Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

“Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

 “Our beloved Tanakh”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction: “Our Beloved Tanakh”.

The term “Scripture” or “Scriptures” is used in the Book of Daniel (Daniel 10:21). It refers to the sacred collection of texts that make up our entire Tanakh. The Tanakh is traditionally divided into three major sections, compiling a total of 24 books: First are the five books of the Torah, followed by the remaining 19 books of the Prophets and Writings.

Colour coded details of our beloved TaNaKh:

1. The Torah (5 books): History and Law. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy.

2. The Nevi’im (8 books): The Prophets. Joshua, Judges, Samuel (counted as 1), Kings (counted as 1), Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and (The Twelve Minor Prophets which are counted as a single book).

3. The Ketuvim (11 books): Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, Esther, Daniel, Ezra-Nehemiah (counted as 1), and Chronicles (counted as 1).

Historical Context: The Earliest Fragments of Our Texts

While the original handwritten manuscripts of the ancient scriptural authors have sadly not survived the passage of time, remarkable archaeological discoveries connect us directly to the ancient world:

The Oldest Fragment (c. 600 BCE): The earliest surviving physical pieces of the Tanakh ever found are the ‘Ketef Hinnom’ - ‘Silver Scrolls’. Discovered just outside the Old City of Jerusalem, these tiny, rolled-up silver amulets are etched with the Priestly Blessing (“May יְהוָה - the LORD bless you and keep you...”) from the Book of Numbers. They date back to the First Temple period, before the Babylonian Exile!

The Dead Sea Scrolls (c. 250 BCE – 68 CE): Discovered in desert caves in 1947, the Dead Sea Scrolls include fragments of every single book of the Tanakh except for Esther. Written mostly on durable animal parchment, these scrolls proved that the words we read in our Tanakh today have remained remarkably unchanged for well over 2,000 years.

This site was originally created, for those who desired to return to our blessed and wonderful faith. Thus be wise and work on your faith and pray at least two or three times a day (if possible) and always seek our beloved אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s guidance, for His love is always with us, especially when we seek Him, blessed be He! However this site has become very much a teaching site with hundreds of studies!

Remember what אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, blessed be He, said the following through a number of our prophets...

“Return unto Me, and I will return unto you, saith צְבָאוֹת- יְהוָה- the LORD of hosts” Mal’a’chi - Malachi 3:7. (JPS).
