“Numbers Chapter 25”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

Numbers Chapter 25 illustrates a pivotal moment where the Israelites at Shittim fall into a crisis of faith, moving from a position of strength to one of compromise. This chapter highlights the dangers of moral and spiritual dilution, showcasing the consequences of abandoning their covenantal identity, which results in severe Divine judgment. The narrative, featuring the actions of Phinehas, centers on themes of zeal, leadership, and the restoration of a fractured relationship with the Divine.

Let us read Numbers Chapter 25, verses 1 to 18: (JPS-1917 version of the Torah). Below this chapter you will find my commentary for this study.

1 “And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit harlotry with the daughters of Moab2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods; and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods. 3 And Israel joined himself unto the Baal of Peor; and the anger of יְהוָה - the LORD was kindled against Israel4 And יְהוָה - the LORD said unto Moses: ‘Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up unto יְהוָה - the LORD in face of the sun, that the fierce anger of יְהוָה - the LORD may turn away from Israel’. 5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel: ‘Slay ye every one his men that have joined themselves unto the Baal of Peor’. 6 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the tent of meeting. 7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand. 8 And he went after the man of Israel into the chamber, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel9 And those that died by the plague were twenty and four thousand. 10 And יְהוָה - the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 11 ‘Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned My wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was very jealous for My sake among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in My jealousy. 12 Wherefore say: Behold, I give unto him My covenant of peace; 13 and it shall be unto him, and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, and made atonement for the children of Israel’. 14 Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers’ house among the Simeonites15 And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a fathers’ house in Midian. 16 And יְהוָה - the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 17 ‘Harass the Midianites, and smite them; 18 for they harass you, by their wiles wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor’”.

Below is my Commentary on Numbers Chapter 25:

Verse: 1-3: The Israelites begin engaging in forbidden relationships with Moabite women, which directly leads to them joining the cult of Baal-peor signifying a complete break in their exclusive covenantal relationship with the Creator.

Verse 4-5: Divine judgment is ordered, requiring the leaders, who bear responsibility for the nation’s spiritual direction, to execute those who openly engaged in this act of idolatry, thus stopping the spread of the plague.

Verse 6-9: A prince of the tribe of Simeon brazenly brings a Midianite woman into the camp, prompting Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, to take immediate action, killing the offenders and halting the plague that had already killed 24,000 people.

Verse 10-13: As a reward for his zeal, which was seen as a necessary, pure act to protect the community’s sanctity, Phinehas is promised a covenant of lasting peace and an enduring priesthood.

Verse 14-15: The individuals involved are identified as Zimri of the tribe of Simeon and Cozbi, a Midianite woman of noble birth, highlighting that the moral corruption had reached the leadership levels.

Verse 16-18: The chapter ends with a mandate to consider the Midianites as enemies, as their deceptive, strategic attempts to corrupt Israel’s spiritual integrity necessitate a strong, protective response against them.

My Closing Message:

The narrative of Shittim reveals that the greatest vulnerabilities often appear when we feel most secure, urging us to remain vigilant against lowering our standards. Phinehas’ actions serve as a powerful reminder of the necessity of unwavering commitment to our deepest convictions in the face of widespread social pressure. Ultimately, this chapter teaches that true peace is not found in compromise but in the courageous, unyielding pursuit of integrity and adherence to our core values.
