 “Righteous and Upright is He”

צַדִּיק וְיָשָׁר הוּא

(Tzad’dik V'ya’shar Hu)

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

The verse we are looking at today employs a form of ‘parallelism’, a hallmark of Hebrew poetry where ideas echo and reinforce one another. By linking אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s (God) perfection (“His work is perfect”) with the integrity of His judgments (“all his ways are judgment”), the text communicates a unified vision: every aspect of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim being ‘creative’ or ‘adjudicative’, reflects the ‘flawless Divine order’.

Davarim - Deuteronomy 32:4. (JPS-1917 version of the Torah):

הַצּוּר תָּמִים פָּעֳלוכִּי כָל-דְּרָכָיו מִשְׁפָּטאֵל אֱמוּנָה וְאֵין עָוֶל צַדִּיק וְיָשָׁר הוּא

The Rock, His work is perfect; for all His ways are justice; and Elohim, blessed be He, is of faithfulness and without iniquity, אֱלֹהִים Righteous and Upright is He.” Davarim - Deuteronomy 32:4. (JPS).

This verse stands as a poetic summation of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s impeccable character, it is a verse that, when read in its original Hebrew, it resonates with profound layers of meaning. It is of course a part of the “Song of Moshe - Moses”, a song that encapsulates the essence of אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim who has the unshakable foundation and moral exemplar of (‘B’nei Yisrael) - ‘’the people of Israel’.

The Righteous One speaks about אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, blessed be He, thus it is notable to understand that the Almighty is called “Righteous and Upright” as He is devoid of every conceivable injustice. The fact is that true righteousness can only exist in Elohim and it is an integral side of Him. No other being can possibly be so pure and that is without deficiently and cannot become further perfected.

Let us now take a deeper look at this remarkable verse.

1. The Context of the Song of Moshe - Moses:

The Torah and, Davarim - Deuteronomy 32 is known as the Song of Moshe, a recitation that not only recounts Israel’s history but also sets forth the divine qualities essential for understanding אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s relationship with His people. This song is designed to remind the Israelites of the covenant, the expectations placed upon them, and the reliability of the One who has guided and judged them throughout their history. This context underlines that the verse is not a casual description but a solemn, all-encompassing declaration of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s nature.

2. Examining the Key Hebrew Words:

צֻר - Tzur - “the Rock”:

The term “Tzur” far transcends its literal meaning. In ancient Israel, a rock was a symbol of unwavering ‘stability’, ‘protection’, and ‘permanence’. By naming אֱלֹהִים, blessed be He, as “the Rock”, the verse communicates that He is the immovable foundation on which the world and the fate of Israel was built. This imagery reassures us that even in this tragic turbulent world, the Divine anchor remains constant and secure!

תמים - Tamim - “perfect” & “wholly complete”:

The adjective “Tamim” does more than denote perfection in a mechanical sense; it suggests ‘integrity’, ‘completeness, and ‘sincerity’. The perfection of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s work implies that nothing in His operation is marred by flaws, or inconsistency and that His actions are carried out in complete harmony with Divine purpose. For the ancient Hebrew mindset, ‘Tamim’ is also associated with wholeheartedness a call for us to live with unblemished devotion!

In Summary:

From a Hebrew perspective, Deuteronomy 32:4 is not merely a verse but a rich tapestry of imagery and meaning. It encapsulates a אֱלֹהִים whose character is as immovable as a rock, whose works are free from imperfection, whose judgments are the epitome of fairness, and whose truthfulness is the ultimate beacon in the lives of His people. In reflecting on these attributes, believers are called to mirror this integrity and to trust in a divine order that remains steadfast regardless of the challenges of an ever-changing world.
