Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of אֱלֹהֵיכֶם יְהוָה - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

“Davarim Truths”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Below are three remarkable scriptures from Devarim - Deuteronomy chapters 4, 5 and 28, and each powerfully tells us not to make ‘any changes to His blessed Word!’ However, did our so-called sages listen and obey?

“Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish from it, that ye may keep the commandments of אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD your Elohim which I command you” Devarim - Deuteronomy 4:2 (JPS-1917 version of the Torah).

“Ye shall observe to do therefore as אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD your Elohim hath commanded you; ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. Ye shall walk in all the way which אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD your Elohim hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you,” Devarim - Deuteronomy 5:28-29 (JPS).

“ … thou shalt hearken unto the Commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ - the LORD thy Eloheicha, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them; and shalt not turn aside from any of the Words which I Command you this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them” Davarim - Deuteronomy 28: 14b-15 (JPS).

These remarkable passages are regarding Moses’ solemn charge to preserve the integrity of אֱלֹהִים – Elohim’s (אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s) revelation and to walk unwaveringly in ‘covenant obedience’; and it forbids the altering אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s commands in any shape or form, and it insist on single‑minded fidelity so that life and blessings can follow.

Guide and key considerations:

Context: Moses’ farewell addresses to Israel as they prepare to enter Canaan; and warnings follow re historical examples of failure.

Core command: “Do not add to, or subtract from אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s Word; do not deviate ‘to the right hand or to the left’”.

Exegetical commentary:

Literal sense and immediate context:

Deuteronomy 4:2 frames the injunction: You shall not add … neither shall ye diminish, a charge to accept the Law as given and to obey it intact. Moses speaks after recounting Israel’s failures (e.g., Baal‑Peor) and before rehearsing the covenant stipulations; the prohibition is meant to secure communal fidelity and prevent the syncretism that led to past judgment.

The “right hand or left” motif:

Verses 5:28-29 and 28:14-15 repeat the same moral posture: ‘do not turn aside. The image of not turning ‘right or left’ emphasizes ‘single‑track obedience’ - not merely a formal compliance but a steady life‑course in the ways commanded, because Israel’s survival and flourishing depends on ‘covenant faithfulness’. The promise “that ye may live, and that it may be well with you” ties obedience to communal and personal well‑being!

Theological implications:

Authority of revelation: The text asserts the sufficiency and authority of the Mosaic instruction; altering it is tantamount to rejecting אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s wisdom. This principle recurs in later our Scriptural warnings ‘against adding or subtracting from divine revelation’.

Covenant fidelity over innovation: The prohibition targets syncretism and unauthorized religious innovation that would dilute the covenant’s distinctiveness. Moses’ historical reminders show the practical stakes: disobedience brought death and national disaster.

Application and cautions:

Textual integrity: Preserve the core commands and resist theological shortcuts that dilute moral demands.

Avoiding legalism: The command to keep the word intact is not an invitation to sterile literalism; faithful interpretation must still read the law’s purpose (life, justice, holiness) into concrete situations. This is a pastoral and hermeneutical balance: fidelity without alterations.

My Closing reflection:

Moses’ repeated injunctions that are pastoral and covenantal: they protect Israel’s identity and welfare by insisting that אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s Word must never be tampered with, nor treated casually. The repeated formula, ‘do not add, do not turn aside’ is both a legal safeguard and a moral summons to steady, ‘life‑giving obedience’.

However, during the so-called time of the ‘sages’ the complete opposite occurred, as they not only added that fake so-called ‘Oral Law’, but they tampered with our blessed Scriptures. How can I prove that, very simple, just look at Psalms 53. Here they disgracefully removed Elohim’s Sacred Name of יְהוָה – the LORD and replaced it with אֱלֹהִים in the Hebrew section and Elohim in the translation. They did this seven times in this chapter. They did this in other chapters of our Tanakh as well. Rabbis, who were so involved with that mystical and evil occult Kabbalah made countless changes to our blessed faith, etc.

The three parts of Davarim - Deuteronomy shown above obviously meant nothing to these rabbis and even today they do not care, having changed the sacred word of Elohim, be it by Him, prophets or other sanctified individuals!
