַהֹלְכִים, בְּתוֹרַת יְהוָה

“Happy are they that are upright in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD”.

3. Psalm 119:142.

צִדְקָתְךָ צֶדֶק לְעוֹלָם; וְתוֹרָתְךָ אֱמֶת

“Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Thy law is truth”.

4. Proverbs 13:14.

תּוֹרַת חָכָם, מְקוֹר חַיִּים לָסוּר, מִמֹּקְשֵׁי מָוֶת

“The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death”.

As we look at these four passages as seen above, we will note that a ‘most striking’, ‘interconnected theme’ emerges: The nature of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s Word, which is full of ‘Truth’ as a source of ‘light’, ‘life’, and ‘enduring direction’. They fit together like pieces of a wonderful spiritual puzzle, describing both what the truth is, and how it transforms the person who walks in it!

Below is my breakdown of each verse, along with how they connect to one another.

YYYYYYY

1. Proverbs 6:23.

“For the commandment is a lamp, and the teaching (Torah) is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life”.

My Explanation: This verse uses a beautiful poetic parallelism common in Hebrew literature. A lamp (ner) provides targeted, immediate light for your next step so you don’t trip in the dark. Teaching/Torah (or) is like the sun, a broad, sweeping light that illuminates the entire landscape, giving you context and vision. The verse concludes that “reproofs” (gentle corrections or discipline) are not meant to punish us, but to act as a guardrail keeping us on the “way of life”.

The Practical Takeaway: אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s instructions give us both immediate guidance for daily decisions (the lamp) and a grand worldview to understand our place in the universe (the light).

2. Psalm 119:1.

“Ashrei (Happy/Blessed) are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the Torah of יְהוָה - the LORD”.

My Explanation: The word ‘Ashrei’ is often translated as “blessed”, but in Hebrew, it carries the deep sense of finding ‘true alignment’, ‘joy’, and ‘spiritual forward movement’. To be “blameless” (temimei darech) does not mean being ‘flawless’ or ‘perfect’; it means walking with ‘integrity’, ‘wholeness’, and a ‘sincere heart’. The verse equates this beautiful state of living with actively walking in the Torah.

The Practical Takeaway: True happiness is not a ‘destination’ or a ‘feeling’; it is found in the journey (the walk) of aligning our daily steps with אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s path.

3. Psalm 119:142.

“Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Your Torah is truth (Emet)”.

My Explanation: In a world where cultural standards change constantly, this verse certainly anchors us. It highlights two unchanging realities: אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s standard of what is right (‘Tzedakah’) lasts forever, and His instruction (‘Torah’) is absolute truth (‘Emet’). In Hebrew thought, Emet is not just abstract, intellectual accuracy; it implies ‘reliability’, ‘stability’, and ‘trustworthiness’.

The Practical Takeaway: Because the Torah is rooted in eternal truth, it is a rock-solid foundation. You can build a life on it without fearing that the ground will shift beneath you.

4. Proverbs 13:14.

“The teaching (Torah) of the wise is a ‘fountain of life’, to turn one away from the snares of death”.

My Explanation: Here, the Torah is compared to a fountain of life—a flowing spring of fresh, living water (ma'yan chayim). In the arid climate of the ancient Near East, a fresh spring was the difference between life and death. The verse points out a vital protective function of wisdom: it gives you the discernment to see the hidden traps ("snares of death") that choices of foolishness or compromise set for us.

The Practical Takeaway: Imbibing Divine wisdom doesn't just refresh our souls; it actively protects our futures by showing us where the hidden dangers lie before we step into them.

Here is the Golden Thread: Connecting the Verses.

When we look at your selection as a whole, a powerful spiritual progression seems to unfold.

It starts with our walk: Psalm 119:1, as it invites us into a life of ‘integrity’ by walking with the Torah fully in our minds.

We need vision to walk: Proverbs 6:23, explains how we walk without tripping, the Torah provides the immediate lamp for our feet and the overarching light for our path.

The light is dependable: Psalm 119:142, guarantees why this light never fails, because it is rooted in “everlasting righteousness” and “absolute truth”.

The result is life and safety: Proverbs 13:14, shows the ultimate outcome walking by this dependable light that preserves us, becoming a ‘fountain of life’ that keeps us safe from the traps of the dark.

The breakdown of how these four concepts seamlessly connect to form a complete, ongoing cycle of ‘spiritual vitality’.

Psalm 119:142 - The Foundation: Being in Truth! (‘Eternal’, ‘stable’, ‘bedrock’).

Proverbs 6:23 - The Guide: Reveals the Light & Lamp (It illuminates the next step).

Psalm 119:1 - The Action: The Walk (Living with daily integrity).

Proverbs 13:14 - The Outcome: ‘Life’ & ‘Safety’ (Refreshing water & protection).
