Remember the following truth from our beloved
Torah!
“Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

Introduction:
Isaiah 48 serves as a bridge between the rebuke of Israel’s past stubbornness and the glorious promise of their future redemption, addresses a people who “swear by the Name of יְהוָה - the LORD” but not in “truth nor in righteousness”. It is a chapter of refined transition, where אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God) explains that His upcoming miracles are done for His own Name’s sake, so that no idol can claim credit for the nation's survival.

Let us read Yeshayahu
- Isaiah Chapter 48: (JPS-1917 version of the Tanakh).
1. Hear ye this, O house of
Jacob, who are called by the Name of Israel, and are come forth out of the
fountain of Judah; who swear by the Name of יְהוָה - the
LORD, and make mention of the אֱלֹהִים
- Elohim of Israel, but
not in truth, nor in righteousness.
2. For they call themselves of the holy city, and stay themselves upon the אֱלֹהִים of Israel, צְבָאוֹת-יְהוָה - the LORD of hosts is His Name.
3. I have declared the former things from of old; yea, they went forth out of My mouth, and I announced them; suddenly I did them, and they came to pass.
4. Because I knew that thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass;
5. Therefore I have declared it to thee from of old; before it came to pass I announced it to thee; lest thou shouldest say: ‘Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image, hath commanded them’.
6 Thou hast heard, see, all this; and ye, will ye not declare it? I have announced unto thee new things from this time, even hidden things, which thou hast not known.
7. They are created now, and not from of old, and before this day thou heardest them not; lest thou shouldest say: ‘Behold, I knew them’.
8. Yea, thou heardest not; yea, thou knewest not; yea, from of old thine ear was not opened; for I knew that thou wouldest deal very treacherously, and wast called a transgressor from the womb.
9. For My Name's sake will I defer Mine anger, and for My praise will I refrain for thee, that I cut thee not off.
10. Behold, I have refined thee, but not as silver; I have tried thee in the furnace of affliction.
11. For Mine own sake, for Mine own sake, will I do it; for how should it be profaned? And My glory will I not give to another.
12. Hearken unto Me, O Jacob, and Israel My called: I am He; I am the first, I also am the last.
13. Yea, My hand hath laid the foundation of the earth, and My right hand hath spread out the heavens; when I call unto them, they stand up together.
14. Assemble yourselves, all ye, and hear; which among them hath declared these things? He whom יְהוָה - the LORD loveth shall perform His pleasure on Babylon, and show His arm on the Chaldeans.
15. I, even I, have spoken, yea, I have called him; I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous.
16. Come ye near unto Me, hear ye this: From the beginning I have not spoken in secret; from the time that it was, there am I; and now אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim hath sent me, and His spirit.
17. Thus saith יְהוָה - the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am יְהוָה - the LORD thy Elohim, who teacheth thee for thy profit, who leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.
18. Oh that thou wouldest hearken to My commandments! then would thy peace be as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea;
19. Thy seed also would be as the sand, and the offspring of thy body like the grains thereof; his Name would not be cut off nor destroyed from before Me.
20. Go ye forth from Babylon, flee ye from the Chaldeans; with a voice of singing declare ye, tell this, utter it even to the end of the earth; say ye: ‘יְהוָה - the LORD hath redeemed His servant Jacob.
21. And they thirsted not when He led them through the deserts; He caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them; He cleaved the rock also, and the waters gushed out’.
22. There is no peace, saith יְהוָה - the LORD concerning the wicked”.

We can now check the ‘verse by verse’ and the Explanations:
v. 1-2: The Formal Call:
Explanation: אֱלֹהִים
addresses the “house of Jacob”, those who claim the title of the “holy city”
but lack the internal alignment with אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s truth.
v. 3-5: Preventing
Idolatry:
Explanation: אֱלֹהִים declares that He told Israel “the former things” long ago so they wouldn't say, “Mine idol hath done them” Because Israel is “obstinate” (with a neck of “iron sinew”), אֱלֹהִים uses predictive prophecy to prove His sovereignty.
v. 6-8: New Things:
Explanation: Now, אֱלֹהִים announces “new things”, the fall of Babylon and the return that were “hidden” until now, so that the people cannot claim they already knew of them through their own wisdom.
v. 911: For My Name’s Sake:
Explanation: This is the theological core. אֱלֹהִים admits He restrains His anger not because Israel earned it, but to protect His glory. He has “refined” them, but “not as silver” rather in the “furnace of affliction”,
v. 12-15: The Creator and
the Conqueror:
Explanation: אֱלֹהִים reminds them He is the “First and the Last”. He who summoned the stars also summons Cyrus (the unNamed friend of יְהוָה - the LORD) to perform His pleasure on Babylon.
v. 16: The Divine Commission:
Explanation: A mysterious shift occurs here: “And now אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim hath sent me, and His spirit”. This marks the prophet (or the Servant) being empowered for the message of liberation.
v. 17-19: The “If Only”
Lament. אֱלֹהִים
expresses a Divine yearning:
Explanation: “Oh that thou wouldest hearken to My commandments!” If Israel had obeyed, their peace would have been like a river and their righteousness like the waves of the sea.
v. 20–21: The Exodus
Command:
Explanation: The tone shifts to urgent action: “Go ye forth from Babylon!” They are told to flee the Chaldeans with a voice of singing. אֱלֹהִים promises that just as He cleaved the rock for water in the first Exodus, He will provide for them again.
v. 22: The Final Warning.
Explanation: The chapter ends with a stark contrast: “There is no peace, saith יְהוָה - the LORD, unto the wicked”. Even in a moment of national redemption, individual righteousness remains the requirement for true Shalom.

My Closing Message:
Chapter 48 teaches us that אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s mercy is often a “shield” for His own reputation. He brings us
through the “furnace
of affliction” not to consume us, but to burn away the
“dross” of our reliance on “idols” whether those idols are ancient statues or
modern self-sufficiency. As they left Babylon, the message was: Redemption is a gift, but Peace
is a path.
