Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

However, sadly both the later priests as well as our rabbis of long ago and of today have, and are shamefully disobeying this command of אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim, בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם קָדוֹשׁוֹ - ‘Baruch Shem Kadosho’ – ‘Blessed be His Holy Name!’

 Tehillim-Psalm 94”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

Tehillim - Psalm 94 is a cry for justice in a world where the wicked seem to prosper. The Psalmist calls upon אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God) as the righteous Judge who ‘sees all’, ‘hears all’, and ‘ultimately defends His people’. It is both a lament and a declaration of faith: although evil appears strong, יְהוָה - אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s justice is certain. The Psalm also challenges the reader to trust that Divine judgment is not delayed out of weakness, but out of wisdom.

Let us now read Tehillim - Psalms Chapter 94: (JPS-1917 version of the Tanakh).

1. O יְהוָה - LORD, Thou אֱלֹהִים to whom vengeance belongeth, Thou אֱלֹהִים to whom vengeance belongeth, shine forth.
2. Lift up Thyself, Thou Judge of the earth; render to the proud their recompense.
3. יְהוָה - LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult?
4. They gush out, they speak arrogancy; all the workers of iniquity bear themselves loftily.
5. They crush Thy people, O יְהוָה - LORD, and afflict Thy heritage.
6. They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless.
7. And they say: ‘יְהוָה - the LORD will not see, neither will the אֱלֹהִים of Jacob give heed’.
8. Consider, ye brutish among the people; and ye fools, when will ye understand?
9. He that planted the ear, shall He not hear? He that formed the eye, shall He not see?
10. He that instructeth nations, shall not He correct? even He that teacheth man knowledge?
11. יְהוָה - the LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.
12. Happy is the man whom Thou instructest, O יְהוָה - LORD, and teachest out of Thy law;
13. That Thou mayest give him rest from the days of evil, until the pit be digged for the wicked.
14. For יְהוָה - the LORD will not cast off His people, neither will He forsake His inheritance.
15. For right shall return unto justice, and all the upright in heart shall follow it.
16. Who will rise up for me against the evil-doers? Who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?
17. Unless יְהוָה - the LORD had been my help, my soul had soon dwelt in silence.
18. If I say: 'My foot slippeth', Thy mercy, O יְהוָה - LORD, holdeth me up.
19. When my cares are many within me, Thy comforts delight my soul.
20. Shall the seat of wickedness have fellowship with Thee, which frameth mischief by statute?
21. They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn innocent blood.
22. But יְהוָה - the LORD hath been my high tower, and my אֱלֹהִים the rock of my refuge.
23. And He hath brought upon them their own iniquity, and will cut them off in their own evil; יְהוָה - the LORD our אֱלֹהִים will cut them off.

Let us now take a look to the ‘verse by verse’ Item, and the Explanations:

Verse 1. “O יְהוָה - LORD, Thou  to whom vengeance belongeth, Thou אֱלֹהִים - Elohim to whom vengeance belongeth, shine forth”.

Explanation: The Psalm opens by acknowledging אֱלֹהִים as the rightful Judge. “Shine forth” is a plea for אֱלֹהִים to reveal His justice openly.

Verse 2. “Lift up Thyself, Thou Judge of the earth; render to the proud their recompense”.

Explanation: A direct call for אֱלֹהִים to rise and act, giving the arrogant exactly what they deserve.

Verse 3. “LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult?”

Explanation: A heartfelt cry of frustration: the wicked seem to celebrate without consequence.

Verse 4. “They gush out, they speak arrogancy; all the workers of iniquity bear themselves loftily.”

Explanation: The wicked speak boldly and proudly, flaunting their wrongdoing.

Verse 5. “They crush Thy people, O יְהוָה - LORD, and afflict Thy heritage”.

Explanation: Their actions harm אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s own people, showing cruelty and oppression.

Verse 6. “They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless”.

Explanation: The Psalmist highlights the worst injustices: harming the vulnerable whom Elohim especially protects.

Verse 7. “And they say: יְהוָה - ‘The LORD will not see, neither will the God of Jacob give heed.’”

Explanation: The wicked believe אֱלֹהִים is blind or indifferent a dangerous delusion.

Verse 8. “Consider, ye brutish among the people; and ye fools, when will ye understand?”

Explanation: A rebuke to those who think this way: their thinking is foolish and senseless.

Verse 9. “He that planted the ear, shall He not hear? He that formed the eye, shall He not see?”

Explanation: A powerful argument: the Creator of hearing and sight is not deaf or blind.

Verse 10: “He that instructeth nations, shall not He correct? even He that teacheth man knowledge?”

Explanation: If אֱלֹהִים teaches nations and humanity, He certainly knows how to correct wrongdoing.

Verse 11.יְהוָה - the LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity”.

Explanation: Human schemes are empty and fleeting compared to יְהוָה - Elohim’s wisdom.

Verse 12. “Happy is the man whom Thou chastenest, O יְהוָה -LORD, and teachest out of Thy law”.

Explanation: Discipline from אֱלֹהִים is a blessing, because it leads to wisdom and righteousness.

Verse 13. “That Thou mayest give him rest from the days of evil, until the pit be digged for the wicked”.

Explanation:  אֱלֹהִים- Elohim’s correction protects the righteous and prepares judgment for the wicked”.

Verse 14. “For יְהוָה - the LORD will not cast off His people, neither will He forsake His inheritance.”

Explanation: A reassurance: אֱלֹהִים does not abandon His people.

Verse 15. “For right shall return unto justice, and all the upright in heart shall follow it”.

Explanation: Justice will ultimately prevail, and the righteous will stand with it.

Verse 16. “Who will rise up for me against the evil-doers? who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?”

Explanation: A cry for help the Psalmist feels alone in resisting evil.

Verse 17. “Unless יְהוָה - the LORD had been my help, my soul had soon dwelt in silence”.

Explanation: Without יְהוָה - Elohim’s intervention, the Psalmist believes he would have perished.

Verse 18. “When I said: ‘My foot slippeth’, Thy mercy, O יְהוָה - LORD, held me up”.

Explanation: Even in moments of weakness, אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s mercy provides stability.

Verse 19. “When my cares are many within me, Thy comforts delight my soul.”

Explanation: אֱלֹהִים brings inner peace even when anxieties multiply.

Verse 20. “Shall the seat of wickedness have fellowship with Thee, which frameth mischief by statute?”

Explanation: A rhetorical question: corrupt rulers who create unjust laws cannot be aligned with אֱלֹהִים.

Verse 21. “They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood”.

Explanation: The wicked unite to harm the righteous and condemn the innocent.

Verse 22. “But יְהוָה- the LORD hath been my high tower; and my אֱלֹהִים the rock of my refuge.”

Explanation: A declaration of trust: אֱלֹהִים is a fortress and a place of safety.

Verse 23

“And He hath brought upon them their own iniquity, and will cut them off in their own evil; יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ - the LORD our אֱלֹהִים will cut them off.”

Explanation: The psalm ends with confidence that אֱלֹהִים will bring justice, turning the wicked’s own evil back upon them. אֱלֹהִים- Elohim

My Closing Message:

Psalm 94 reminds us that although injustice may seem overwhelming, אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s justice is never absent. He sees, He hears, and He acts in His perfect time. The Psalm encourages patience, trust, and confidence that righteousness will ultimately triumph. For anyone feeling oppressed, overlooked, or weary, this Psalm offers both honesty and hope: אֱלֹהִים is your refuge, and He will not forsake you.
