Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

However, sadly both the later priests as well as our rabbis of long ago have shamefully disobeyed this command of אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim, בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם קָדוֹשׁוֹ - ‘Baruch Shem Kadosho’ – ‘Blessed be His Holy Name!’

 “Tehillim - Psalm 67”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction to Psalm 67:

Psalm 67 is a beautiful, short “harvest” Psalm, often associated with the counting of the Omer. It is unique because it is shaped like a Menorah in some traditions, with verse 4 forming the central light. It is a prayer for אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s blessing to rest upon Israel so that the entire world might see His salvation. It moves from a desire for personal grace to a vision of global praise.

Let us read Tehillim - Psalms Chapter 67: (JPS-1917 version from the Tanakh).

1. “For the Leader; with string-music. A Psalm, a Song.
2. אֱלֹהִים - Elohim be gracious unto us, and bless us; may He cause His face to shine toward us; Selah
3. That Thy way may be known upon earth, Thy salvation among all nations.
4. Let the peoples give thanks unto Thee, O אֱלֹהִים - Elohim; let the peoples give thanks unto Thee, all of them.
5. O let the nations be glad and sing for joy;
for Thou wilt judge the peoples with equity, and lead the nations upon earth. Selah
6. Let the peoples give thanks unto Thee, O אֱלֹהִים - Elohim; let the peoples give thanks unto Thee, all of them.
7. The earth hath yielded her increase; may, אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, our own אֱלֹהִים, bless us.
8. May אֱלֹהִים bless us; and let all the ends of the earth fear Him”.

Now we will view the ‘verse by verse Item with Explanations.

1. “For the Leader; with string-music. A Psalm, a Song”.

Explanation: The musical direction suggests a joyful, melodic accompaniment. It is both a “Psalm” (Tehillah) and a “Song” (Shir), indicating a high level of praise.

2.אֱלֹהִים - Elohim be gracious unto us, and bless us; and cause His face to shine upon us; Selah”.

Explanation: This verse echoes the Priestly Blessing (Birkat Kohanim). David asks for “grace” favour we have not earned, and for the “light of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s face”, which represents the warmth of Divine approval and presence.

3. That Thy way may be known upon earth, Thy salvation among all nations.

Explanation:  אֱלֹהִים- Elohim anations: The purpose of Israel being blessed is not for selfish gain. It is so that the “nations” will see אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s “way” and His “salvation” (Yeshuat), recognizing Him as the source of all good.

4. “Let the peoples give thanks unto Thee, O אֱלֹהִים - Elohim; let all the peoples give thanks unto Thee”.

Explanation: This is a universal call. David repeats the phrase to emphasize that no nation is excluded from the duty and joy of giving thanks to the Creator.

5. “O let the nations be glad and sing for joy; for Thou shalt judge the peoples with equity, and lead the nations upon earth. Selah”.

Explanation: The world rejoices because אֱלֹהִים is a fair Judge. He does not rule with tyranny, but with “equity” (fairness). He “leads” the nations like a shepherd leads his flock.

6. “Let the peoples give thanks unto Thee, O אֱלֹהִים; let all the peoples give thanks unto Thee”.

Explanation: This refrain is repeated to anchor the Psalm in the theme of gratitude’. It serves as a spiritual heartbeat for the world.

7. “The earth hath yielded her increase; may אֱלֹהִים, our own אֱלֹהִים, bless us”.

Explanation: This refers to a successful harvest. When the earth produces food, it is a physical sign of God's "increase." David asks “our own אֱלֹהִים” - the אֱלֹהִים of the Covenant, to continue this blessing. אֱלֹהִים

8. “May אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, bless us; and let all the ends of the earth fear Him”.

Explanation: The Psalm concludes as it began, with a prayer for blessing. The result of this blessing is “fear” (reverence). When the world sees אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s goodness to His people, they will stand in awe of His Power and Love”.

My Closing Message:

Verse 2 says: “cause His face to shine upon us”. In the darkness of our illnesses and various frustration’s in life, I pray that the light of the Divine Countenance shines through the digital clouds and warms our spirit. May you find that even in these difficult times, that the “earth yields its increase” in the form of peace and spiritual strength for all of us!
