Remember the following truth
from our beloved Torah!
“Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE
DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה
אֱלֹהֵיכֶם -
the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2.
However, sadly both the later priests as well as our rabbis of long ago have shamefully disobeyed this command of אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim, בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם קָדוֹשׁוֹ - ‘Baruch Shem Kadosho’ – ‘Blessed be His Holy Name!’

Foreword:
This passage from Ezekiel is one of the most profound in the Prophetic books, often referred to as the “New Heart” prophecy. It speaks of a spiritual and national transformation that is initiated entirely by אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God).
Introduction to Ezekiel 36:22-28:
In this chapter, the Prophet Ezekiel addresses
the House of Israel during their exile in Babylon. The people are broken and the
Land is desolate. However, אֱלֹהִים -
Elohim announces a dramatic
shift. This is not a message of what man must do for אֱלֹהִים -
Elohim, but what אֱלֹהִים intends to do for His own
Name’s sake. It describes a process of physical return to the Land followed by
a deep, internal spiritual washing, a renewal of the very “internal organs” of
faith.
Let us read Ezekiel Chapter 36:22-28: (JPS-1917 version of the Tanakh).
22. “Therefore say unto the house of Israel: Thus saith אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim: I do not this for your sake, O house of Israel, but for My Holy Name, which ye have profaned among the nations, whither ye came.
23. And I will sanctify My great Name, which hath been profaned among the nations, which ye have profaned in the midst of them; and the nations shall know that I am יְהוָה - the LORD, saith אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes.
24. For I will take you from among the nations, and gather you out of all the countries, and will bring you into your own land.
25. And I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean; from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.
26. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.
27. And I will put My spirit within you, and cause you to walk in My statutes, and ye shall keep Mine ordinances, and do them.
28. And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your
fathers; and ye shall be My people, and I will be your
אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה”.

Let us turn to the ‘verse by verse’ complete with Explanations:
22. “Therefore say unto the
house of Israel: Thus saith אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim:
I do not this for your sake, O house of Israel, but for My Holy Name, which ye
have profaned among the nations, whither ye came”.
Explanation: אֱלֹהִים -
Elohim clarifies the motive
for the coming redemption. It is not because Israel has “earned” it through
perfect merit, but to restore the reputation of the Divine Name (Kiddush יְהוָה). When Israel was in exile, the nations
mocked אֱלֹהִים; by bringing them back,
אֱלֹהִים proves His sovereignty
and faithfulness to the world.
23. “And I will sanctify My
great name, which hath been profaned among the nations, which ye have profaned
in the midst of them; and the nations shall know that I am יְהוָה - the LORD, saith
אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim,
when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes”.
Explanation: The “sanctification” of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s Name happens through the visible restoration of His people. The world will watch the transformation of Israel and realize that the אֱלֹהִים of Israel is the true Master of history.
24. “For I will take you
from among the nations, and gather you out of all the countries, and will bring
you into your own land”.
Explanation: This is the physical restoration. Before the spiritual renewal can happen, the “body” of the nation must be gathered from the four corners of the earth and placed back upon its ancestral soil.
25. “And I will sprinkle
clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean; from all your uncleannesses,
and from all your idols, will I cleanse you”.
Explanation: This imagery invokes the laws of ritual purity. אֱלֹהִים acts as the High Priest, sprinkling “clean water” to remove the spiritual defilement caused by idolatry. It is a promise of a “moral bath” that washes away the stains of the past.
26. “A new heart also will I
give you, and a new spirit will I put within you; and I will take away the
stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh”.
Explanation: This is the core of the prophecy. A "stony heart" is one that is cold, stubborn, and unresponsive to אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s word. A “heart of flesh” is soft, living, and sensitive. אֱלֹהִים promises to perform “spiritual surgery”, replacing the dead, stubborn will with a living, responsive desire to do good.
27. “And I will put My spirit within you, and cause you to walk in My statutes,
and ye shall keep Mine ordinances, and do them”.
Explanation: In the past, keeping the Law felt like an external burden. Here, אֱלֹהִים - Elohim promises that by putting His Spirit inside the person, obedience will become a natural, internal drive. He provides both the “map” (the statutes) and the “engine” (His Spirit) to walk the path.
28. “And ye shall dwell in
the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be My
people, and I will be your אֱלֹהִים - Elohim”.
Explanation: This verse reaffirms the eternal Covenant. The goal of all the cleansing and heart-changing is the restoration of the relationship. It concludes with the formula of the Covenant: the people belong to אֱלֹהִים, and אֱלֹהִים belongs to the people, living together in the Land promised to the Patriarchs.
My Concluding Message:
This passage is one of ultimate hope. It tells us that even when we feel our hearts have become “stony” due to the trials of life, age, or illness, אֱלֹהִים - Elohim is in the business of renewal. He does not ask us to fix our own hearts; He promises to give us a new one. You may find comfort in verse 26, that stated the “Spirit of אֱלֹהִים is within you, providing strength even when the flesh is weak. May the “Clean Water” of these words refresh you today!
