Remember the following truth’s from our beloved Scriptures!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

“Proverbs Chapter 3:5-8”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

The lesson from this study is all about the verse shown hereunder and then, so much more!

“Be not wise in thine own eyes; fear יְהוָה - the LORD, and depart from evil”.

Introduction:

These four verses form a compact teaching on how wisdom and right living flow from a proper relationship with אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim (God), blessed be His Holy Name!

The passage urges a whole hearted trust in יְהוָה - the LORD, and He warns against self reliance, calls for continual acknowledgement of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim in daily life, and promises ‘spiritual’ and ‘bodily well being’ as the ‘fruit of that posture’!

YYYYYYY

Let us now read these remarkable four verses of Mishle Shlomo - Proverbs chapter 3; Vv 5 to 8. Using the JPS-1917 version of the Tanakh in Hebrew and English.

בְּטַח אֶל-יְהוָה, בְּכָל-לִבֶּךָ; וְאֶל-בִּינָתְךָ, אַל-תִּשָּׁעֵן

5. “Trust in יְהוָה - the LORD with all thy heart, and lean not upon thine own understanding.

בְּכָל-דְּרָכֶיךָ דָעֵהוּ; וְהוּא, יְיַשֵּׁר אֹרְחֹתֶיךָ

6. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct thy paths.

אַל-תְּהִי חָכָם בְּעֵינֶיךָ; יְרָא אֶת-יְהוָה, וְסוּר מֵרָע

7. Be not wise in thine own eyes; fear יְהוָה - the LORD, and depart from evil;

רִפְאוּת, תְּהִי לְשָׁרֶּךָ; וְשִׁקּוּי, לְעַצְמוֹתֶיךָ

8. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones”.

Let us now explore these four verses:

Verse 5.Trust in יְהוָה - the LORD with all thy heart; and lean not upon thine own understanding.

Core point: Total dependence on אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God) rather than on human reasoning. The phrase calls for an inner, ‘wholehearted trust’ that refuses to make אֱלֹהִים optional in decision making. Commentators note this is not ‘anti intellect’ but a ‘warning against letting human understanding become the ultimate guide’!

Verse 6.In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct thy paths’.

Core point: Acknowledgement means inviting אֱלֹהִים into every sphere of life our choices, ‘relationships’, ‘work’ so that He can ‘straighten’ and direct the course of your life. The promise is practical: when אֱלֹהִים is ‘consulted and honoured’, the faithful receives Divine guidance and moral alignment!

Verse 7.Be not wise in thine own eyes; fear יְהוָה - the LORD, and depart from evil;

Core point: Humility and reverence are paired here. To “be not wise in thine own eyes” is to resist prideful self sufficiency; to “fear יְהוָה - the LORD” is to cultivate awe and obedience; to “depart from evil” is the ethical outworking of that past fear. I would treat this as a corrective to ‘moral blindness’ and ‘self justification’.

Verse 8.It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones’.

Core point: An encompassing blessing. The imagery (navel, marrow) conveys deep, ‘sustaining health’, ‘physical’ and ‘spiritual’. The text promises that a right trust and conduct will bring ‘restorative’ ‘wellness’ and ‘being’, not merely abstract reward but embodied flourishing!

Conclusion:

Summary: Proverbs 3:5–8 links faithful dependence with wise living and wholeness. The sequence is practical: Trust אֱלֹהִים - Elohim and include Him in every way and cultivate ‘humility’ and ‘reverence’ and turn from evil and you will receive deep ‘healing’ and ‘strength’.
Application: Begin decisions with prayerful acknowledgement of
אֱלֹהִים; and check motives for ‘pride’; choose the path that departs from obvious ‘wrong’; expect that obedience to contribute to real, ‘lasting spiritual well being’!

“Return unto Me, and I will return unto you, saith צְבָאוֹת- יְהוָה- the LORD of hosts”. Mal’a’chi - Malachi 3:7. (JPS).
