Re Tanakh versions:

Throughout this site I may use any of the following three versions of the Tanakh: 1. “Jewish Publication Society” (JPS-1917), 2“Mechon-Mamre.org (MEC), and 3. “Sefaria.org (SEF), three brilliant versions, although JPS-1917 is my preferred version!

Colour coded details of our beloved TaNaKh:

1. Torah = History & Law, 2. Nevi’im = The Prophets. 3. *Ketuvim = all other Writings.

*The Ketuvim - Includes, Poetical books - Psalms, Proverbs, Job, the Megillot, or Scrolls - Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations of Jeremiah, Ecclesiastes, and Esther, prophecy of Daniel, and history of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Chronicles I & II.

Please Note: Some alterations or (additions) have been made relating to ‘Names’ and ‘Attributes’ of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, having been corrected like it once was pre the “Masoretic Text”.

Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

 “Numbers  Chapter 4:21-49”

Part Two..

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

Continuing the detailed organization of the Tabernacle’s transport, the focus now shifts to the remaining two Levite families: Gershon and Merari. While the Kohathites carried the ‘furniture’ of the Sanctuary, these families were responsible for the structural components, the fabrics, ‘skins’, ‘boards’, and ‘pillars’. This section reinforces the Hebrew principle of Kavod Ha-Mishkan (the honour of the Tabernacle), showing that every ‘bolt’, ‘cord’, and ‘curtain’ is integral to the dwelling place of the Divine - יְהוָה - the LORD אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God), “Baruch Shem Kadosho” - “Blessed be His Holy Name”!

Below there are the chapters ‘Text’ followed by an Explanation based on JPS-1917 version of the Torah:

Verse 21: “And יְהוָה - the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:

Explanation: A new instruction begins, specifically addressing the administrative oversight for the remaining Levite clans.

Verse 22: 'Take the sum of the sons of Gershon also, by their fathers’ houses, by their families;

Explanation: The Gershonites are counted second, reflecting their status as the family of the firstborn son of Levi, though the Kohathites took precedence in the transport of the vessels.

Verse 23: from thirty years old and upward until fifty years old shalt thou number them; all that enter in to wait upon the service, to do service in the tent of meeting.

Explanation: Like the Kohathites, the work of the Gershonites required the strength and maturity of men in their prime (30 to 50).

Verse 24: This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, to serve, and for burdens:

Explanation: Their “burden” consisted of the “soft” materials of the Tabernacle the textiles and coverings.

Verse 25: they shall bear the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tent of meeting, its covering, and the covering of sealskin that is above upon it, and the screen for the door of the tent of meeting;

Explanation: They carried the various layers of the roof and the entrance curtain, which required careful folding and protection.

Verse 26: and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and whatsoever shall be afforded for them, therein shall they serve.

Explanation: This includes the massive outer perimeter of the courtyard, ensuring the boundary of the holy space was maintained even on the move.

Verse 27: At the commandment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burden, and in all their service; and ye shall appoint unto them in charge all their burden.

Explanation: While they did the heavy lifting, the Priests (Kohanim) remained the “managers” who directed exactly how the fabrics were handled.

Verse 28: This is the service of the families of the sons of the Gershonites in the tent of meeting; and their charge shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

Explanation: Ithamar (the youngest son of Aaron) is designated as the specific supervisor for the Gershonites and Merarites.

Verse 29: As for the sons of Merari, thou shalt number them by their families, by their fathers’ houses;

Explanation: The final group, the sons of Merari, are assigned the most physically demanding structural elements.

Verse 30: from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old shalt thou number them, every one that entereth upon the service, to do the work of the tent of meeting.

Explanation: Consistency in age requirements ensured a standardized workforce across all Levite families.

Verse 31: And this is the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tent of meeting: the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof;

Explanation: These are the “heavy bones” of the structure, the gold-plated wooden planks and the heavy silver sockets that formed the walls.

Verse 32: and the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service; and by name ye shall reckon the instruments of the charge of their burden.

Explanation: Because these items were numerous and varied (like pins and cords), they had to be inventoried “by name” so that not a single piece of the Sanctuary was lost.

Verse 33: This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service, in the tent of meeting, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest’.

Explanation: This concludes the specific job descriptions for the three Levite families under the priesthood's direction.

Verse 34: And Moses and Aaron and the princes of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohathites by their families, and by their fathers’ houses,

Explanation: The leadership (Moses, Aaron, and the tribal heads) now executes the command, beginning with the Kohathites.

Verse 35: from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entered upon the service, for work in the tent of meeting;

Explanation: This confirms that the strict age criteria were followed during the actual count.

Verse 36: and those that were numbered of them by their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty.

Explanation: This is the specific count of eligible Kohathite workers.

Verse 37: These are they that were numbered of the families of the Kohathites, all that did service in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of יְהוָה - the LORD by the hand of Moses.

Explanation: A summary statement confirming total obedience to the Divine word.

Verse 38: And those that were numbered of the sons of Gershon, by their families, and by their fathers' houses,

Explanation: The census moves to the Gershonites.

Verse 39: from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entered upon the service, for work in the tent of meeting,

Explanation: The same standard is applied here.

Verse 40: even those that were numbered of them, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, were two thousand and six hundred and thirty.

Explanation: The count for the Gershonite workers.

Verse 41: These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, all that did service in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of יְהוָה - the LORD.

Explanation: Reiteration of the legitimacy of the count.

Verse 42: And those that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, by their families, by their fathers’ houses,

Explanation: The final group, the Merarites, are counted.

Verse 43: from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entered upon the service, for work in the tent of meeting,

Explanation: The physical labour of carrying boards and pillars required full health and vigor.

Verse 44: even those that were numbered of them by their families, were three thousand and two hundred.

Explanation: Interestingly, the Merarites had the largest number of eligible men, which was necessary for the heaviest materials.

Verse 45: These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of יְהוָה - the LORD by the hand of Moses.

Explanation: Confirmation of the Merarite tally.

Verse 46: All those that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron and the princes of Israel numbered, by their families, and by their fathers' houses,

Explanation: A final summation of the entire Levite workforce.

Verse 47: from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entered in to do the work of service, and the work of bearing burdens in the tent of meeting,

Explanation: The two types of work are defined: “service” (assembly) and “bearing burdens” (transport).

Verse 48: even those that were numbered of them, were eight thousand and five hundred and fourscore.

Explanation: The grand total of the Levite workforce: 8,580 men.

Verse 49: According to the commandment of יְהוָה - the LORD they were appointed by the hand of Moses, every one to his service, and to his burden; with those that were numbered of him, as יְהוָה - the LORD commanded Moses.

Explanation: Every single man knew exactly what he was carrying. There was no room for ambiguity in the service of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim.

My Closing Message:

The meticulous detail of this census teaches us that every part of the Sanctuary matters. Whether one was carrying the golden Ark or a simple bronze peg, their service was “according to the commandment of יְהוָה - the LORD”. In the Hebraic view, there are no “small jobs” in a holy community. When each person knows their specific role and performs it with integrity, the entire congregation is able to move forward with the Presence of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim in their midst!
