“Leviticus Chapter 9”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction to Leviticus Chapter 9:

Leviticus Chapter 9 represents the “Eighth Day” (Shemini) - the climax of the entire Tabernacle project. For seven days, Aaron and his sons remained in seclusion, undergoing the process of sanctification. Now, on the eighth day, the theory of the sacrificial system meets its ultimate purpose: the visible revelation of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s (God’s) Glory (Kavod) to the entire nation! While Chapter 8 focused on the status of the priests, Chapter 9 focuses on their function. This chapter teaches that even after all the physical construction and ritual preparations are complete, the “fire” of the Divine is not something man can manufacture; it is a response to human obedience and humility. It is the day the Tabernacle truly becomes a “dwelling place”.

Let us read Leviticus Chapter 9, verses 1 to 24: (JPS-1917 version of the Torah). Below this chapter you will find my commentary on same.

1. “And it came to pass on the eighth day, that Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of Israel2. and he said unto Aaron: ‘Take thee a bull-calf for a sin-offering, and a ram for a burnt-offering, without blemish, and offer them before יְהוָה - the LORD. 3. And unto the children of Israel thou shalt speak, saying: Take ye a he-goat for a sin-offering; and a calf and a lamb, both of the first year, without blemish, for a burnt-offering; 4. and an ox and a ram for peace-offerings, to sacrifice before יְהוָה - the LORD; and a meal-offering mingled with oil; for today יְהוָה - the LORD appeareth unto you’. 5. And they brought that which Moses commanded before the tent of meeting; and all the congregation drew near and stood before יְהוָה - the LORD. 6. And Moses said: ‘This is the thing which the LORD commanded that ye should do; that the glory of יְהוָה - the LORD may appear unto you’. 7. And Moses said unto Aaron: ‘Draw near unto the altar, and offer thy ‘sin-offering’, and thy ‘burnt-offering’, and make atonement for thyself, and for the people; and present the offering of the people, and make atonement for them; as יְהוָה - the LORD commanded’. 8. So Aaron drew near unto the altar, and slew the calf of the sin-offering, which was for himself9. And the sons of Aaron presented the blood unto him; and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the base of the altar. 10. But the fat, and the kidneys, and the lobe of the liver of the sin-offering, he made smoke upon the altar; as יְהוָה - the LORD commanded Moses. 11. And the flesh and the skin were burnt with fire without the camp. 12. And he slew the burnt-offering; and Aaron’s sons delivered unto him the blood, and he dashed it against the altar round about. 13. And they delivered the burnt-offering unto him, piece by piece, and the head; and he made them smoke upon the altar. 14. And he washed the inwards and the legs, and made them smoke upon the burnt-offering on the altar. 15. And the people’s offering was presented; and he took the goat of the sin-offering which was for the people, and slew it, and offered it for sin, as the first. 16. And the burnt-offering was presented; and he offered it according to the ordinance. 17. And the meal-offering was presented; and he filled his hand therefrom, and made it smoke upon the altar, besides the burnt-offering of the morning. 18. He slew also the ox and the ram, the sacrifice of peace-offerings, which was for the people; and Aaron's sons delivered unto him the blood, and he dashed it against the altar round about, 19. and the fat of the ox, and of the ram, the fat tail, and that which covereth the inwards, and the kidneys, and the lobe of the liver. 20. And they put the fat upon the breasts, and he made the fat smoke upon the altar. 21. And the breasts and the right thigh Aaron waved for a wave-offering before יְהוָה - the LORD; as Moses commanded. 22. And Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people, and blessed them; and he came down from offering the sin-offering, and the burnt-offering, and the peace-offerings. 23. And Moses and Aaron went into the tent of meeting, and came out, and blessed the people; and the glory of יְהוָה - the LORD appeared unto all the people. 24. And there came forth fire from before יְהוָה - the LORD, and consumed upon the altar the burnt-offering and the fat; and when all the people saw it, they shouted, and fell on their faces”.

Commentary on Leviticus Chapter 9:1-24:

Verses 1-4: (The Call to the Eighth Day). The number eight in the Torah often signifies a new beginning that transcends the natural order (which is represented by the seven days of creation). Moses calls Aaron, his sons, and the elders of Israel together. Aaron is commanded to bring specific offerings: a calf for a sin-offering and a ram for a burnt-offering. Crucially, Moses explains the “why” behind these commands: “For today יְהוָה - the LORD appeareth unto you”. The rituals are not ends in themselves; they are the preparation for an encounter.

Verses 5-14: (The Order of Atonement). Aaron first offers sacrifices for himself. This is a profound lesson in leadership: one cannot mediate for a community until one has addressed their own shortcomings. Aaron offers the calf (sin-offering) and the ram (burnt-offering) exactly as commanded in the previous chapters. By following the “law of the offerings” to the letter, Aaron demonstrates that the priest is a servant of the Law, not its master.

Verses 15-21: (The Mediation for the People). After securing his own standing, Aaron turns to the offerings for the people: a goat, a calf, a lamb, and the meal-offering mixed with oil. The variety of these sacrifices covers the spectrum of the human experience atonement for specific wrongs, total dedication of the self, and a gift of gratitude from the produce of the earth. When Aaron lifts the “wave-offering” (Tenufah) of the breasts and the right thigh, he is physically presenting the best of the community’s resources to the Creator.

Verse 22: (The Priestly Blessing). Upon completing the sacrifices, Aaron lifts his hands toward the people and blesses them. This act bridges the gap between the altar and the congregation. The blessing is the verbal expression of the peace achieved through the sacrificial process. At this moment, Aaron descends from the altar, having fulfilled his ritual duties, yet the “Glory” has not as yet appeared.

Verse 23: (The Entrance and the Revelation). Moses and Aaron enter the Tent of Meeting together. This is a crucial detail the political leader (Moses) and the spiritual leader (Aaron) must be in harmony for the Presence to dwell in Israel. When they emerge and bless the people again, the text tells us “the glory of יְהוָה - the LORD appeared unto all the people”. This was not a private vision for the elite, but a collective experience for every soul present!

Verse 24: (The Divine Fire). The chapter concludes with a supernatural event: fire comes forth “from before יְהוָה - the LORD” and consumes the burnt-offering and the fat upon the altar. This “Heavenly Fire” is the Divine “signature” of acceptance. It proves that the Tabernacle is functional and that the bridge between Heaven and Earth is open. The response of the people is twofold: they “shouted” (in joy and awe) and “fell on their faces” (in humble submission).

My Closing Message:

Leviticus 9 teaches us that human effort is the vessel, but Divine Grace is the content. Aaron and the people did everything “as יְהוָה - the LORD commanded”, yet they had to wait for the fire to descend. This reminds us that while we are responsible for the “work of our hands” the ‘preparation, the ‘discipline’, and the ‘obedience’ the ultimate feeling of connection and the “spark” of inspiration being a gift from אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim, בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם - Baruch Shem - “Blessed be His Name”.

The “Eighth Day” reminds us that we should never settle for a routine of “seven days” the mundane cycle of life. We must always be preparing our “altar” so that we are ready for those moments when the Glory of the beloved Creator breaks through into our world. May we always strive to align our actions so closely with the ‘Divine’s Will’ that the “fire” of purpose and presence is felt in everything we do!
