Re Tanakh versions:

Throughout this site I may use any of three versions of the Tanakh: 1. “Jewish Publication Society” (JPS-1917), 2. “Mechon-Mamre.org” (MEC), and 3. “Sefaria.org” (SEF), three brilliant versions, However, the JPS-1917 is my preferred version!

Colour coded details of our beloved TaNaKh:

1. Torah = History & Law, 2. Nevi’im = The Prophets. 3. *Ketuvim = all other Writings.

*The Ketuvim - Includes, Poetical books - Psalms, Proverbs, Job, the Megillot, or Scrolls - Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations of Jeremiah, Ecclesiastes, and Esther, prophecy of Daniel, and history of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Chronicles I & II.

Please Note: Some alterations or (additions) have been made relating to ‘Names’ and ‘Attributes’ of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God), having been corrected like it once was pre the “Masoretic Text”.

Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

“Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of אֱלֹהֵיכֶם יְהוָה - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

“Leviticus Chapter 22: verses 31-33”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD

Today, we are going to look closely at certain verses, which makes a lot of sense. It is Leviticus Chapter 22, verses 31 to 33. (JPS-1917 version of the Torah). First in Hebrew, and then in English.

“And ye shall keep My Commandments, and do them: I am יְהוָה - the LORD. And ye shall not profane My Holy Name; but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel: I am יְהוָה - the LORD who hallow you, that brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your אֱלֹהִים - Elohim: I am יְהוָה - the LORD”

Looking at the verses above from Leviticus Chapter 22, verses 31 through 33, let us take a closer look at the details within it!

The Closing Seal of Holiness and Redemption:

The Dual Framework of Commandment and Name (Verses 31-32), the passage concludes this section of Leviticus with a direct call to action: keeping and doing the Commandments, immediately anchored by the personal Divine Name, יְהוָה - the LORD. To keep the commandments and to guard the holiness of the Name are presented as deeply intertwined. To profane the Name is to act contrary to the covenantal reality established at the Exodus, whereas Sanctifying the Name involves active obedience among the congregation of Israel!

The Divine Attribute of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim and Redemption (Verse 33) The concluding verse grounds the entire mandate in historical redemption: “that brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your Elohim: I am יְהוָה - the LORD”. Here, the attribute of Elohim, denoting ‘majesty’, ‘authority’, and ‘ultimate sovereignty’ is explicitly linked to the defining historical act of deliverance. The liberation from Egypt was not merely physical freedom, but the establishment of a relationship where the Divine Sovereignty is formally recognized through adherence to the Torah.

Rabbi ‘Moses ben Maimon’, also known as ‘Maimonides’ has a perspective on Holiness and the blessed Name In his philosophical and legal writings, Maimonides emphasizes that the Sanctification of the Divine Name are foundational pillars of ethical and religious life. He views the observance of the commandments not as arbitrary decrees, but as a disciplined path toward moral refinement and the acknowledgment of divine sovereignty in daily actions.

In order to expand on the above themes and see how they are reinforced elsewhere in the Torah, below are additional verses from the Torah that enrich and complement’s the very three verses above.

Suggested Additional Verses:

Leviticus 19:2:

“Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them: Ye shall be holy; for I יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloheichem am Holy”.

Why it connects: This sets the foundational expectation for Holiness that echoes directly into the call to sanctify אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s Name in chapter 22.

Leviticus 20:8:

“And ye shall keep My Statutes, and do them: I am יְהוָה - the LORD who sanctify you."

Why it connects: It reinforces the direct phrase and Divine authority behind the command to perform the statutes, anchoring action directly to the identity of יְהוָה - the LORD.

Leviticus 22:2-3:

“Speak unto Aaron and to his sons, that they separate themselves from the holy things of the children of Israel, which they hallow unto Me, and that they profane not my Holy Name in those things which they hallow unto me: I am יְהוָה - the LORD”.

Why it connects: Looking slightly earlier in the exact same chapter, this verse provides the specific context for what it means to guard the holiness of the Divine name in practice. And that is of course obvious, for we may only use it in ‘prayer’, ‘reading the blessed Torah’ and during ‘blessings’, etc.

Numbers 15:40-41:

“That ye may remember, and do all My Commandments, and be Holy unto your אֱלֹהִים - Elohim. I am יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloheichem, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your אֱלֹהִים - Elohim: I am יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloheichem”.

Why it connects: This mirrors the exact historical and theological anchor used at the close of Leviticus 22, verse 33, related to the Exodus from Egypt as the definitive basis for keeping the Commandments, and thus the closing message being; “I am יְהוָה - the LORD”!

Ancient priests and rabbi, removed the use of the blessed Name, however that was against what our beloved אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim so clearly told us in the Tanakh, through His prophets!

Jeremiah 29:12. “And ye shall call upon Me, and go and pray unto Me, and I will hearken unto you”.

Isaiah 55:6. “Seek ye יְהוָה - the LORD while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near”.

Joel 3:5. “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the Name of יְהוָה - the LORD shall be delivered...”
