Re Tanakh versions:

Throughout this site I may use any of three versions of the Tanakh: 1. “Jewish Publication Society” (JPS-1917), 2. “Mechon-Mamre.org” (MEC), and 3. “Sefaria.org” (SEF), three brilliant versions, However, the JPS-1917 is my preferred version!

Colour coded details of our beloved TaNaKh:

1. Torah = History & Law, 2. Nevi’im = The Prophets. 3. *Ketuvim = all other Writings.

*The Ketuvim - Includes, Poetical books - Psalms, Proverbs, Job, the Megillot, or Scrolls - Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations of Jeremiah, Ecclesiastes, and Esther, prophecy of Daniel, and history of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Chronicles I & II.

Please Note: Some alterations or (additions) have been made relating to ‘Names’ and ‘Attributes’ of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God), having been corrected like it once was pre the “Masoretic Text”.

Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

“Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of אֱלֹהֵיכֶם יְהוָה - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

“Our Hebrew Values”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

This study contains many Ivrit - Hebrew words that fill our lives with being charitable, etc. Sadly, there are those who are in need and require our help, and of course we should fulfilling אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s precious will, and care for those who are in need!

Kavod - Respect:

The Hebrew word “Kavod” - כָּבוֹד primarily means ‘honour’, ‘respect’, ‘glory’, and ‘reverence’, However, it can also refer to ‘weight’, ‘importance’, and ‘majesty’. It describes the splendour and Majesty of אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim, as well as the awe and reverence this inspires. Of course we are also to respect people’s differences.

Shalom Ba’yit:

Further interesting Hebrew words like - שְׁלוֹם בַּיִת which simply means ‘Peace in the Home’. This is a typical Hebraic concept regarding living in an environment that is full of peace and other good things. However, the title can also mean, ‘domestic harmony’. It refers to the ideal of maintaining peaceful and harmonious relationships within the entire family, and of course particularly between husband and wife. This concept is considered of significant value in our Hebrew faith, emphasizing the importance of creating a loving and respectful environment within our homes.

B’tzelem Elohim:

Here is just another word with meaning, אֱלֹהִים-בְּצֶלֶם which translates to ‘in the image of אֱלֹהִים – Elohim’. This phrase appears in Genesis 1:27, signifying that humanity was created in אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s image and therefore possesses inherent value.

Chesed - Loving-kindness:

The Hebrew word ‘Chesed’ - חֶסֶד is one of the most profound concepts in our faith, often translated as ‘loving-kindness’, ‘mercy’, or ‘steadfast love’. It describes a type of ‘love that goes beyond mere obligation or legal requirement’; it is a ‘covenantal love’ that is ‘generous’ and ‘unconditional’. In our tradition, the world itself is said to rest upon three pillars, one of which is ‘Gemilut Chasadim’ the bestowing of acts of ‘kindness’. This value is beautifully reflected in the care of those who ‘visit the sick’ (Bikur Cholim) or provide ‘comfort and support’ to those in need.

Tzedakah - Righteousness and Justice:

The word ‘Tzedakah’ - צְדָקָה is often translated as ‘charity’, but its root is Tzedek - צֶדֶק, means ‘justice’ or ‘righteousness’. In our Hebrew values, giving to those in need is not seen as an optional act of generosity, but as ‘a religious obligation to do what is right and just’. It is recognition that all we possess ultimately belongs to Elohim, and we are merely stewards tasked with sharing those blessings to create a fairer world. Whether through a small coin in a ‘Pushke’ (charity box) or a life-changing gift, ‘Tzedakah’ is a pillar that sustains the world.

Every act of respect, every peaceful home, and every deed of kindness is a way of ‘fixing’ what is broken and revealing the hidden majesty of the Creator in our everyday lives.

May these words bring you comfort, strength and guidance, as we all continue to share our wisdom, and live a better life in אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim’s glory, בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם קָדוֹשׁוֹ - ‘Baruch Shem Kadosho’ - ‘Blessed be His Holy Name!’
