Remember the following two truth’s from our beloved Scriptures!

Tehillim - Psalm 24

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Tehillim - Psalm 24 is a Royal hymn celebrating אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s (God’s) universal sovereignty and the purity required to enter His presence; below I will provide the JPS-1917 version text, then a concise introduction, with a ‘word for word’ look at this Psalm looking as ‘key terms’, ‘thematic highlights’, followed by a brief ‘closing reflection’.

Introduction:

Psalm 24 is attributed to Dovid - David and functions as both a cosmic hymn with אֱלֹהִים – Elohim as ‘Creator’, ‘Owner’, and a liturgical procession text (the “King of glory” motif). It pairs creation theology with an ethical demand: the earth belongs to אֱלֹהִים, and those who would ascend His Holy mount must be morally and ritually fit!

Psalm 24 of David:

1. The earth is יְהוָה - the LORD’s, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

2. For He hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.

3. Who shall ascend into the mountain of יְהוָה -the LORD, and who shall stand in His Holy place?

4. He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not taken My name in vain, and hath not sworn deceitfully.

5. He shall receive a blessing from יְהוָה - the LORD, and righteousness from the אֱלֹהִים - Elohim of his salvation.

6. Such is the generation of them that seek after Him, that seek Thy face, even Jacob. Selah.

7. Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lifted up, ye everlasting doors; that the King of glory may come in.

8. ‘Who is the King of glory?’ - ‘יְהוָה - the LORD strong and mighty, יְהוָה mighty in battle’.

9. Lift up your heads, O ye gates, yea, lift them up, ye everlasting doors; that the King of glory may come in.

10. ‘Who then is the מֶלֶךְ הַכָּבוֹד - King of glory?’ - ‘יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת - the LORD of hosts; He is מֶלֶךְ הַכָּבוֹד - the King of glory’. Selah”.

Let us look at a brief ‘Word for Word’ section: (key Hebrew terms and make sense).

1. The earth is יְהוָה - the LORD as owner/sovereign of creation.

2. Founded it upon the seas אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s creative power over chaotic waters.

3. Ascend into the mountain of יְהוָה - the LORD, approach to sacred space (Temple imagery).

4. Clean hands / pure heart, external conduct and inner integrity both required.

5. Seek Thy face, an active pursuit of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s presence (not mere ritual).

6. King of glory, royal theophany; - אֱלֹהִים as victorious sovereign.

Themes and points to understand:

Divine ownership of creation, אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s claim on the world grounds ethical responsibility.

Moral prerequisites for worship, ritual access is inseparable from ethical purity.

Liturgical procession motif, gates and doors imagery evokes Temple entry and royal enthronement.

Theophany and kingship, repeated question/answer builds communal acclamation of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s might.

Conclusion:

Tehillim - Psalm 24 unites ‘cosmology and ethics’: because אֱלֹהִים is Lord of all, human life must reflect that Lordship in conduct and devotion. The repeated acclamation, “Who is the King of glory?”, invites the community to recognize אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim’s sovereignty, and to prepare themselves inwardly and outwardly to welcome Him!

Closing meditation:

May our hands be clean and our hearts pure so that, in seeking אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s face, we may truly welcome the King of Glory!
