Introduction to Tehillm - Psalm 25:
Tehillim - Psalm
25 is a most personal and a communal prayer attributed to David who moves from ‘personal
trust’ to ‘confession’ and ‘instruction’, and ends with a plea for national
deliverance. The Psalm is often treated as an *acrostic
or near acrostic composition, a literary device that suggests completeness and
aids memorization. Its tone is humble, teaching the reader how to approach אֱלֹהִים
- Elohim (God) in distress: with honesty about sin, dependence on divine
guidance, and confidence in אֱלֹהִים
- Elohim’s steadfast mercy.
*An acrostic is a poem, word puzzle, or other composition in which the first letter (or syllable, or word) of each line (or paragraph) spells out a word.

Let us read Tehillim - Psalm 25 based on the JPS-1917 version of the Tanakh!
For the 23 verses of this Psalm, I will place the English translation first, followed by the Ivrit - Hebrew version in order we will able to obtain a fuller understanding of this remarkable Tehillim - Psalm!
1. (A Psalm) of David.
“Unto Thee, O יְהוָה - LORD, do I lift up my soul.
לְדָוִד:
אֵלֶיךָ
יְהוָה,
נַפְשִׁי
אֶשָּׂא
2. O my אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, in Thee have I trusted, let me not be ashamed; let not mine enemies triumph over me.
אֱלֹהַי-בְּךָ
בָטַחְתִּי,
אַל-אֵבוֹשָׁה;
אַל-יַעַלְצוּ
אוֹיְבַי לִי
3. Yea, none that wait for Thee shall be ashamed; they shall be ashamed that deal treacherously without cause.
גַּם
כָּל-קֹוֶיךָ,
לֹא יֵבֹשׁוּ;
יֵבֹשׁוּ, הַבּוֹגְדִים
רֵיקָם
4. Show me Thy ways, O יְהוָה - LORD; teach me Thy paths.
דְּרָכֶיךָ
יְהוָה,
הוֹדִיעֵנִי;
אֹרְחוֹתֶיךָ
לַמְּדֵנִי
5. Guide me in Thy truth, and teach me; for Thou art the אֱלֹהִים - Elohim of my salvation; for Thee do I wait all the day.

בַאֲמִתֶּךָ,
וְלַמְּדֵנִי-
כִּי-אַתָּה,
אֱלֹהֵי
יִשְׁעִי
6. Remember, O יְהוָה - LORD, Thy compassions and Thy mercies; for they have been from of old.
זְכֹר-רַחֲמֶיךָ
יְהוָה,
וַחֲסָדֶיךָ:
כִּי מֵעוֹלָם
הֵמָּה
7. Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions; according to Thy mercy remember Thou me, for Thy goodness' sake, O יְהוָה - LORD.

נְעוּרַי,
וּפְשָׁעַי-
אַל-תִּזְכֹּר
כְּחַסְדְּךָ
זְכָר-לִי-אַתָּה-
לְמַעַן טוּבְךָ

8. Good and upright is יְהוָה - the LORD; therefore doth He instruct sinners in the way.
טוֹב-וְיָשָׁר
יְהוָה;
עַל-כֵּן יוֹרֶה
חַטָּאִים
בַּדָּרֶךְ
9. He guideth the humble in justice; and He teacheth the humble His way.
יַדְרֵךְ
עֲנָוִים,
בַּמִּשְׁפָּט;
וִילַמֵּד
עֲנָוִים
דַּרְכּוֹ
10. All the paths of יְהוָה - the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep His covenant and His testimonies.
כָּל-אָרְחוֹת
יְהוָה, חֶסֶד
וֶאֱמֶת-
לְנֹצְרֵי
בְרִיתוֹ,
וְעֵדֹתָיו
11. For Thy Name’s sake, O יְהוָה - LORD, pardon mine iniquity, for it is great.
לְמַעַן-שִׁמְךָ
יְהוָה;
וְסָלַחְתָּ
לַעֲוֺנִי,
כִּי רַב-הוּא
12. What man is he that feareth יְהוָה - the LORD? Him will He instruct in the way that he should choose.
מִי-זֶה
הָאִישׁ,
יְרֵא יְהוָה-
יוֹרֶנּוּ,
בְּדֶרֶךְ
יִבְחָר
13. His soul shall abide in prosperity; and his seed shall inherit the land.
נַפְשׁוֹ,
בְּטוֹב
תָּלִין;
וְזַרְעוֹ, יִירַשׁ
אָרֶץ
14. The counsel of יְהוָה - the LORD is with them that fear Him; and His covenant, to make them know it.
סוֹד
יְהוָה,
לִירֵאָיו;
וּבְרִיתוֹ,
לְהוֹדִיעָם
15. Mine eyes are ever toward יְהוָה - the LORD; for He will bring forth my feet out of the net.
עֵינַי
תָּמִיד,
אֶל-יְהוָה:
כִּי
הוּא-יוֹצִיא
מֵרֶשֶׁת
רַגְלָי
16. Turn Thee unto me, and be gracious unto me; for I am solitary and afflicted.
פְּנֵה-אֵלַי
וְחָנֵּנִי:
כִּי-יָחִיד
וְעָנִי
אָנִי
17. The troubles of my heart are enlarged; O bring Thou me out of my distresses.
צָרוֹת
לְבָבִי
הִרְחִיבוּ;
מִמְּצוּקוֹתַי,
הוֹצִיאֵנִי
18. See mine affliction and my travail; and forgive all my sins.
רְאֵה
עָנְיִי,
וַעֲמָלִי;

לְכָל-חַטֹּאותָי
19. Consider how many are mine enemies, and the cruel hatred wherewith they hate me.
רְאֵה-אֹיְבַי
כִּי-רָבּוּ;
וְשִׂנְאַת
חָמָס
שְׂנֵאוּנִי
20. O keep my soul, and deliver me; let me not be ashamed, for I have taken refuge in Thee.

21. Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, because I wait for Thee.

Verses 1-7 Trust and Petition:
The theme: Personal surrender and plea for mercy:
David opens with an act of lifting his soul unto אֱלֹהִים - Elohim and affirms trust: “In Thee have I
trusted” (v.2). He asks not to be shamed and appeals to אֱלֹהִים
- Elohim’s long standing compassions and mercies (v.6). The request “Remember
not the sins of my youth” (v.7) is a humble confession paired with a plea
to be remembered according to אֱלֹהִים
- Elohim’s mercy rather than past failures. This section models prayer that
combines trust, vulnerability, and appeal to אֱלֹהִים
- Elohim’s character.
Verses 4-11 Guidance and אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s Character:
The theme: ‘Instruction’, ‘truth’, and ‘covenantal
faithfulness’:
Verses 4-5 and 8-10
emphasize learning ways and being guided in truth. The Psalmist recognizes as
teacher and Saviour, and that אֱלֹהִים
- Elohim’s paths are marked by mercy and truth for those who keep the
covenant (v.10). The righteous fear of יְהוָה - the LORD leads
to instruction and blessing (vv.12–14). Here the Psalm
links ethical living with divine instruction. Humility invites teaching, and covenant
faithfulness yields stability and inheritance.
Verses 15-22 Personal Distress and Communal Hope:
The theme: ‘Deliverance’, ‘protection’, and ‘intercession
for Israel’:
The Psalm returns to urgent personal pleas: eyes fixed on אֱלֹהִים
- Elohim (v.15), requests for grace because of loneliness and affliction (vv.16-18), and a cry for rescue from enemies (vv.19-20). The closing verse broadens the scope: “Redeem
Israel” (v.22), moving from individual need to national redemption. The
structure shows how personal dependence on אֱלֹהִים
- Elohim naturally extends into concern for the community and the covenant
people.
The Conclusion:
Psalm 25 teaches
a balanced spirituality: It is a honest ‘confession’, ‘patiently
waiting’, ‘humble teach ability’, and ‘confident appeal’ to אֱלֹהִים
- Elohim’s loving mercy. Its movement, from personal lament to covenantal hope
and it invites readers to bring both private struggles and communal concerns
before אֱלֹהִים.
Practically, the Psalm encourages regular self examination, ‘seeking אֱלֹהִים
- Elohim’s guidance’, and ‘trusting אֱלֹהִים
- Elohim’s steadfast love’ as it is the foundation for both ‘personal life’ and
‘communal faithfulness’!
