Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

 “Parashat Vayikra”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Welcome to, D’var Torah: Parasha Vayikra:

In this Parashah we bear witness to Moshe Rabbeinu’s amazing humility when he received the words of the Torah from אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God), yet we know that in his capacity as a leader, he displayed no such reticence. To regard this comparative confidence as arrogance however, is to misconstrue the very concept of humility.

Vayikra is both the first word of the ‘Parasha’, and taken from the third book of our beloved Torah. Intriguingly, the concluding letter of Vayikra is a small ‘Alef’ - א. According to our tradition, when Moshe was on Mount *Horeb heard the words of the Torah from יְהוָה - the LORD, and יְהוָה - the LORD told him the words ‘Vayikra el Moshe’, indicating that אֱלֹהִים - Elohim had called out to Moshe. Moshe in his humility did not want to write that down.

And so he wrote a small א, because without the א, the words read Vayikar el Moshe’, meaning אֱלֹהִים - Elohim just happened to bump into Moshe. This is one of the many passages in the Torah through which we recognise the deep humility of Moshe Rabbeinu. Indeed, the Torah itself says ‘Moshe anav oomicol Adam’, Moshe was more humble than any other person then, and throughout all time.

‘Where was his humility, when he used the full stamp of his authority?’

Yet you could ask as follows: where was Moshe’s humility when he stood before Pharaoh and his voice thundered when he declared אֱלֹהִים - Elohim says “Let my people go!” Where was his humility, when he used the full stamp of his authority in order to quash the Korach Rebellion? Where was his humility, when he proudly stood on Mount Horeb to receive The Ten Commandments from יְהוָה - the LORD?

*Regarding Mount Horeb? As we know, Moshe visited the Mountain of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, with the burning bush. However, later as is in Deuteronomy 1:6: Moshe recounts אֱלֹהִים saying, “You have stayed at this mountain (Horeb) long enough; break camp and advance”. And in Deuteronomy 1:19: Refers to the departure fromMount Horeb’ to travel through the “great and terrible wilderness”. We should know that ‘Sinai’ has never been a name for a mountain, for the word ‘Sinai’ literary means “wilderness!” ‘Horeb’ was renamed long ago as ‘Sinai’, which was one would think for tourism reasons. Thus Mount Horeb is known as the “Mountain of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim”. And that was where Moshe received the Mitzvoth!

We need to understand that ‘Humility does not mean that the humble person lacks self-confidence’.

One may have a problem with these questions if one misunderstands the concept of humility. You see, humility does not mean that the humble person lacks self-confidence or feels that he or she is absolutely useless, far from it. Rather the truly humble person ascribes any ‘talents’ and ‘abilities’ they may have to the blessings that the Almighty has endowed them with. They lack all sense of ‘arrogance’, and they thank the Almighty for giving them that potential.

When a person complements a truly humble person, he does not think in their minds ‘Ah they’ve got it right, I am the greatest’ with full arrogance. Rather they say ‘thank you very much, Baruch יְהוָה - the LORD, it is thanks to the Almighty’ that I have ‘certain talents’ and ‘abilities’; it’s His greatness which has enabled me to fulfil some of my potential.

That is true humility, and therefore humility should never be a barrier to success and to remarkable achievement. We learn this all from Moshe Rabbeinu, being just one person, at one and the same time that he was our greatest achiever, and also one of the most humble person who has ever lived!

Shabbat Shalom - שַׁבָּת שָׁלוֹם.
