Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

“Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of אֱלֹהֵיכֶם יְהוָה - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

“Israel and Gaza”

Israel and Gaza: Prophecies we Should Know Right Now!

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Israel is once again in the world news headlines as they were attacked by Hamas, being the evil Iranian terrorist of the feast of Sukkot on Saturday, October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched thousands of rockets at Israel within a very short period, overwhelming the sophisticated ‘Iron Dome anti-missile system’.

As a result, thousand’s Israelis have tragically lost their lives, and the toll continues to rise as we speak. Hamas’ attack was considered one of the deadliest in recent history for the small nation of Israel.

In response to the aggression, Israel’s Prime Minister, Netanyahu, formally declared war against Hamas and warned of a “long and difficult war”.

As we observed this horrific conflict unfolding in the Middle East, it prompts us to turn to the Tanakh and seek insights about our modern age. Where will these events lead us? What does Tanakh prophecy has to say about the fate of ‘Israel’, ‘Hamas’, and ‘Gaza’, and its ‘neighboring countries?’ Does the Tanakh provide us with all the answers?

Join me now as we delve deep into the Tanakh to discover the surprising prophecies it holds about the conflict we are witnessing in ‘Israel’ and ‘Gaza’.

Today, we are going to take a look at the Tanakh and obtain spiritual and powerful insights you will never find in mainstream news today.

We need to remember that is was Hamas who attacked Israel, thus they sadly break out war against Hamas, who together with the Iranian ayatollah vowed to completely ‘destroy’ and ‘obliterate Israel’ for a long time. Hamas fired countless rockets from the Gaza Strip, from the southern part of Gaza.

Did you know that the Tanakh mentions ‘Gaza’ some 20 times. The very first mention of ‘Gaza’ is in Deuteronomy 2:20-23:

“That also is accounted a land of Rephaim: Rephaim dwelt therein aforetime; but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakim; but יְהוָה - the LORD destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead; as He did for the children of ‘Esau’, that dwell in Seir, when He destroyed the ‘Horites’ from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day; and the ‘Avvim’, that dwelt in villages as far as ‘Gaza’, the ‘Caphtorim’, that came forth out of ‘Caphtor’, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead”.

We read in Joshua 10:41 that Joshua’s conquest conquered ‘Gaza’.

“And Joshua smote them from ‘Kadesh-barnea’ even unto ‘Gaza’, and all the country of ‘Goshen’, even unto ‘Gibeon’. And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the יְהוָה - LORD, the אֱלֹהִים - Elohim of Israel, fought for Israel”.

Judah’s territory included ‘Gaza’ as we read in Judges 1:18-19.

“Also Judah took Gaza with the border thereof and Ashkelon with the border thereof and Ekron with the border thereof. And יְהוָה - the LORD was with Judah; and he drove out the inhabitants of the hill-country; for he could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron”.

When Israel did evil in the sight of יְהוָה - the LORD, the ‘Midianites’ destroyed ‘Gaza’ as we read in Judges 6:1-4.

“And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of יְהוָה - the LORD; and יְהוָה - the LORD delivered them into the hand of ‘Midian seven years’. And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds. And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them; and they encamped against them, and destroyed the produce of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass”.

‘Gaza’ holds significant historical and prophetic importance in the Tanakh. It was a place visited by Samson, where he found a woman he liked, and possibly where he lost his eyes and was imprisoned. Both Solomon’s reign (1 Kings 4:22-24) and Hezekiah’s reign (2 Kings 18:1,7-8) included ‘Gaza’.

The prophesied destruction of Gaza:

Jeremiah 25:17-29 contains a prophecy about a calamity that will destroy ‘Gaza’.

“Then took I the cup of יְהוָה - the LORD’s hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom יְהוָה - the LORD had sent me: Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and the kings thereof, and the princes thereof, to make them an ‘appalment’, an ‘astonishment’, a ‘hissing’, and ‘a curse’; as it is this day; Pharaoh king of Egypt, and his servants, and his princes, and all his people; and all the mingled people; and all the kings of the land of ‘Uz’, and all the kings of the land of the ‘Philistines’, and ‘Ashkelon’, and ‘Gaza’, and ‘Ekron’, and the remnant of ‘Ashdod’; ‘Edom’, and ‘Moab’, and the ‘children of Ammon’; and ‘all the kings of Tyre’’, and ‘all the kings of Zidon, and ‘the kings of the isle which is beyond the sea; ‘Dedan’, and ‘Tema’, and ‘Buz, and all that have the corners of their hair polled; and ‘all the kings of Arabia’, and all the kings of the mingled people that dwell in the wilderness’; and ‘all the kings of Zimri’, ‘and all the kings of Elam’, ‘and all the kings of the Medes’; ‘and all the kings of the north’, ‘far’ and ‘near’, one with another; and all the kingdoms of the world, which are upon the face of the earth. ‘And the king of Sheshach shall drink after them’. And thou shalt say unto them: Thus saith צְבָאוֹת-יְהוָה - the LORD of Tzva’ot (Hosts), the אֱלֹהִים - Elohim of Israel: Drink ye, and be ‘drunken’, and ‘spew’, and ‘fall’, and ‘rise no more’, because of the sword which I will send among you’. And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thy hand to drink, then shalt thou say unto them: Thus saith צְבָאוֹת-יְהוָה - the LORD of Tzva’ot: Ye shall surely drink. For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city whereupon My Name is called, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished; for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith צְבָאוֹת-יְהוָה - the LORD of Tzva’ot”.

In Amos 1:6-8, there is a warning from יְהוָה - the LORD about punishment coming to ‘Gaza’ for its many transgressions.

The prophecy speaks of a fire consuming ‘Gaza’s’ palaces and the eventual destruction of the Philistines.

Amos 1:6-8 tells us:

“Thus saith יְהוָה - the LORD: For three transgressions of Gaza, yea, for four, I will not reverse it: because they carried away captive a whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom. So will I send a fire on the wall of Gaza, and it shall devour the palaces thereof; And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him that holdeth the sceptre from Ashkelon; and I will turn My hand against Ekron, and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim”.

The end-time prophecy for ‘Gaza’ appears grim in the Tanakh. While some of these prophecies might have been fulfilled in the past, there is a duality in their fulfilment, suggesting that similar events may well occur in the future.

The future defeat of Israel:

Nevertheless, the central focus of Tanakh prophecy goes back to Israel. Despite Israel’s reliance on the Iron Dome anti-missile system in the past, current events indicate that this defense mechanism will eventually fail, leading to Israel’s increasing vulnerability and potential destruction.

Indeed, Isaiah 22:8-9 portrays a warning about אֱלֹהִים - Elohim removing His protection from Israel because of their iniquities and rebellion against Him.

We read:

“He removed the protection of Judah. You looked in that day to the armor of the House of the Forest; You also saw the damage to the city of David, That it was great; And you gathered together the waters of the lower pool”.

So, yes, Jerusalem would once again fall into the hands of the Gentiles. Truly, we are living in a time where there’s an increasing magnitude of conflict in the Middle East.

The Only Solution to the War in the Middle East:

Nevertheless, the solution to this world’s ailing strife and conflict will not come from man, but rather the solution would literally be out of this world.

Yes, it is a scary time to live in, but we must not lose hope. As we observe world events, we should understand that the coming of great change is drawing near. Thus do not succumb to despair.

As we wait for His return, let us not forget the instruction in Psalm 122:6: “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem”.

Yes, let’s pray for those affected by this terrible war. Let us pray for the innocent people impacted by conflict!
