Re Tanakh
versions:
Throughout this
site I may use any of three versions
of the Tanakh: 1. “Jewish
Publication Society” (JPS-1917), 2. “Mechon-Mamre.org” (MEC), and 3. “Sefaria.org” (SEF), three brilliant versions, However, the
JPS-1917 is my preferred version!
Colour coded details of our beloved TaNaKh:
1. Torah = History & Law, 2. Nevi’im = The Prophets. 3. *Ketuvim = all other Writings.
*The Ketuvim - Includes, Poetical books -
Psalms, Proverbs, Job, the Megillot, or
Scrolls - Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations of
Jeremiah, Ecclesiastes, and Esther, prophecy of Daniel, and history
of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Chronicles I & II.
Please Note: Some alterations or (additions) have been made relating to ‘Names’
and ‘Attributes’ of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God),
having been corrected like it once was pre the “Masoretic Text”.

Remember the following truth
from our beloved Torah!
“Ye
shall NOT ADD
TO THE WORD which I command
you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT,
that ye may keep the commandments of אֱלֹהֵיכֶם יְהוָה - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”.
Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

תְּהִלִּים -
Psalm Chapter 111:1-10. (JPS-1917 version).
1 “Hallelujah. I will give thanks unto יְהוָה
- the LORD with
my whole heart, in the council of the upright, and in the congregation.
2 The works of יְהוָה
- the LORD are great, sought out of all them that have delight therein.
3 His work is
Glory and Majesty; and His Righteousness endureth for ever.
4 He hath made
a memorial for His wonderful works; יְהוָה
- the LORD is gracious and full of compassion.
5 He hath
given food unto them that fear Him; He will ever be mindful of His Covenant.
6 He hath
declared to His people the power of His Works, in giving them the heritage of
the nations.
7 The Works of
His hands are truth and justice; all His precepts are sure.
8 They are established for ever and ever, they are done in
truth and uprightness.
9 He hath sent
redemption unto His people; He hath commanded His Covenant for ever; Holy and
awful is His Name.
10 The fear of יְהוָה
- the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all they that
do thereafter; His praise endureth for ever”.

Key Literary & Theological Features:
Literary
Structure (Acrostic):
Psalm 111 is a perfect alphabetical acrostic (Aleph-Bet) across 22 lines
embedded in 10 verses. This structural totality signifies that אֱלֹהִים
- Elohim’s works
and praise encompass every aspect of creation and language from start to
finish.
Twin
Companion to Psalm 112: Psalm 111 focuses on the character and deeds of אֱלֹהִים
- Elohim (“His work
is glory and majesty...” v. 3), whereas Psalm 112 directly mirrors its language
to describe the attributes of the person who fears אֱלֹהִים
- Elohim (“Wealth
and riches are in his house; and his merit endureth for ever”. (Psalm 112:3).
The
Covenant & History: The psalm moves from creation and wonder into concrete historical acts
of redemption, referencing the Exodus, the giving of the Torah (precepts), and
the inheritance of the land (‘nachalat goyim’, v. 6).

Verse-by-Verse
Explanations:
I. The
Call to Public Thanksgiving (Verses 1-3)
V. 1–2: “I will give thanks unto יְהוָה
- the LORD with my whole heart, in the council of the upright...”
Praise is
intentional and wholehearted, meant to be shared both in intimate circles and
larger gatherings (edah).
V. 3: אֱלֹהִים
- Elohim’s
righteousness (tzidkato) endures forever a baseline concept that grounds all
Divine action.
II. Divine
V. 4-5: “He hath made a memorial for His
wonderful works...”
אֱלֹהִים - Elohim
establishes physical/ritual markers (such as the Chagim/Festivals)
so His acts of grace and provision (channun ve’rachum, thereph) are never
forgotten.
V. 6: “In giving them the heritage of the
nations”.
A key proof-text
often cited by commentators regarding אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s
sovereignty over the earth and the
III. The
Permanence of Torah (Verses 7-9)
V. 7-8: “All His precepts are sure...
established for ever and ever...”
Unlike human
laws, Divine decrees (pikudim) are rooted in enduring truth (emet) and justice (mishpat).
V. 9: “He hath sent redemption unto His
people...”
Redemption
(pedut) leads directly into obligation (tzivvah-le’olam berito /commanding His
covenant forever).
IV. The
Climax of Wisdom (Verse 10)
V. 10: “The fear of יְהוָה
- the LORD is the beginning of wisdom (Reishit Chokhmah Yirat יְהוָה
- the LORD)...”
True insight (sekhel tov) is not merely
theoretical; it is realized in action by doing the Commandments.
