Re Tanakh versions:

Throughout this site I may use any of the following three versions of the Tanakh: 1. “Jewish Publication Society” (JPS-1917), 2Mechon-Mamre.org (MEC), and 3. “Sefaria.org (SEF), three brilliant versions, although JPS-1917 is my preferred version!

Colour coded details of our beloved TaNaKh:

1. Torah = History & Law, 2. Nevi’im = The Prophets. 3. *Ketuvim = all other Writings.

*The Ketuvim - Includes, Poetical books - Psalms, Proverbs, Job, the Megillot, or Scrolls - Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations of Jeremiah, Ecclesiastes, and Esther, prophecy of Daniel, and history of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Chronicles I & II.

Please Note: Some alterations or (additions) have been made relating to ‘Names’ and ‘Attributes’ of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, having been corrected like it once was pre the “Masoretic Text”.

Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command youNEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

Introduction:

The verses above present Divine instruction as immediate, life preserving guidance: commandments and teaching illuminate the next step, loving correction restores life, and wisdom must be treasured and guarded like the pupil of the eye ‘practical’, ‘internalized’, and ‘protected’.

Study overview:

Text and immediate sense:

Proverbs 6:23:For the commandment is a ‘lamp’, and ‘the teaching is light’, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life”.

Explanation: Commands = ‘lamp’ (guides the next step); teaching = ‘light’ (clarifies); reproof = ‘life’ giving correction.

Proverbs 7:1-2:My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee. Keep my commandments and live, and my teaching as the apple of thine eye”.

Explanation: Treasure and guard instruction as you would your most vital sense.

Quick comparison (metaphors):

Image

Meaning

Practical cue

Lamp:

Immediate guidance for the next step.

Short maxims for decisions.

Light:

Ongoing clarity and understanding.

Regular study, reflection.

Apple of the eye.

Treasured, instinctively guarded.

Constant vigilance; protective habits.

Commentary on the key points:

Lamp vs. map: A lamp shows the next step, not the whole road, but wisdom helps in the moment, not by predicting every outcome.

Reproof as care: Correction is framed positively, it redirects toward flourishing rather than merely punishing.

Guarding the teaching: The “apple of the eye” image calls for affectionate protection and habitual internalization.

Practical, tactile study plan: Short memorization phrases (why not the following aloud):

“Lamp for the next step”.

“Light for the path”.

“Guard the teaching”.

Ask yourself: When did a correction save me? When do I need a ‘lamp’? What do I guard like my eye?

Study questions to ponder:

Which of the three images (‘lamp’, ‘light’, ‘apple of the eye’) speaks most urgently to you right now?

How can reproof be offered so it heals rather than shame?

Which one Mitzvoth - Commandment will you take to heart this week?.

I pray that this rather unusual study has been of assistance to your spiritual life!
