Re Tanakh versions:

Throughout this site I may use any of three versions of the Tanakh: 1. “Jewish Publication Society” (JPS-1917), 2. “Mechon-Mamre.org” (MEC), and 3. “Sefaria.org” (SEF), three brilliant versions, However, the JPS-1917 is my preferred version!

Colour coded details of our beloved TaNaKh:

1. Torah = History & Law, 2. Nevi’im = The Prophets. 3. *Ketuvim = all other Writings.

*The Ketuvim - Includes, Poetical books - Psalms, Proverbs, Job, the Megillot, or Scrolls - Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations of Jeremiah, Ecclesiastes, and Esther, prophecy of Daniel, and history of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Chronicles I & II.

Please Note: Some alterations or (additions) have been made relating to ‘Names’ and ‘Attributes’ of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God), having been corrected like it once was pre the “Masoretic Text”.

Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

“Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of אֱלֹהֵיכֶם יְהוָה - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

אֵל עוֹלָם

“El Olam”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Please Note: All verses are from the JPS-1917 version of the Tanakh).

Greetings, I am well aware that this is a relatively short study, but it does carry such wonderful teaching. Over time I have asked a good number of Hebrews if they knew what this amazing title means, and I found just two who knew it and a good number who had no idea. Sadly their Ivrit was obviously not up to scratch!

The title “El Olam” - אֵל עוֹלָם in the Tanakh translates to “Everlasting אֱלֹהִים - Elohim”, underscoring the ‘eternal’ and ‘unchanging nature’ of the Divine presence. Rooted in Hebrew etymology, “El” of course means “אֱלֹהִים”, while “Olam” suggests ‘perpetuity’.

References are as follows: 1. Genesis 21:33, where Avraham invokes the title אֵל עוֹלָם - “El Olam”:

וַיִּטַּע אֶשֶׁל, בִּבְאֵר שָׁבַע; וַיִּקְרָא-שָׁם-בְּשֵׁם יְהוָה, אֵל עוֹלָם

“And Abraham planted a tamarisk-tree in Beersheba, and called there on the name of יְהוָה - the LORD, אֵל עוֹלָם - the Everlasting אֱלֹהִים”.

2. Isaiah 40:28, This verse has a somewhat extend “El” and it has אֱלֹהֵי עוֹלָם which highlights אֱלֹהִים’s infinite nature.

הֲלוֹא יָדַעְתָּ אִם-לֹא שָׁמַעְתָּ, אֱלֹהֵי עוֹלָם יְהוָה בּוֹרֵא קְצוֹת הָאָרֶץ

“Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard that the everlasting אֱלֹהִים -אֱלֹהֵי עוֹלָם, יְהוָה - the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth”.
