Introduction to Psalm 145:

Tehillim - Psalm 145, famously known in Hebrew tradition as the ‘core of the Ashrei, is a masterpiece of alphabetical design. Thus this Psalm is structured to be "#’seen’ by the mind; it is an acrostic, where almost every verse begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet. This signifies a ‘complete’ praise from ‘Aleph to Tav’.

This Psalm is particularly poignant, as it focuses not on asking אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה – the LORD Elohim, for things, but on ‘extolling’ His character. It moves from the vastness of a ‘Kingdom for all ages’ down to the intimate touch of ‘upholding all that fall’. It is a lesson in the reliability of the Divine Presence!

Let as once again look into the ‘verse by verse’ section which includes Explanation’s.

Verses 1-2:I will extol Thee, my אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, O King... Every day will I bless Thee...

The Psalmist begins with a personal resolution. Notice the phrase ‘forever and ever’. This suggests that praise is not limited by our time on earth; it is a bridge between our current moment and eternity.

Verse 3: "Great is the LORD... and His greatness is unsearchable”.

We acknowledge that human intellect cannot fully grasp אֱלֹהִים - Elohim. For a teacher, this is a humble reminder: we teach what we can, but the subject matter is infinite.

Verses 4-7:One generation shall laud Thy works to another... they shall utter the fame of Thy great goodness...

These verses describe the ‘chain of tradition’. Even in illness, we should try and understand His wondrous works that ensures the next generation and (please אֱלֹהִים - Elohim) will carry Your light!

Verses 8-9:יְהוָה - the LORD is gracious and full of compassion... His tender mercies are over all His works”.

This is the heart of this Tehillim - Psalm. It mirrors the attributes revealed to Moses. The word ‘all’ is vital here; His mercy is not exclusive, it covers every creature and every situation, including yours.

Verses 10-13:All Thy works shall praise Thee... Thy kingdom is a kingdom for all ages...

The focus shifts to אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s sovereignty. While earthly kingdoms and physical health rise and fall, His dominion is ‘throughout all generations’. It is the only truly stable thing in existence.

Verse 14: "The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that are bowed down’.

This is perhaps the most comforting verse for the word ‘upholdeth’ (somekh) implies a continuous support, like a hand under an elbow. If you feel "bowed down" by age or illness, the Psalm promises that אֱלֹהִים - Elohim is the one who sustains your spirit.

Verses 15-16:The eyes of all wait for Thee... Thou openest Thy hand, and satisfiest every living thing...

This portrays that our ever loving אֱלֹהִים - Elohim as the universal Provider. Just as He provides food ‘in due season’, He provides the specific ‘strength’ or ‘favour’ needed for each day’s struggle!

Verse 17: יְהוָה - the LORD is ‘righteous’ in all His ways, and ‘gracious’ in all His works”.

This is an affirmation of faith. Even when ‘His ways’ involve suffering we do not understand, the Psalmist declares that there is a fundamental ‘graciousness’ (kindness) behind the design.

Verse 18:יְהוָה - the LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon Him, to all that call upon Him in truth”.

To be ‘nigh’ is to be near. The only requirement for this closeness is ‘truth’, ‘sincerity of heart’. You do not need to be in a synagogue to be near Him; He is at your side all the time.

Verses 19-20: “He will fulfil the desire of them that fear Him... יְהוָה - the LORD preserveth all them that love Him...”

‘Preserving’ does not always mean the body is spared, but that the soul is kept safe. Those who love Him are held in a protection that transcends physical circumstances!

Verse 21: “My mouth shall speak the praise of יְהוָה - the LORD; and let all flesh bless His holy Name...”

The Psalm ends by returning to the individual, for we can be a contribution sharing His blessed Name to a world-wide community and provide them a wonderful chorus of blessings!

Here is a Closing Message:

Tehillim - Psalm 145 teaches us that the greatest power in the universe, is the “King of all Kings” And He is also the one who reaches down to guide those who are failing. To you whose life who is currently not doing too well, and you are ‘bowed down due to various circumstances’, why not work on ‘extollingאֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim, our Almighty King! הַלְלוּ־יָהּ - Hallelu’Yah.
