Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

“Numbers Chapter 10”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

Numbers Chapter 10 marks a pivotal transition in the wilderness journey. Having completed the spiritual and physical census, and having established the laws of purity and the Passover, the Israelites move from a state of rest into the Sinai wilderness, to a state of movement toward the Promised Land. This chapter details the auditory signals for leadership and the meticulous order of the tribal procession.

Let us read Numbers Chapter 10, verses 1-36: Below the verses are the Explanation’s. (The Chapter is from JPS-1917 version of the Torah).

Verses 1-10: “And יְהוָה - the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: ‘Make thee two trumpets of silver; of beaten work shalt thou make them; and they shall be unto thee for the calling of the congregation, and for causing the camps to set forward. And when they shall blow with them, all the congregation shall gather themselves unto thee at the door of the tent of meeting. And if they blow but with one, then the princes, the heads of the thousands of Israel, shall gather themselves unto thee. And when ye blow an alarm, the camps that lie on the east side shall take their journey. And when ye blow an alarm the second time, the camps that lie on the south side shall set forward; they shall blow an alarm for their journeys. But when the assembly is to be gathered together, ye shall blow, but ye shall not sound an alarm. And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow with the trumpets; and they shall be to you for a statute for ever throughout your generations. And when ye go to war in your land against the adversary that oppresses you, then ye shall sound an alarm with the trumpets; and ye shall be remembered before יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloheichem, and ye shall be saved from your enemies. Also in the day of your gladness, and in your appointed seasons, and in your new moons, ye shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt-offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace-offerings; and they shall be to you for a memorial before your אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God): I am יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloheichem’.

Explanation Verses 1-10: ‘The Silver Trumpets’: The instruction to fashion two silver trumpets (hatzoztrot) creates a formal communication system. Unlike the shofar, which is a natural horn, these silver instruments represent human craftsmanship dedicated to Divine service. The text distinguishes between a plain blast (tekiah) for gathering and an alarm (teruah) for movement or war. This ensures that the massive congregation exceeding six hundred thousand men could act as a single, cohesive unit. Furthermore, these trumpets link the mundane movements of the camp to the spiritual life of the nation, as they were also to be sounded during festivals and sacrifices.

Verses - 11-13: And it came to pass in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth day of the month, that the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle of the testimony. And the children of Israel set forward by their stages out of the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud abode in the wilderness of ParanAnd they took their first journey, according to the commandment of יְהוָה - the LORD by the hand of Moses.

Explanation Verses 11-13: ‘The Departure from Mount Horeb (not Sinai – Sinai simply means ‘wilderness’): The precision of the date the twentieth day of the second month in the second year, highlights that the stay at Mount Horeb was a temporary preparation. The lifting of the ‘Cloud of Glory’ is the definitive signal. This transition from the “Mount of יְהוָה - the LORD” to the “Wilderness of Paran” represents the shift from receiving the Law to applying it through the challenges of the journey.

Verses 14-28: And in the first place the standard of the camp of the children of Judah set forward according to their hosts; and over his host was Nahshon the son of Amminadab. And over the host of the tribe of the children of Issachar was Nethanel the son of Zuar. And over the host of the tribe of the children of Zebulun was Eliab the son of Helon. And the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, who bore the tabernacle, set forward. And the standard of the camp of Reuben set forward according to their hosts; and over his host was Elizur the son of Shedeur. And over the host of the tribe of the children of Simeon was Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. And over the host of the tribe of the children of Gad was Eliasaph the son of Deuel. And the Kohathites the bearers of the sanctuary set forward, that the tabernacle might be set up against their coming. And the standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their hosts; and over his host was Elishama the son of Ammihud. And over the host of the tribe of the children of Manasseh was Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur. And over the host of the tribe of the children of Benjamin was Abidan the son of Gideoni. And the standard of the camp of the children of Dan, which was the rearward of all the camps, set forward according to their hosts; and over his host was Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai. And over the host of the tribe of the children of Asher was Pagiel the son of Ochran. And over the host of the tribe of the children of Naphtali was Ahira the son of Enan. Thus were the journeyings of the children of Israel according to their hosts. And they set forward.

Explanation Verses 14-28: ‘The Order of the Tribes’: The march is not a chaotic flight but a disciplined procession. Judah leads, maintaining the pre-eminence established in earlier chapters. A logistical masterstroke is described in verse 21: the ‘Gershonites’ and ‘Merarites’ move ahead with the Tabernacle structure so that by the time the ‘Kohathites arrive with the sacred vessels (the “Sanctuary”), the structure is already erected. This prevents the holy items from sitting exposed on the ground. Dan serves as the “rearward”, gathering any who fall behind, ensuring no Israelite is left in the wilderness.

Verses 29-32: And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law: ‘We are journeying unto the place of which יְהוָה - the LORD said: I will give it you; come thou with us, and we will do thee good; for יְהוָה - the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel’. And he said unto him: 'I will not go; but I will depart to mine own land, and to my kindred.' And he said: ‘Leave us not, I pray thee; forasmuch as thou knoweth how we are to encamp in the wilderness, and thou shalt be to us instead of eyes. And it shall be, if thou go with us, yea, it shall be, that what good so-ever יְהוָה - the LORD shall do unto us, the same will we do unto thee’.

Explanation Verses 29-32: ‘The Appeal to Hobab’: Moses’ dialogue with Hobab illustrates the inclusive nature of the Israelite mission. Although Israel is the chosen vessel, Moses recognizes the value of Hobab’s desert expertise (“thou shalt be to us instead of eyes”). It also emphasizes the certainty of the Divine promise; Moses does not say “perhaps” we will find good, but “יְהוָה - the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel," inviting others to share in that destiny.

Verses 33-35: And they set forward from the Mount of יְהוָה - the LORD three days’ journey; and the ark of the covenant of יְהוָה - the LORD went before them three days’ journey, to seek out a resting-place for them. And the cloud of יְהוָה - the LORD was over them by day, when they set forward from the camp. And it came to pass, when the ark set forward, that Moses said: ‘Rise up, O יְהוָה - LORD, and let Thine enemies be scattered; and let them that hate Thee flee before Thee’. And when it rested, he said: ‘Return, O יְהוָה - LORD, unto the ten thousands of the families of Israel’”.

Explanation Verses 33-36: ‘The Inverted Nuns and the Liturgy’: The final verses of the chapter are historically set apart in Torah scrolls by inverted Hebrew letters (nuns). These verses serve as a liturgical “bookend” for the movement of the Ark. Moses’ declarations invoking אֱלֹהִים - Elohim to scatter enemies during the march and to return to the people during rest demonstrate that the physical journey is fundamentally a spiritual one. The Ark “seeking out a resting-place” shows that אֱלֹהִים - Elohim precedes the people, preparing the way before they even arrive.

My Closing Message:

Numbers 10 teaches us that the journey toward a holy destination requires both Divine guidance and human organization. The silver trumpets and the structured march remind us that inspiration must be matched by discipline. As the Ark moved, so did the people, showing that when we align our movement with the Divine Presence, even the wilderness becomes a path to the Promise.
