Colour coded details of our beloved TaNaKh:

1. Torah = History & Law, 2. Nevi’im = The Prophets. 3. *Ketuvim = all other Writings.

*The Ketuvim - Includes, Poetical books - Psalms, Proverbs, Job, the Megillot, or Scrolls - Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations of Jeremiah, Ecclesiastes, and Esther, prophecy of Daniel, and history of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Chronicles I & II.

Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

“Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of אֱלֹהֵיכֶם יְהוָה - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

“From Exodus to Zion”

Or ‘The Cloud and the Fire’..

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

The primary connection between Isaiah 4:5 and Exodus chapters 14 & 15 is the motif of a “New Exodus”. In these passages, the prophet Isaiah intentionally evokes the iconic imagery of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s ‘physical protection over Israel’ during their deliverance from Egypt, specifically the ‘miraculous pillar of cloud by day’ and ‘fire by night’ and projects it as a promise for the ultimate restoration and preservation of Mount Zion.

Where ‘Exodus’ records historical deliverance through the desert and the Sea, and ‘Isaiah’ envisions a ‘Divine’, permanent canopy (chuppah) of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s presence’ and ‘glory overshadowing His gathered people’.

Let us now read Isaiah chapter 4, verse 5: All verses in this study are from JPS-1917 Version of the Tanakh.

“And יְהוָה - the LORD will create over the whole habitation of mount Zion, and over her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night; for over all the glory shall be a canopy”.

YYYYYYY

1. The Divine Symbols: ‘Cloud’, ‘Smoke’, and ‘Flaming Fire’:

During the Exodus at the Red Sea, אֱלֹהִים - Elohim placed a tangible barrier between His people and their pursuers using a miraculous pillar.

Exodus 14:19-20:

“And the angel of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, who went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud removed from before them, and stood behind them; and it came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel; and there was the cloud and the darkness here, yet gave it light by night there; and the one came not near the other all the night”.

Then in Isaiah 4:5, Isaiah picks up this exact imagery to describe אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s future, protective dwelling over Jerusalem:

Isaiah 4:5:

“And יְהוָה - the LORD will create over the whole habitation of mount Zion, and over her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night; for over all the glory shall be a canopy”.

By reusing the terms ‘cloud’, ‘smoke’, and ‘flaming fire’, Isaiah reassures Israel that the same אֱלֹהִים - Elohim who protected them at the Red Sea will once again actively guard and shelter them!

2. From Temporary Wilderness Defense to Eternal Sanctuary:

In Exodus 15, after crossing the Red Sea, Moses and Israel sing of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim bringing His redeemed people to His sacred abode:

Exodus 15:17:

“Thou bringest them in, and plantest them in the mountain of Thine inheritance, the place, O יְהוָה - LORD, which Thou hast made for Thee to dwell in, the sanctuary, O יְהוָה - LORD, which Thy hands have established”.

Isaiah 4:5 draws a direct line from Exodus 15:17. The mobile tabernacle and wilderness guidance are now applied permanently to “the whole habitation of mount Zion, and over her assemblies”. The protection is no longer just for a travelling caravan, but forms an abiding canopy (defence/covering) over the entire holy community.

3. Summary Comparison Table:

Theme.

Exodus 14-15 & 17.

Isaiah 4:5.

Manifestation:

Pillar of cloud by day, fire by night.

Cloud and smoke by day, shining flaming fire by night.

Purpose:

Sheltering Israel from Egyptians; guiding the way.

A canopy/covering over the glory of Zion's assemblies.

Location:

The Wilderness / The Red Sea Crossing.

Mount Zion / Jerusalem.

Context:

First Exodus out of Egypt.

Prophetic “New Exodus” and Divine restoration.

My Closing Message:

The striking parallel between Isaiah 4:5 and Exodus Chapters 14 & 15, demonstrates the consistency of Divine covenant protection across Scripture. What began as a miraculous emergency refuge during Israel’s escape from bondage is promised in Isaiah to become a permanent reality of ‘peace’, ‘shade’, and ‘glory over all who assemble under אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s kingdom’. It serves as a reminder that the power displayed in past redemption guarantees future security for the truly faithful! Blessed be יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ - the LORD our Eloheinu!
