Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command youNEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

 “Anatomy of Trumpets

Numbers 29: verses 1 to 6:.

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

Chapter 29 begins the transition, praise  אֱלֹהִים- Elohim (God) into the sacred seventh month of the Hebrew calendar (Tishri), the most spiritually dense month of the year. While Chapter 28 detailed daily, weekly, monthly, and spring festival offerings, Chapter 29 shifts to the autumn festivals. Verses 1-6 specifically address the Feast of Trumpets (Yom Teruah), a day of rest and “holy convocation” that served as a spiritual wake-up call. This feast did not stand alone; it functioned as the herald for the even more solemn “Day of Atonement” (which is covered in the next study, covering the joyful “Feast of Tabernacles”, etc.

For interest; the next study regarding this remarkable is chapter (29:7-11) is called “Anatomy-of-Atonement. The link is at the end of this study.

Commentory of verses 1 to 6:

Verse 1: The Call of the Trumpet

“And in the seventh month, on the first day...”: The seventh month was the sabbatical month, marking the beginning of the civil New Year (Rosh Hashanah).

“A holy convocation; you shall do no customary work”: Like a Sabbath, this day required a complete cessation of regular business to focus entirely on אֱלֹהִים - Elohim.

“A day of blowing the trumpets”: The Hebrew term teruah implies a “loud noise” or “shout”. The blowing of the shofar (ram's horn) was a reminder of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s sovereignty and a call to repentance and self-examination.

Verses 2-5: The Specific Offerings

The offerings for this day were precise and mandatory, following the standard pattern for a holy festival:

The Burnt Offerings (v. 2): One young bull, one ram, and seven male lambs. These represented total surrender and dedication to אֱלֹהִים.

The Grain Offerings (v. 3-4): Fine flour mixed with oil, measured specifically for each animal (3/10 for the bull, 2/10 for the ram, 1/10 for each lamb). This acknowledged אֱלֹהִים as the provider of the harvest.

The Sin Offering (v. 5): One male goat to “make atonement”. Even on a day of “shouting” and celebration, the reality of sin required a blood sacrifice to maintain a right relationship with אֱלֹהִים

Verse 6: Layers of Worship:

“Besides the burnt offering of the New Moon...”: This is a critical detail. Because the Feast of Trumpets fell on the first day of the month, it coincided with the regular New Moon festival.

Cumulative Devotion: The sacrifices of the Feast of Trumpets did not replace the existing requirements. On this day, the priests offered:

1. The Daily morning and evening lambs.

2. The Monthly New Moon sacrifices.

The Special Feast of Trumpets sacrifices.

3. The “Sweet Aroma”: This repetition emphasized that worship should be exact and constant. אֱלֹהִים - Elohim is never “wearied” by the faithful repetition of sincere devotion.

Regarding the next study on this subject:

While verses 7 to 11 are about the obvious Feasts to follow, including the Day of Atonement of course. However it speaks on afflicting the soul and in deep humility. Whilst verses 1 to 6  focused on the alertness and acclamation needed to reach that state. The trumpet blast of verse 1 is the “alarm” that prepared the heart for the “cleansing” which we studied in the subsequent verses.
