Remember the following truth
from our beloved Torah!
“Ye
shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may
keep the commandments of יְהוָה
אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem,
which I command you”. Davarim -
Deuteronomy 4:2.
However, sadly both the later priests as well as our rabbis of long ago have shamefully disobeyed this command of אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim, בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם קָדוֹשׁוֹ - ‘Baruch Shem Kadosho’ – ‘Blessed be His Holy Name!’

Foreword:
Tehillim - Psalm 9 is a powerful choice, for it is a “triumphant song of judgment”, transitioning from
personal gratitude to a broader plea for divine justice in the world.
Notably, Psalm 9 and
Psalm 10 are often considered a single unit in many Hebrew manuscripts, forming
a partial acrostic (where verses begin with successive letters of the
Hebrew alphabet).
Introduction
to Psalm 9: The Throne of Justice:
Psalm 9 is attributed to David and is set to the tune of Mut Labben (“Death of the Son”). It serves as a bridge between individual experience and national destiny. The central theme is the “Sovereignty of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim as a Righteous Judge”. David is not just praising אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God) for a lucky escape; he is declaring that the universe is governed by a moral law that eventually brings the wicked to account and lifts up the humble!

Let us now read Tehillim - Psalms Chapter 9: (JPS-1917 version of the Tanakh).
1. For the Leader; upon Muthlabben. A Psalm of David.
2. I will give thanks unto יְהוָה - the LORD with my whole heart; I will tell of all Thy marvellous works.
3. I will be glad and exult in Thee; I will sing praise to Thy Name, O Most High:
4. When mine enemies are turned back, they stumble and perish at Thy presence;
5. For Thou hast maintained my right and my cause; Thou sattest upon the throne as the righteous Judge.
6. Thou hast rebuked the nations, Thou hast destroyed the wicked, Thou hast blotted out their name for ever and ever.
7. O thou enemy, the waste places are come to an end for ever; and the cities which thou didst uproot, their very memorial is perished.
8. But יְהוָה - the LORD is enthroned for ever; He hath established His throne for judgment.
9. And He will judge the world in righteousness, He will minister judgment to the peoples with equity.
10. יְהוָה - the LORD also will be a high tower for the oppressed, a high tower in times of trouble;
11. And they that know Thy Name will put their trust in Thee; for Thou, יְהוָה - LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek Thee.
12. Sing praises to יְהוָה - the LORD, who dwelleth in Zion; declare among the peoples His doings.
13. For He that avengeth blood hath remembered them; He hath not forgotten the cry of the humble.
14. Be gracious unto me, O יְהוָה - LORD, behold mine affliction at the hands of them that hate me; Thou that liftest me up from the gates of death;
15. That I may tell of all Thy praise in the gates of the daughter of Zion, that I may rejoice in Thy salvation.
16. The nations are sunk down in the pit that they made; in the net which they hid is their own foot taken.
17. יְהוָה - he LORD hath made
Himself known, He hath executed judgment, the wicked
is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah
18. The wicked shall return to the nether-world, even all
the nations that forget אֱלֹהִים - Elohim.
19. For the needy shall not alway be forgotten, nor the expectation of the poor perish for ever.
20. Arise, O יְהוָה - LORD, let not man prevail; let the nations be judged in Thy sight.
21. Set terror over them, O יְהוָה - LORD; let the nations know they are but men. Selah

Here
we see a new style ‘verse by verse’ with a Commentary:
|
Verse |
Theme |
Explanation |
|
1-2. |
Wholehearted Praise: |
David begins with “all
my heart”. This isn’t superficial thanks; it is an internal overflow of joy
for “marvelous works”. |
|
3-4. |
The Turning of Enemies: |
The enemies retreat not
because of David’s sword, but because of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s “presence”. אֱלֹהִים - Elohim has maintained David's “right and
cause”! |
|
5-6. |
The End of the Wicked: |
A prophetic look at the
ultimate erasure of evil. Their very names are “blotted out”, and their
cities are destroyed and forgotten. |
|
7-8. |
The Eternal Throne: |
While earthly cities
fall (v. 6), the Lord “endures forever”. He judges the world in righteousness
(“tzedek”) and uprightness. |
|
9-10. |
The Refuge: |
אֱלֹהִים is
a ‘Misgav’, a ‘high tower’ or ‘stronghold’. He does
not forsake those who “seek” Him. Knowledge of His Name leads to trust. |
|
11-12. |
The Avenger of Blood: |
Zion is the center of
praise. אֱלֹהִים
“remembers” the humble and
“requires blood” (seeks justice for the oppressed). |
|
13-14. |
A Personal Plea: |
David shifts from
general praise to a specific cry: “Have mercy on me!” He wants to be lifted
from the “gates of death” to the “gates of Zion”. |
|
15-16. |
The Law of Retribution: |
The nations fall into
the very pit they dug. This is “Middah k'neged Middah” (‘measure for
measure’). The wicked are snared by their own hands. |
|
17-18. |
Sheol and the Needy: |
The wicked return to
the grave, but the "expectation of the poor" will not perish
forever. There is a cosmic reversal of fates. |
|
19-20. |
Arise, O Lord: |
A call for אֱלֹהִים to
assert His authority. “Let not man prevail”. |
|
21. |
The Humility of Nations: |
David asks אֱלֹהִים to
put the nations in “fear”, reminding them that they are “but men” (mortal and
finite). |
I pray that you enjoyed the above new style
‘verse by verse’ with explanations?
Conclusion:
The Message of Psalm 9:
The overarching message of Psalm 9 is one of unshakable hope in Divine order. In a world that often feels chaotic or dominated by “the proud”, the Psalmist reminds us that there is a Throne above all earthly powers.
For the scholar and the believer alike,
Psalm 9 teaches that:
Justice is Timely: It may not happen instantly, but the “trap” is already set for those who practice evil.
Memory is a Tool of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim: אֱלֹהִים “forgets” the names of the wicked but “remembers” the cry of the humble.
Perspective is Key: By the end of this Psalm, the “terrifying” nations are revealed to be merely human, frail and temporary compared to the Eternal King.
May this study bring all of us, intellectual satisfaction and spiritual strength!
