Re Tanakh versions:

Throughout this site I may use any of three versions of the Tanakh: 1. “Jewish Publication Society” (JPS-1917), 2. “Mechon-Mamre.org” (MEC), and 3. “Sefaria.org” (SEF), three brilliant versions, However, the JPS-1917 is my preferred version!

Colour coded details of our beloved TaNaKh:

1. Torah = History & Law, 2. Nevi’im = The Prophets. 3. *Ketuvim = all other Writings.

*The Ketuvim - Includes, Poetical books - Psalms, Proverbs, Job, the Megillot, or Scrolls - Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations of Jeremiah, Ecclesiastes, and Esther, prophecy of Daniel, and history of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Chronicles I & II.

Please Note: Some alterations or (additions) have been made relating to ‘Names’ and ‘Attributes’ of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God), having been corrected like it once was pre the “Masoretic Text”.

Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

“Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of אֱלֹהֵיכֶם יְהוָה - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

“Psalm Chapter 61: Vv 1-9”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

Psalm 61 opens with a cry from the edge of despair. David feels far away, weak, and overwhelmed. Yet, instead of giving up, he turns his voice upward. He asks אֱלֹהִים - Elohim to pull him up onto a high rock, a place of safety that he cannot reach by himself. This Psalm teaches us that no matter how dark or lonely life gets, our first and best response is to call out to our Creator.

Let us now read Psalm Chapter 61, verses 1 to 9: (JPS-1917 version).

1. “For the Leader; with string-music. (A Psalm) of David.
2. Hear my cry, O
אֱלֹהִים; attend unto my prayer.
3. From the end of the earth will I call unto Thee, when my heart fainteth; lead me to a rock that is too high for me.
4. For Thou hast been a refuge for me, a tower of strength in the face of the enemy.
5. I will dwell in Thy Tent for ever; I will take refuge in the covert of Thy wings. Selah.
6. For Thou, O
אֱלֹהִים, hast heard my vows; Thou hast granted the heritage of those that fear Thy name.
7. Mayest Thou add days unto the king's days! May his years be as many generations!
8. May he be enthroned before
אֱלֹהִים for ever! Appoint mercy and truth, that they may preserve him.
9. So will I sing praise unto Thy Name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows”.

There is no doubt that Psalm 61 is such a heartfelt prayer by David, which was written during a time of deep distress and also isolation. I am using the classical JPS-1917 version of the Tanakh. And it moves from a ‘personal cry of a faint heart’ to ‘absolute trust in אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’ as a secure refuge.

Let us now learn so much more with the Verse by Verse Explanations:

Verse 1: This was dedicated to the musical director for public worship, turning private pain into a shared song of faith.

Verses 2-3: A raw, urgent plea for אֱלֹהִים to listen as David calls from the end of the earth with a fainting heart, seeking a high and immovable rock of safety.

Verses 4-5: Remembering past rescues and strong towers, David expresses a deep desire to dwell in אֱלֹהִים’s tent forever under the covert of His wings, (Selah).

Verses 6-8: Confidence grows as אֱלֹהִים hears vows and grants heritage, extending the king’s days and appointing mercy and truth to preserve him.

Verse 9: A lifelong commitment to sing praise forever and daily perform vows.

My Closing Message:

Psalm 61 reminds us that when our strength ends, אֱלֹהִים’s strength begins. Even from a place of physical confinement or deep trial, our cries are heard in the heavens. May these words lift ‘your spirit’, ‘anchor your soul to the ultimate Rock’, and fill your quiet hours with the loving peace of His presence.
