Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!
“Ye
shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the
LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim -
Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

Verses 25 to 40..
With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.
Introduction:
In the Aleph-Bet of Psalm 119, we arrive at the fourth and fifth gates of the soul. These sections represent a profound spiritual movement from the “dust” of mortality to the “aspiration” for Divine wisdom. Daleth (ד) illustrates the humble soul seeking revival amidst the trials of exile and physical frailty, whilst He (ה) reflects the active petition of the student asking the Almighty to direct their inner inclinations away from vanity and wholly toward the Torah!

Let
us first read, in full verses 25 to 40. (JPS-197 version of the Tanakh).
25. DALETH
- ד. My soul cleaveth
unto the dust; quicken Thou me according to Thy word.
26. I told of my ways, and Thou didst answer me;
teach me Thy statutes.
27. Make me to understand the way of Thy precepts, that I may talk of Thy wondrous works.
28. My soul melteth away
for heaviness; sustain me according unto Thy word.
29. Remove from me the way of falsehood; and grant
me Thy law graciously.
30. I have chosen the way of faithfulness; Thine ordinances have I set [before me].
31. I cleave unto Thy testimonies; O LORD, put me
not to shame.
32. I will run the way of Thy commandments, for Thou
dost enlarge my heart.
33. HE. Teach me, O LORD, the way of
Thy statutes; and I will keep it at every step.
34. Give me understanding, that I keep Thy law and
observe it with my whole heart.
35. Make me to tread in the path of Thy
commandments; for therein do I delight.
36. Incline my heart unto Thy testimonies, and not
to covetousness.
37. Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity, and
quicken me in Thy ways.
38. Confirm Thy word unto Thy servant, which pertaineth unto the fear of Thee.
39. Turn away my reproach which I dread; for Thine ordinances are good.
40. Behold, I have longed after Thy precepts;
quicken me in Thy righteousness.

Here is
the commentary re Psalm 119: verses 25 to 40:
DALETH: ד - Verses 25-32: The Soul Revived.
Verse 25: “My soul cleaveth unto the dust; quicken Thou me according to Thy word”.
The Psalmist begins in a state of ‘Bittul’ (self-nullification), recognizing that life and breath come only from the Divine Promises.
Verse 28: “My soul melteth for heaviness; sustain me according unto Thy word”.
Even when the spirit is weary, the Torah serves as the Mishenet (staff) that provides stability.
Verse 30: “I have chosen the way of faithfulness; Thine ordinances have I set before me”.
This is the exercise of ‘Bechirah’ (free will). One consciously chooses the path of Emunah.
Verse 32: “I will run the way of Thy commandments, when Thou shalt enlarge my heart”.
We note that when God removes the “constriction” of the heart, the service of God moves from a slow walk to a joyful run.
HE: ה - Verses 33-40: The Prayer for Insight.
Verse 33: “Teach me, O LORD, the way of Thy statutes; and I shall keep it at every step”.
The request is for ‘Binah’ (understanding) that lasts throughout one’s entire journey, not just for a moment.
Verse 36: “Incline my heart unto Thy testimonies and not to covetousness”.
A crucial plea for the ‘Yetzer Hatov’ (good inclination) to overcome the desire for material gain.
Verse 37: “Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity, and quicken me in Thy ways”.
Personally, I suggest that “vanity” refers to the distractions of this world that prevent one from focusing on the Eternal One!
Verse 40: “Behold, I have longed after Thy precepts; quicken me in Thy righteousness”.
The section ends with ‘Teshuqah’ (intense longing), asserting that true life is found only in the pursuit of Tzedakah.

My
Closing Message:
I will conclude by revealing that the transition from ‘Daleth’ to ‘He’ is the transition from asking for ‘help asking for ‘help wisdom’? We acknowledge our frailty in the dust, but we will not remain there. By asking the יְהוָה - the LORD, Blessed be His Sanctified Name, to “enlarge our hearts”, we transform our limitations into a vessel suitably perfected for the Torah. May we all merit an “enlarged heart” that allows us to run toward the fulfilment of our blessed ‘Mitzvot’, as is only given in the Torah, with strength and clarity!
