“Zechariah Chapter 2”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:
Zechariah Chapter 2 marks a transition from the heavy symbolic visions of the first chapter into a vibrant, expansive promise of restoration. While Haggai focused on the physical structure of the Temple, Zechariah focuses on the spiritual and demographic expansion of the city itself. This chapter addresses a small, vulnerable community living in a ruined capital and offers them a vision of a Jerusalem that will outgrow its walls. It redefines security, moving from physical fortifications to the concept of
אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s (God’s) protection, and invites the scattered people to return to a home that is no longer a fortress, but a global centre of light!

Let us commence and read Zechariah Chapter 2, verses 1 to 17: (JPS-1917 version of the Torah). Below the chapter I will provide a commentary of what you will have read in this chapter.

1. “And I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and behold four horns. 2. And I said unto the angel that spoke with me: ‘What are these?’ And he said unto me: ‘These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem’. 3. And יְהוָה - the LORD showed me four craftsmen. 4. Then said I: ‘What come these to do?’ And he spoke, saying: ‘These, the horns which scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head, these then are come to frighten them, to cast down the horns of the nations, which lifted up their horn against the land of Judah to scatter it’. 5. And I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and behold a man with a measuring line in his hand. 6. Then said I: ‘Whither goest thou?’ And he said unto me: ‘To measure Jerusalem, to see what is the breadth thereof, and what is the length thereof’. 7. And, behold, the angel that spoke with me went forth, and another angel went out to meet him, 8. and said unto him: ‘Run, speak to this young man, saying: ‘Jerusalem shall be inhabited without walls for the multitude of men and cattle therein’. 9. For I, saith יְהוָה - the LORD, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and I will be the glory in the midst of her. 10. ‘Ho, ho, flee then from the land of the north’, saith יְהוָה - the LORD; ‘for I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heaven’, saith יְהוָה - the LORD. 11. Ho, Zion, escape, thou that dwellest with the daughter of Babylon’. 12. For thus saith צְבָאוֹת אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim Tz’va’ot (of Hosts) who sent me after glory unto the nations which spoiled you: ‘Surely, he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye. 13. For, behold, I will shake My hand over them, and they shall be a spoil to those that served them’; and ye shall know that צְבָאוֹת אֱלֹהִים-יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim Tz’va’ot hath sent me. 14. ‘Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion; for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith יְהוָה - the LORD. 15. And many nations shall join themselves to יְהוָה - the LORD in that day, and shall be My people, and I will dwell in the midst of thee’; and thou shalt know that צְבָאוֹת אֱלֹהִים-יְהוָה the LORD Elohim Tz’va’ot hath sent me unto thee. 16. And יְהוָה - the LORD shall inherit Judah as His portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again. 17. Be silent, all flesh, before יְהוָה - the LORD; for He is aroused out of His holy habitation’”.

My special Commentary on Zechariah Chapter 2:
The chapter begins with the vision of a man with a measuring line, a common prophetic symbol for the act of reclamation and building. However, a second messenger interrupts this work with a startling command: “Jerusalem shall be inhabited as villages without walls”. This is a radical shift in ancient urban thought. In a world where walls were the only source of safety, the Almighty declares that the city’s growth will be so explosive that stone boundaries would only hinder it. The lack of walls is not a sign of weakness, but a testament to a peace so profound that physical barriers become obsolete.

The promise of security is then internalised and externalised simultaneously: “For I, saith יְהוָה - the LORD, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and I will be the glory in the midst of her”. This imagery suggests that the Divine Presence is both a protective perimeter and a central radiance. It assures the returning exiles that their safety is not contingent on their military strength or their masonry, but on their alignment with the Holy One. The “wall of fire” recalls the protective pillar of fire from the Exodus, signalling that the same Power that birthed the nation is now guarding its rebirth.

The narrative then turns into a stirring call to those still in “the land of the north”, Babylon. They are urged to flee and deliver themselves. The description of Israel as “the apple of His eye” is one of the most tender metaphors in the Prophetic books. It implies that any harm directed at the nation is felt by the Almighty as a direct, sensitive injury to Himself. This section serves as a warning to the nations that plundered Israel; the scales of justice are being recalibrated, and the former oppressors will become the “spoil” of those they once enslaved.

The chapter concludes with a universalistic expansion of the Covenant. The command to “sing and rejoice” is not just for the physical descendants of Jacob, but for a future where “many nations shall join themselves to יְהוָה - the LORD”. This is a crucial element of Zechariah’s theology: the restoration of Zion is not an end in itself, but a catalyst for a global recognition of ethical monotheism. The “Holy Land” is reaffirmed as the Divine inheritance, and the chapter ends with a call for “all flesh” to be silent before the Almighty, acknowledging that the Divine plan is now in motion from its Holy habitation!

My Closing Message:
Zechariah 2 challenges us to expand our vision of what is possible. It reminds us that we often try to “measure” our future based on the ruins of our past, yet the Divine plan often exceeds the boundaries of our imagination. The message is clear: true security is found not in the walls we build to keep others out, but in the Presence we cultivate within. As we reflect on this vision, and we may find the courage to inhabit our own lives “without walls”, trusting in the protective fire of our values and the light of our purpose.
