Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!
“Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which
I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM
IT, that ye may keep the commandments of אֱלֹהֵיכֶם יְהוָה - the LORD your Eloleichem,
which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

נִצָּבִים
With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.
Introduction:
Parashat - נִצָּבִים - Nitzavim is the 51st weekly Torah portion in our annual Hebraic cycle, being Davarim - Deuteronomy Chapters 29:9 to 30:20.
In Nitzavim (“Standing”), Moses addresses the Israelites, emphasizing the importance of following אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s covenant and of not worshiping other deities. He describes the process of ‘repentance’ and ‘returning to אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’, and stresses that אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s commandments are achievable and “not in the heavens”.
Please Note: All verses are from the JPS-1917 version.

In this week’s Torah portion, ‘Parashat
Nitzavim’, Moses
announces to the People of Israel that the Torah he has handed to them, that
was given to them by יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ - the
LORD our Eloheinu, is for everyone. Through the Torah
the Covenant is established between אֱלֹהִים - Elohim and us the Hebraic people: all the
Israelites and all the mixed multitudes who received the revelation at Mt.
Horeb, all those standing before Moses on the day he is giving this address and
all those not standing before him on that day.
Seemingly everyone agrees with the following two verses;
“I make this covenant and this oath; but with him that standeth here with us this day before יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ - the LORD our Eloheinu, and also with him that is not here with us this day”. Deuteronomy 29:13-14.
This applies not simply to those who skipped out on the meeting for we already know no one skipped out on the meeting because it also said …
“Ye are standing this day all of you before יְהוָה
אֱלֹהֵיכֶם -
the LORD your Eloheichem: your heads, your tribes,
your elders, and your officers, even all the men of
It is basically agreed that when it stated;
“but with him that is not here with us this day”, refers to the generations to
come.
I have long believed that this Parashah comes to teach us that
the covenant is for everyone who accepts it. I love the lines toward the end of
the Parashah that informs
us the ‘Torah is not too lofty for any one of us to grasp’. It is not in the
heavens or beyond the sea. We do not need anyone else since Moses handed it to
us. He has given it to the Hebrew people in perpetuity and it is for all,
forever, if they only accept it! It connects us and unites us as Hebrews, and
it offers us a firm foundation when all things tend to make us feel unsettled.
The recent years has been without a doubt a
long and difficult one, however it has certainly strengthened our
‘understanding of the need for a community’. Whenever it happens that we
welcome a new individual into the covenant having fully affirmed their
commitment to אֱלֹהִים - Elohim and the Covenant, it is the right time,
and this Torah is as much theirs as ours. The moment someone comes to
understand that our Torah, is their Torah, and they will spiritually become
among those standing before Moses in this Torah portion, those he acknowledges
though they were not able to physically be present on that day.
All who enter in faith into the Covenant, they may rest assured, in the knowledge that they are safe in the love of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim and the ‘community’. Thus may Hebraism and the covenant always be there to offer grounding and support on our journeys throughout our lives!
