Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

 Isaiah Chapter 9

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

In Chapter 9, the tone shifts from the looming shadows of the Assyrian invasion to a magnificent vision of future restoration. While the northern lands (Zebulun and Naphtali) were the first to feel the sting of exile, Isaiah prophesies that they will be the first to see a “great light”. This chapter identifies a child born to the royal house who will embody אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s (God’s) justice and ensure the eternal stability of the Throne of David.

Let us now read Yeshayahu - Isaiah Chapter 9: (JPS-1917 version of the Tanakh).

1. “The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; they that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

2. Thou hast multiplied the nation, Thou hast increased their joy; they joy before Thee according to the joy in harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

3. For the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, Thou hast broken as in the day of Midian.

4. For every boot stamped with fierceness, and every cloak rolled in blood, shall even be for burning, for fuel of fire.

5 For a child is born unto us, a son is given unto us; and the government is upon his shoulder; and his name is called ‘Pele-joez-el-gibbor-Abi-ad-sar-shalom’;

6. That the government may be increased, and of peace there be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it through justice and through righteousness from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of צְבָאוֹת-יְהוָה - the LORD of hosts doth perform this.

7. יְהוָה - the LORD sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel.

8. And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in pride and in arrogancy of heart:

9. 'The bricks are fallen, but we will build with hewn stones; the sycamores are cut down, but cedars will we put in their place.'

10. Therefore יְהוָה - the LORD doth set upon high the adversaries of Rezin against him, and spur his enemies;

11. The Arameans on the east, and the Philistines on the west; and they devour Israel with open mouth. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

12. Yet the people turneth not unto Him that smiteth them, neither do they seek צְבָאוֹת-יְהוָה - the LORD of hosts.

13. Therefore יְהוָה - the LORD doth cut off from Israel head and tail, palm-branch and rush, in one day.

14. The elder and the man of rank, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail.

15. For they that lead this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed.

16. Therefore יְהוָה - the LORD shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall He have compassion on their fatherless and widows; for every one is ungodly and an evil-doer, and every mouth speaketh wantonness. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

17. For wickedness burneth as the fire; it devoureth the briers and thorns; yea, it kindleth in the thickets of the forest, and they roll upward in thick clouds of smoke.

18. Through the wrath of יְהוָה - the LORD of hosts is the land burnt up; the people also are as the fuel of fire; no man spareth his brother.

19. And one snatcheth on the right hand, and is hungry; and he eateth on the left hand, and is not satisfied; they eat every man the flesh of his own arm:

20. Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh; and they together are against Judah. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still”.

Let us now check the verse by verse study with explanations:

Verse 1: For is there no gloom to her that was stedfast? Now the former hath lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but the latter hath dealt more sorely by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, in the district of the nations.

Explanation: This verse acknowledges the intense suffering of the northern tribes. Being on the border, they were the first to be “lightly afflicted” and then “sorely dealt with” by the Assyrian armies. Yet, Isaiah suggests that this very region, once darkened by war, is destined for a change in status.

Verse 2: The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; they that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

Explanation: The “darkness” refers to the despair of invasion and spiritual wandering. The “light” represents אֱלֹהִים- Elohim’s intervention and the hope of a coming deliverance that will pierce through the gloom of national defeat.

Verse 3: Thou hast multiplied the nation, Thou hast increased their joy; they joy before Thee according to the joy in harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

Explanation: Isaiah envisions a restored and populous Israel. The metaphors of “harvest” and “dividing spoil” indicate a time of abundance and victory where the people are no longer the victims of plunder, but the recipients of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s bounty.

Verse 4: For the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, Thou hast broken as in the day of Midian.

Explanation: אֱלֹהִים will break the Assyrian “yoke”. The reference to the “day of Midian” recalls Gideon’s victory, where אֱלֹהִים delivered Israel through a small, unlikely force, proving that the victory belongs to יְהוָה - the LORD, not to human military might.

Verse 5: For every boot stamped with fierceness, and every cloak rolled in blood, shall even be for burning, for fuel of fire.

Explanation: This is a vivid image of the end of war. The bloody garments and heavy boots of the invading soldiers are gathered up and burned because they are no longer needed. A permanent peace is being established.

Verse 6: For a child is born unto us, a son is given unto us; and the government is upon his shoulder; and his name is called “Pele-joez-el-gibbor-Abi-ad-sar-shalom”;

Explanation: This famous verse identifies the catalyst for this peace: a royal child. In the Jewish tradition, this is often understood as referring to King Hezekiah or the ideal Davidic King. The long Hebrew name is a descriptive title meaning: “Wonderful in counsel is אֱלֹהִים the Mighty, the Everlasting Father, the Ruler of Peace” (or alternatively, that the child will be called “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty אֱלֹהִים,” etc., as attributes reflecting אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s work through the king).

Verse 7: That the government may be increased, and of peace there be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it through justice and through righteousness from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of יְהוָה - the LORD of hosts doth perform this.

Explanation: Unlike the failed reign of Ahaz, this ruler will lead with “justice and righteousness”. The survival of the Davidic line is guaranteed not by political maneuvering, but by the "zeal of יְהוָה - the LORD”.

Verses 8-11: יְהוָה - the LORD sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel. And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria ... The bricks are fallen, but we will build with hewn stones ... Therefore יְהוָה - the LORD doth set up on high against him the adversaries of Rezin.

Explanation: The prophecy shifts back to a warning for the Northern Kingdom (Ephraim). In their pride, they claimed they would rebuild stronger after the Assyrian strikes, ignoring the fact that the strikes were a Divine warning. Because they refuse to repent, אֱלֹהִים will stir up their enemies further.

Verses 12-20: (Summary of the closing judgements).

Explanation: The remainder of the chapter describes a society in total collapse due to wickedness. Isaiah describes “no man sparing his brother” and a “hunger” that cannot be satisfied. It serves as a stark contrast to the “Prince of Peace” mentioned earlier, showing that without אֱלֹהִים - Elohims righteousness, a nation eventually consumes itself.

My Closing Message:

Isaiah Chapter 9 presents the ultimate contrast between human arrogance and Divine promise. While the leaders of Ephraim thought they could rebuild through their own strength, Isaiah points toward a “Child” a symbol of a new beginning and a different kind of leadership based on    אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s peace. For your ministry, this chapter reinforces that true national security is a gift from אֱלֹהִים, found only when the “government” is placed upon the shoulders of one who walks in His righteousness.
