Re Tanakh versions:
Throughout
this site I may use any of three versions of the Tanakh: 1. “Jewish Publication Society” (JPS-1917), 2. “Mechon-Mamre.org” (MEC), and 3. “Sefaria.org” (SEF), three brilliant versions, However, the
JPS-1917 is my preferred version!

Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!
“Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which
I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM
IT, that ye may keep the commandments of אֱלֹהֵיכֶם יְהוָה - the LORD your Eloleichem,
which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

Introduction
to Jeremiah Chapter 31:
Jeremiah Chapter 31 is the pinnacle of the “Book of
Consolation” (Chapters 30–31). Prophesied against the bleak backdrop of
impending national collapse, exile, and the destruction of
The primary literary thrust of this chapter is the absolute permanence
of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s relationship with the Hebraic people. In the verses leading
up to this study, the text emphasizes a return from the lands of captivity, the
rebuilding of the desolate towns, and a shift from national mourning to vibrant
joy.
Verses 30 to 34 move from the
collective national identity to the intersection of the individual soul and
national destiny. They outline a profound transition: first, a recalibration of
personal accountability, and second, an everlasting structural renewal of the
covenant between אֱלֹהִים - Elohim and the
twin houses of

30 and 31:
Let me commence with these two verses - first in Hebrew, followed by
English, using only the JPS-1917 version.
Individual Accountability (Verse 30-31):

days come, saith יְהוָה
- the LORD, that I will make a new
covenant with the house of
Explanation: The prophet dismisses the
generational complaint of the “sour grapes” proverb, establishing that
multi-generational punishment is replaced by direct individual accountability,
where every person dies only for their own iniquity. Within these two verses אֱלֹהִים - Elohim announces a future renewed
covenant specifically with "the house of
Verses
32 and 33:

הָהֵם, נְאֻם-יְהוָה,
נָתַתִּי אֶת-תּוֹרָתִי
בְּקִרְבָּם, וְעַל-לִבָּם

“But this is
the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith יְהוָה - the LORD, I will put My law in their
inward parts, and in their heart will I write it; and I will be their אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, and they shall be My people”;
Explanation: Contrast with

אֶת-רֵעֵהוּ
וְאִישׁ אֶת-אָחִיו
לֵאמֹר, דְּעוּ,

“And they
shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying:
'Know יְהוָה - the LORD'; for they shall all know
Me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith יְהוָה - the LORD; for I will forgive their
iniquity, and their sin will I remember no more”.
Explanation: Interiorization
of the Torah (Verse 33): אֱלֹהִים - Elohim promises to place His law within them and
write it directly on their hearts, ensuring an organic, enduring relationship
where He is their אֱלֹהִים - Elohim and they are His people.

Additional Insights Verse 34 from the JPS Context:
כֹּה אָמַר
יְהוָה, נֹתֵן

“Thus saith יְהוָה - the LORD, Who giveth
the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars
for a light by night, who stirreth up the sea,
that the waves thereof roar, צְבָאוֹת-יְהוָה
- the LORD of Tzva’ot
(hosts) is His Name”.
(Verse 34) In the Hebrew structure, this verse forms the unshakeable
premise for the guarantee that follows. It links the permanence of the Hebrew
people to the fixed, physical architecture of the universe.
The Divine Cosmic Blueprint (Chukkot / חֻקֹּת):
Verse 34 gave us the following: “...and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a
light by night...”
The
Hebrew Nuance:
The word translated as “ordinances” is חֻקֹּת (chukkot), from the root ח-ק-ק, meaning “to engrave”, “decree”,
or “carve into stone”.
The
Meaning: These are
not passive occurrences; they are ‘immutable’, unbreakable laws of nature
carved into the fabric of physical reality by the Creator. The rising of the
sun and the celestial paths of the moon and stars operate on a fixed
mathematical and physical decree that cannot be arbitrarily suspended.
