Tanakh versions:

Throughout this site I may use any of the following three versions of the TaNaKh1. “Jewish Publication Society” (JPS-1917), 2. Mechon-Mamre.org” (MEC), and 3. “Sefaria.org” (SEF).

Colour coded details of the - TaNaKh:

1. Torah = History & Law, 2. Nevi’im = The Prophets. 3. *Ketuvim = all other Writings.

*The Ketuvim - Includes, Poetical books - Psalms, Proverbs, Job, the Megillot, or Scrolls - Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations of Jeremiah, Ecclesiastes, and Esther, prophecy of Daniel, and history of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Chronicles I & II.

Open Thou mine eyes, that I may behold

wondrous things out of Thy Law!

Tehillim - Psalm 119:18..

(JPS-1917 version of the Tanakh).

Please Note: Some alterations or (additions) have been made relating to ‘Names’ and ‘Attributes’ of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, having been corrected like it once was pre the “Masoretic Text”.

Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

However, sadly both the later priests as well as our rabbis of long ago have shamefully disobeyed this command of אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim, בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם קָדוֹשׁוֹ - ‘Baruch Shem Kadosho’ – ‘Blessed be His Holy Name!’

Tehillim - Psalm 35

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

Psalm 35 is an imprecatory lament in which the Psalmist calls אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God) to act as warrior and defender against false accusers and violent foes. It alternates between urgent petitions for rescue, vivid images of pursuit and shame, and vows of thanksgiving when אֱלֹהִים - Elohim delivers. The structure and language make it ideal for teaching about prayer in crisis, righteous protest, and public praise.

Let us now read Psalm 35: (JPS-1917 version of the Tanakh).

1. A Psalm of David. Strive, O יְהוָה - LORD, with them that strive with me; fight against them that fight against me.
2. Take hold of shield and buckler, and rise up to my help.
3. Draw out also the spear, and the battle-axe, against them that pursue me; say unto my soul: 'I am thy salvation.'
4. Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion that seek after my soul; let them be turned back and be abashed that devise my hurt.
5. Let them be as chaff before the wind, the angel of יְהוָה - the LORD thrusting them.
6. Let their way be dark and slippery, the angel of יְהוָה - the LORD pursuing them.
7. For without cause have they hid for me the pit, even their net, without cause have they digged for my soul.
8. Let destruction come upon him unawares; and let his net that he hath hid catch himself; with destruction let him fall therein.
9. And my soul shall be joyful in יְהוָה - the LORD; it shall rejoice in His salvation.
10. All my bones shall say: ‘יְהוָה - LORD, who is like unto Thee, who deliverest the poor from him that is too strong for him, yea, the poor and the needy from him that spoileth him?'
11. Unrighteous witnesses rise up; they ask me of things that I know not.
12. They repay me evil for good; bereavement is come to my soul.
13. But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth, I afflicted my soul with fasting; and my prayer, may it return into mine own bosom.
14. I went about as though it had been my friend or my brother; I bowed down mournful, as one that mourneth for his mother.
15. But when I halt they rejoice, and gather themselves together; the abjects gather themselves together against me, and those whom I know not; they tear me, and cease not;
16. With the profanest mockeries of backbiting they gnash at me with their teeth.
17. יְהוָה - LORD, how long wilt Thou look on? Rescue my soul from their destructions, mine only one from the lions.
18. I will give Thee thanks in the great congregation; I will praise Thee among a numerous people.
19. Let not them that are wrongfully mine enemies rejoice over me; neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.
20. For they speak not peace; but they devise deceitful matters against them that are quiet in the land.
21. Yea, they open their mouth wide against me; they say: ‘Aha, aha, our eye hath seen it’.
22. Thou hast seen, O יְהוָה - LORD; keep not silence; O יְהוָה - LORD, be not far from me.
23. Rouse Thee, and awake to my judgment, even unto my cause, my אֱלֹהִים - Elohim and my Lord.
24. Judge me, O יְהוָה - LORD my אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, according to Thy righteousness; and let them not rejoice over me.
25. Let them not say in their heart: ‘Aha, we have our desire’; let them not say: 'We have swallowed him up.'
26. Let them be ashamed and abashed together that rejoice at my hurt;
let them be clothed with shame and confusion that magnify themselves against me.
27. Let them shout for joy, and be glad that delight in my righteousness;
yea, let them say continually: ‘Magnified be יְהוָה - the LORD, who delighteth in the peace of His servant’.
28. And my tongue shall speak of Thy righteousness and of Thy praise all the day.

Let us now look at ‘verse by verse’ item with explanations:

Verses 1-3. David summons אֱלֹהִים - Elohim to contend with his adversaries and to arm Himself on the Psalmist’s behalf; the opening frames אֱלֹהִים - Elohim as active warrior and salvation for the oppressed.

Verses 4-8. He asks that those who seek his life be shamed and turned back, using images of chaff, darkness, and snares to describe their defeat.

Verses 9-10. The Psalmist appeals for public disgrace to fall on his enemies and for their counsel to be thwarted.

Verses 11-16. He recounts the false witness and hostile plots arrayed against him, describing how friends and bystanders were turned into accusers.

Verses 17-21. David pleads for אֱלֹהִים - Elohim to see his affliction and not to let the wicked rejoice over his misfortune; he asks that their joy be turned to shame.

Verses 22-26. He petitions אֱלֹהִים - Elohim to judge and to repay the wicked according to their deeds, invoking vivid images of ruin and disgrace for those who devise evil.

Verses 27-28. The Psalm closes with a vow: when אֱלֹהִים - Elohim rescues him, David will give thanks publicly and declare אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s righteousness before the assembly.

My Closing message:

Psalm 35 invites readers to bring raw grievance before אֱלֹהִים - Elohim while refusing to take personal vengeance; it teaches that trusting אֱלֹהִים - Elohim for vindication leads naturally to public praise when deliverance comes.
