Remember the following two truth’s from our beloved Scriptures!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

 Tehillim - Psalm 127

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

Psalm 127 is one of the Songs of Ascents, traditionally linked to Solomon and sung by pilgrims as they made their way to Jerusalem. It contrasts human striving with Divine provision: work and vigilance have value only when יְהוָה - the LORD is the foundation, and true rest and blessing come from His care. This Psalm also celebrates children as a heritage from יְהוָה - the LORD, portraying family as strength and honour like a warrior’s well stocked quiver.

Let us now read this short Tehillim - Psalm 127: (JPS-1917 version of the Tanakh).

1. A Song of Ascents; of Solomon. Except יְהוָה - the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it; except יְהוָה - the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.
2. It is vain for you that ye rise early, and sit up late, ye that eat the bread of toil; so He giveth unto His beloved in sleep.
3. Lo, children are a heritage of
יְהוָה - the LORD; the fruit of the womb is a reward.
4. As arrows in the hand of a mighty man, so are the children of one’s youth.
5. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them; they shall not be put to shame, when they speak with their enemies in the gate

A Short Paraphrase:

Verses 1-2:

Human effort alone cannot secure what truly matters; without יְהוָה - the LORD’s blessing, our work and vigilance are ultimately futile, and He grants rest to those He loves.

Verses 3-5:

Children are a Divine gift and source of strength; a household filled with them is like a warrior’s well stocked quiver bringing ‘joy’, ‘honour’, and ‘confidence before others’.

A brief closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father of the house and city, make our work fruitful by Your presence. Teach us to trust Your provision, to rest in Your care, and to receive children and family as Your blessing. Strengthen our homes so we may stand with courage and gratitude. Amen.
