Remember the
following truth from our beloved Torah!
“Ye shall NOT ADD TO
THE WORD which I command you,
NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT,
that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה
אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem,
which I command you”. Davarim -
Deuteronomy 4:2.
However, sadly both the later priests as well as our rabbis of long ago and of today have, and are shamefully disobeying this command of אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim, בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם קָדוֹשׁוֹ - ‘Baruch Shem Kadosho’ – ‘Blessed be His Holy Name!’

In our Hebrew tradition, the concept of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim as the “אֱלֹהִים of the present who hears you” is fundamentally rooted in the Divine Name as was revealed unto Moshe - Moses at the burning bush at Mount Horeb, and the active personal nature of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim. This perspective emphasizes that אֱלֹהִים is not just a historical deity but an ‘immediate’, ‘active’ ‘presence’ in the ‘now’. He is the “אֱלֹהִים - Elohim of the Present” (Ehyeh/YHVH).
I AM Present: In Exodus 3:14, אֱלֹהִים identifies Himself to Moshe as “Ehyeh asher
Ehyeh” or
“I Am Who I Am” or “I Will Be What I Will Be”. This
Name is interpreted by scholars and rabbis as a declaration that אֱלֹהִים - Elohim is the “Ever Present One”, present in ‘the past’, ‘future’, and most
importantly, ‘in every current moment of suffering or joy’.
Active in the ‘Now’: our
faith teaches us that the Torah and its commandments (mitzvot) are to be accepted today and forever, meaning that
אֱלֹהִים - Elohim is continuously commanding and interacting with
humanity in the present.
“אֱלֹהִים is ONE”. The central Hebrew prayer is the “Shema Yisroel”, which declares that אֱלֹהִים - Elohim is ONE, emphasizing that the same אֱלֹהִים who created the world is ‘actively’ ‘sustaining it ‘and is present and with us right now!
The אֱלֹהִים Who Hears (“Shema Yisroel”):
The Listening אֱלֹהִים: The
Hebrew verb shema (to hear) is central to Hebrew prayer. אֱלֹהִים is
portrayed as one who listens to the ‘cries’, ‘prayers’, and even the ‘unvoiced groanings’ of the heart.
אֱלֹהִים is always Near: The Torah states, “For what great nation is there that has a אֱלֹהִים so near to it as יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ - the LORD our Elohim is to us, whenever we call on him?” (Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:7).
Responding to Affliction: A, prime example is the naming of ‘Ishmael’, which means “God hears," after God listened to Hagar's affliction (Genesis 16:11).
Yom Kippur and Tears: In the closing prayer of Yom Kippur (Neilah), אֱלֹהִים (God) is addressed as one who “hears the sound of weeping” and He treasures prayers.
The Shekhinah (Divine Presence:
While אֱלֹהִים is
transcendent (beyond time and space), Hebrew theology also emphasizes the “Shekhinah”, which is the Divine presence that dwells within the
world and among our Hebrew people.
Our connection to Him, for אֱלֹהִים is ‘personal’ and ‘accessible’, ‘acting as a parent’ who ‘listens to each individual, allowing for a direct, "no middleman" relationship. In essence, our Hebrew faith holds that, because אֱלֹהִים is the “Ever-Present One” (YHVH), He is actively present in your current situation, even in times of difficulty, יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים - the LORD Elohim intimately hears our prayers, בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם קָדוֹשׁוֹ - ‘Baruch Shem Kadosho’ - ‘Blessed be His Holy Name’!
