Please do NOT visit this site on שַׁבָּת - Shabbat or on the מוֹעֲדִים - Mo’a’dim - Feasts!

Re Tanakh versions:

Throughout this site I may use any of three versions of the Tanakh: 1. “Jewish Publication Society” (JPS-1917), 2. “Mechon-Mamre.org” (MEC), and 3. “Sefaria.org” (SEF), three brilliant versions, However, the JPS-1917 is my preferred version!

Colour coded details of our beloved TaNaKh:

1. Torah = History & Law, 2. Nevi’im = The Prophets. 3. *Ketuvim = all other Writings.

*The Ketuvim - Includes, Poetical books - Psalms, Proverbs, Job, the Megillot, or Scrolls - Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations of Jeremiah, Ecclesiastes, and Esther, prophecy of Daniel, and history of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Chronicles I & II.

Please Note: Some alterations or (additions) have been made relating to ‘Names’ and ‘Attributes’ of אֱלֹהִים – Elohim (God), having been corrected like it once was pre the “Masoretic Text”.

Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

“Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of אֱלֹהֵיכֶם יְהוָה - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

מָגֵן.

“The word Magen”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

This is quite an interesting study yet we will be covering a single, but an important word! “Magen” - מָגֵן means “shield” or “protector” and other similar words.

Its literal meaning: A physical defensive of a “shield” or “buckler” was used in ancient warfare to block blows and arrows.

Metaphorical meaning: Used frequently in the Tanakh as a symbol of “Divine protection”, “defence”, even as a “guardian”, as אֱלֹהִים - Elohim was a “shield” for His people!

Cultural usage: It is also found in phrases like “Magen David” (the Star of David, although literally it is the “Shield of David”.

YYYYYYY

The word “Magen” - מָגֵן appears some 63 times in our beloved Tanakh. In the official JPS-1917 translation, it is most frequently translated as “shield”, “buckler”, or “defence”.

Below are specific, key verses where ‘Magen’ is used in the ‘Torah’, ‘Nevi’im’ (Prophets), and ‘Ketuvim’ (Writings), formatted exactly as they appear in the JPS- 1917 edition.

Please Note: I highly recommend that you use the JPS-1917 version as you can download it free of charge at … https://jps.org › download-the-tanakh-1917-translation (Copy the link and then use it to open).

It is actually a much better translation, than those which have received alterations from the older, more original version of the Tanakh.

“And he made three hundred shields of beaten gold: three pounds of gold went to one shield; and the king put them in the house of the forest of Lebanon”.

A Summary of JPS-1917 Translation Choices:

In the physical sense, the JPS 1917 translation also uses the word “shield” for “Magen” when referring to literal weapons of war, such as King Solomon’s “golden shields” as we saw above in 1 Kings 10:17. Amazingly some “three pounds of gold went to each shield”!

I trust you will have found the word “Magen” - מָגֵן in this study interesting!
