Remember the
following truth from our beloved Torah!
“Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה
אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim -
Deuteronomy 4:2.

Introduction to Isaiah 42:
This chapter
introduces the “Servant of יְהוָה - the LORD” It
describes one who will bring justice to the nations with gentleness and
persistence. It is a chapter of transition, moving from the quiet strength of אֱלֹהִים
- Elohim’s (God’s) servant
to a "new song" of praise as אֱלֹהִים
- Elohim marches forth to
deliver His people and turn their darkness into light.
YYYYYYY
Let us now read
Yeshayahu - Isaiah Chapter 42:
(JPS-1917 version of the Tanakh).
1. Behold My servant,
whom I uphold; Mine elect, in whom My soul delighteth; I have put My spirit upon him, he shall make
the right to go forth to the nations.
2. He shall not cry,
nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.
3. A bruised reed shall
he not break, and the dimly burning wick shall he not quench; he shall make the
right to go forth according to the truth.
4. He shall not fail
nor be crushed, till he have set the right in the
earth; and the isles shall wait for his teaching.
5. Thus saith הָאֵל
יְהוָה
- Elohim the LORD, He that created the heavens, and stretched
them forth, He that spread forth the earth and that which cometh out of it, He
that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and
spirit to them that walk therein:
יְהוָה - the
LORD have called thee in righteousness, and have taken hold of thy hand, and
kept thee, and set thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the
nations;
7. To open the blind
eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, and them that sit in darkness
out of the prison-house.
8. I am I יְהוָה - the
LORD, that is My Name; and My glory will I not give to another, neither My praise to graven images
9. Behold, the former
things are come to pass, and new things do I declare; before they spring forth
I tell you of them.
10. Sing unto I יְהוָה - the
LORD a new song, and His praise from the end of the earth; ye that go down to
the sea, and all that is therein, the isles, and the inhabitants thereof.
11. Let the wilderness
and the cities thereof lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar doth inhabit; let the inhabitants of Sela exult, let them shout from
the top of the mountains.
12. Let them give glory
unto I יְהוָה - the
LORD, and declare His praise in the islands.
13. יְהוָה - the
LORD will go forth as a mighty man, He will stir up jealousy like a man of war;
He will cry, yea, He will shout aloud, He will prove Himself mighty against His
enemies.
14. I have long time
held My peace, I have been still, and refrained
Myself; now will I cry like a travailing woman, gasping and panting at once.
15. I will make waste
mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers
islands, and will dry up the pools.
16. And I will bring the
blind by a way that they knew not, in paths that they knew not will I lead
them; I will make darkness light before them, and rugged places plain. These
things will I do, and I will not leave them undone.
17. They shall be turned
back, greatly ashamed, that trust in graven images, that
say unto molten images: ‘Ye are our gods’.
18. Hear, ye deaf, and
look, ye blind, that ye may see.
19. Who is blind, but My servant? Or deaf, as My
messenger that I send? Who is blind as he that is wholehearted, and blind as יְהוָה - the
LORD’s servant?
20. Seeing many things,
thou observest not; opening the ears, he heareth not.
21. יְהוָה - the
LORD was pleased, for His righteousness' sake, to make the teaching great and
glorious.
22. But this is a people
robbed and spoiled, they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in
prison-houses; they are for a prey, and none delivereth,
for a spoil, and none saith: 'Restore.'
23. Who among you will
give ear to this? Who will hearken and hear for the time to come?
24. Who gave Jacob for a
spoil, and Israel to the robbers? Did not יְהוָה - the
LORD? He against whom we have sinned, and in whose ways they would not walk,
neither were they obedient unto His law.
25. Therefore He poured
upon him the fury of His anger, and the strength of
battle; and it set him on fire round about, yet he knew not, and it burned him,
yet he laid it not to heart.

Let us now learn mote from the chapter with ‘verse
by Yeshayahu – verse’
with Explanations:
1. Behold
My servant, whom I uphold; Mine elect, in whom My soul delighteth;
I have put My spirit upon him, he shall make the right to go forth to the
nations.
Explanation: אֱלֹהִים - Elohim introduces His
chosen one. Unlike the earthly conquerors who use
force, this servant is empowered by the Divine Spirit to establish true justice.
2.
He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.
Explanation: His
work is not done through loud self-promotion or worldly clamour, but through
steady, quiet faithfulness.
3.
A bruised reed shall he not break, and the dimly
burning wick shall he not quench; he shall make the right to go forth according
to the truth.
Explanation: A
beautiful image of mercy. He is so gentle that he will not crush those who are
already fragile or extinguish the last spark of hope in a weary soul.
4.
He shall not fail nor be crushed, till he have set the
right in the earth; and the isles shall wait for his law.
Explanation: Though
he is gentle with others, he possesses an internal strength that cannot be
broken until his mission is complete.
5.
Thus saith יְהוָה - the LORD, He that created the heavens, and
stretched them forth, He that spread abroad the earth and that which cometh out
of it, He that giveth breath unto the people upon it,
and spirit to them that walk therein:
6. I
יְהוָה - the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and have taken hold of thy hand, and kept thee, and set thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the nations;Explanation: The
servant is not just a teacher, but a “covenant” in human form, meant to bring
light to the entire world.
7.
To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners
from the dungeon, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison-house.
Explanation: This
refers to both physical and spiritual liberation. אֱלֹהִים intends to remove the scales from
eyes that cannot see His truth.
8.
I am יְהוָה - the LORD, that is My Name; and My glory will I not give to
another, neither My praise to graven images.
Explanation: אֱלֹהִים asserts His unique identity. The
idols of the nations are hollow; only the Eternal One deserves worship.
9.
Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare; before
they spring forth I tell you of them.
Explanation: אֱלֹהִים proves His Divinity by predicting
the future. Because His past prophecies came true, the “new things” He promises
now are certain.
10.
Sing unto יְהוָה -
the LORD a new song, and His praise from the end of the earth; ye that go down
to the sea, and all that is therein, the isles, and the inhabitants thereof.
Explanation: A
call for universal worship. Even the furthest corners of the earth should celebrate
the coming redemption.
11.
Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up their voice, the villages
that Kedar doth inhabit; let the inhabitants of Sela exult, let them shout from the top of the mountains.
12. Let them give glory unto יְהוָה - the
LORD, and declare His praise in the islands.
Explanation: From the
desert to the mountains, every landscape is invited to join the chorus of
praise.
13.
יְהוָה - the LORD will go forth as a mighty man, He will stir up jealousy
like a man of war; He will cry, yea, He will shout aloud; He will prove Himself
mighty against His enemies.
Explanation: The
tone shifts. The gentle אֱלֹהִים of the “bruised reed” now becomes a
Warrior to defend His people.
14.
I have long time held My peace, I have been still, and refrained Myself; now
will I cry like a travailing woman, gasping and panting at once.
Explanation: אֱלֹהִים - Elohim describes His
“silence” during the exile as a period of restraint that has now ended. His
intervention will be sudden and powerful.
15.
I will make waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will
make the rivers islands, and will dry up the pools.
Explanation: אֱלֹהִים will remove every obstacle, natural
or political that stands in the way of Israel's return.
16.
And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew
not, in paths that they knew not will I lead them; I will make darkness light
before them, and crooked places straight. These things will I do, and I will
not forsake them.
Explanation: For
those who feel lost, אֱלֹהִים promises to be a guide, turning the
confusing “crooked” paths of life into a straight road home.
17.
They shall be turned back, they shall be utterly ashamed, that trust in graven images,
that say to molten images: ‘Ye are our gods’.
18. Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may
see.
Explanation: A
call to those who have ignored אֱלֹהִים - Elohim to finally pay
attention to the wonders He is performing.
19.
Who is blind, but My servant? or deaf, as My
messenger that I send? who is blind as he that is at
peace with Me, and blind as יְהוָה - the LORD’s servant?
20. Seeing many things, thou observest not;
opening the ears, he heareth not.
Explanation: A
sorrowful rebuke. Israel was meant to be the messenger, yet they often closed
their eyes to אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s direct guidance.
21.
It pleased יְהוָה - the LORD, for His righteousness’ sake, to make the teaching great
and glorious.
Explanation: אֱלֹהִים gave the Torah (the
teaching) to magnify His righteousness and give Israel a glorious path to
follow.
22.
But this is a people robbed and spoiled, they are all
of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison-houses; they are for a
prey, and none delivereth; for a spoil, and none
saith: ‘Restore.’
Explanation: The
current state of the exiles is depicted as being trapped and forgotten by the
world, but not by אֱלֹהִים.
23.
Who among you will give ear to this? who will hearken
and hear for the time to come?
24. Who gave Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the
robbers? did not יְהוָה - the LORD? He against whom we have sinned, and in whose ways they
would not walk, neither were they obedient unto His
law.
Explanation: Isaiah
explains that their suffering was not an accident of history, but a Divine
discipline because they strayed from the Path.
25.
Therefore He poured upon him the fury of His anger, and the strength of battle;
and it set him on fire round about, yet he knew not; and it burned him, yet he
laid it not to heart.
Explanation: Even
under judgment, the people were sometimes slow to realize the spiritual cause
of their troubles.

My Closing Message:
Chapter 42 reminds us that even when we feel
like a “bruised reed” or a “dimly burning wick”, the Almighty does not discard
us. He is a אֱלֹהִים who leads the blind by
paths they have not known. Though the fire of trial may burn, His ultimate goal
is to “make the teaching great and glorious” and bring His children back to the
light.
