Remember the following two truth’s from our beloved Scriptures!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

Be strong and of good courage, fear not, nor be affrighted at them; for יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ - the LORD thy Eloheycha (God), He it is that doth go with thee; He will not fail thee, nor forsake thee’”.

 “Tehillim - Psalm 50

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

Tehillim - Psalm 50 is a prophetic summons in which אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God) speaks as judge to His people, calling them to ‘genuine covenantal faith’ rather than ‘empty ritual’. The Psalm is traditionally associated with Asaph and emphasizes that אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s concern is not for sacrifices as such but for ‘right relationships’, ‘thanksgiving’, and ‘obedience’. It frames Divine judgment as both ‘public proclamation’ and ‘an invitation to repentance and renewed fidelity’.

Let us now read Tehillim - Psalm 50: (JPS-1917 version of the Tanakh).

1. “A Psalm of Asaph
אֱלֹ - El, אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, יְהוָה - the LORD, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.

2. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, אֱלֹהִים - Elohim hath shined forth.

3. Our אֱלֹהִים cometh, and doth not keep silence; a fire devoureth before Him, and round about Him it stormeth mightily.

4. He calleth to the heavens above, and to the earth, that He may judge His people:

5. ‘Gather My saints together unto Me; those that have made a covenant with Me by sacrifice’.

6. And the heavens declare His righteousness; for אֱלֹהִים, He is judge. Selah

7. ‘Hear, O My people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: אֱלֹהִים, thy אֱלֹהִים, am I.

8. I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices; and thy burnt-offerings are continually before Me.

9. I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he-goats out of thy folds.

10. For every beast of the forest is Mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.

11. I know all the fowls of the mountains; and the wild beasts of the field are Mine.

12. If I were hungry, I would not tell thee; for the world is Mine, and the fullness thereof.

13. Do I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?

14. Offer unto אֱלֹהִים the sacrifice of thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the Most High;

15. And call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver thee, and thou shalt honour Me’.

16. But unto the wicked אֱלֹהִים saith: ‘What hast thou to do to declare My statutes, and that thou hast taken My covenant in thy mouth?

17. Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest My words behind thee.

18. When thou sawest a thief, thou hadst company with him, and with adulterers was thy portion.

19. Thou hast let loose thy mouth for evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit.

20. Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother's son.

21. These things hast thou done, and should I have kept silence? Thou hadst thought that I was altogether such a one as thyself;
but I will reprove thee, and set the cause before thine eyes.

22. Now consider this, ye that forget אֱלֹהִים, lest I tear in pieces, and there be none to deliver.

23. Whoso offereth the sacrifice of thanksgiving honoureth Me; and to him that ordereth his way aright will I show the salvation of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’”.

Let us once again look at this Tehillim in a verse by verse basis, explaining it:

Verse 1:  אֵל, אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה – El, Elohim - the LORD summons the earth; the scene is cosmic אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s voice reaches “from sunrise to sunset.”

Verse 2: Zion is the radiant source; אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s presence shines forth from the holy city.

Verse 3: אֱלֹהִים comes with power; imagery of devouring fire and tempest underscores holiness and judgment.

Verse 4: אֱלֹהִים calls heaven and earth to witness His judgment; angels and creation are summoned.

Verse 5: אֱלֹהִים calls His faithful, those who once made covenant by sacrifice, a summons to the covenant community.

Verse 6: אֱלֹהִים Himself is judge; His righteousness is declared by the heavens.

Verse 7: אֱלֹהִים begins to address Israel directly: a summons to hear and a promise to testify.

Verse 8: אֱלֹהִים asserts His identity as Israel’s אֱלֹהִים; the rebuke is not for ritual alone.

Verse 9: אֱלֹהִים says He does not need their bulls or goats, ritual without heart is hollow.

Verse 10: All creation belongs to אֱלֹהִים; cattle on a thousand hills emphasize divine ownership.

Verse 11: אֱלֹהִים knows every creature; nothing is hidden from Him.

Verse 12: If אֱלֹהִים were hungry He would not tell you, אֱלֹהִים does not depend on our offerings.

Verse 13: אֱלֹהִים already owns the world; offerings do not add to His need.

Verse 14: Proper worship is thanksgiving and fulfilling vows; call to call on אֱלֹהִים in trouble.

Verse 15: Promise of deliverance when the faithful call; a covenantal rescue motif.

Verse 16: אֱלֹהִים turns to the wicked who recite His statutes but reject His ways.

Verse 17: They hate instruction and cast אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s words behind them.

Verse 18: They see אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s blessings as a reward for wickedness and boast of wicked companions.

Verse 19: They call evil good and refuse to repent; their speech is corrupt.

Verse 20: אֱלֹהִים challenges them: “Do you think I am like you?” being a rebuke of presumption.

Verse 21: אֱלֹהִים exposes hypocrisy: they claim friendship with אֱלֹהִים while plotting evil.

Verse 22: Call to consider and return; warning that אֱלֹהִים will not be mocked, a summons to repentance.

Verse 23: Final promise: those who offer thanksgiving honour אֱלֹהִים, and the way of wisdom is to do so.

In Closing:

Tehillim - Psalm 50 calls worshipers to move from ‘ritual to relationship’: אֱלֹהִים desires ‘thankful obedience’, ‘not empty sacrifices’. The Psalm’s courtroom language both warns and invites ‘judgment’ exposes ‘hypocrisy’ but also points the way back to ‘covenant faithfulness and praise’. There is always what is called ‘sincere repentance’!
