Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

However, sadly both the later priests as well as our rabbis of long ago and of today have, and are shamefully disobeying this command of אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim, בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם קָדוֹשׁוֹ - ‘Baruch Shem Kadosho’ – ‘Blessed be His Holy Name!’

 “Isaiah Chap 60”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

Chapter 60 is a dramatic shift in tone. While the previous chapter focused on darkness and confession, this chapter is a song of triumph and light. It describes the restoration of Zion (Jerusalem) not just as a city, but as a global beacon. The “Redeemer” promised at the end of Chapter 59 has arrived, and His presence causes the city to literally glow with divine glory, attracting nations and wealth from every corner of the earth.

Let us now read Yeshayahu – Isaiah Chapter 60: (JPS-1917 version of the Tanakh).

1. “Arise, shine, for thy light is come, and the glory of יְהוָה - the LORD is risen upon thee.

2. For, behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the peoples; but upon thee יְהוָה - the LORD will arise, and His glory shall be seen upon thee.

3. And nations shall walk at thy light, and kings at the brightness of thy rising.

4. Lift up thine eyes round about, and see: they all are gathered together, and come to thee; thy sons come from far, and thy daughters are borne on the side.

5. Then thou shalt see and be radiant, and thy heart shall throb and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be turned unto thee, the wealth of the nations shall come unto thee.

6. The caravan of camels shall cover thee, and of the young camels of Midian and Ephah, all coming from Sheba; they shall bring gold and incense, and shall proclaim the praises of יְהוָה - the LORD.

7. All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered together unto thee, the rams of Nebaioth shall minister unto thee; they shall come up with acceptance on Mine altar, and I will glorify My glorious house.

8. Who are these that fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their cotes?

9. Surely the isles shall wait for Me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, for the name of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ - the LORD thy Elohim (God), and for the Holy One of Israel, because He hath glorified thee.

10. And aliens shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee; for in My wrath I smote thee, but in My favour have I had compassion on thee.

11. Thy gates also shall be open continually, day and night, they shall not be shut; that men may bring unto thee the wealth of the nations, and their kings in procession.

12. For that nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.

13. The glory of Lebanon shall come unto thee, the cypress, the plane-tree and the larch together; to beautify the place of My sanctuary, and I will make the place of My feet glorious.

14. And the sons of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee, and all they that despised thee shall bow down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee the city of יְהוָה - the LORD, the Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

15. Whereas thou hast been forsaken and hated, so that no man passed through thee, I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations.

16. Thou shalt also suck the milk of the nations, and shalt suck the breast of kings; and thou shalt know that I יְהוָה - the LORD am thy Saviour, and I, the Mighty One of Jacob, thy Redeemer.

17. For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver, and for wood brass, and for stones iron; I will also make thy officers peace, and righteousness thy magistrates.

18. Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, desolation nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise.

19. The sun shall be no more thy light by day, neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee; but יְהוָה - the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה thy glory.

20. Thy sun shall no more go down, Neither shall thy moon withdraw itself; for יְהוָה - the LORD shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.

21. Thy people also shall be all righteous, they shall inherit the land for ever; the branch of My planting, the work of My hands, wherein I glory.

22. The smallest shall become a thousand, and the least a mighty nation; I יְהוָה - the LORD will hasten it in its time”.

Let us now look at the ‘verse by verse Item and a good Explanation:

Verse 1: Arise, shine, for thy light is come, and the glory of יְהוָה - the LORD is risen upon thee.

Explanation: This is a command to Zion. After sitting in the dust of mourning and captivity, the city is told to stand up because אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה’s own “glory” has arrived to illuminate her.

Verse 2: For, behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the peoples; but upon thee יְהוָה - the LORD will arise, and His glory shall be seen upon thee.

Explanation: The prophet creates a contrast. While the rest of the world remains in spiritual or political "darkness," Zion becomes a solitary lighthouse of אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה’s presence.

Verse 3: And nations shall walk at thy light, and kings at the brightness of thy rising.

Explanation: The light isn't just for show; it is a guide. World leaders and foreign nations are drawn to the truth and peace found in Jerusalem.

Verse 4: Lift up thine eyes round about, and see: they all are gathered together, they come to thee; thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side.

Explanation: Isaiah tells the city to look at the horizon. The exiles who were scattered across the world are finally coming home.

Verse 5: Then thou shalt see and be radiant, and thy heart shall throb and enlarge; because the abundance of the sea shall be turned unto thee, the wealth of the nations shall come unto thee.

Explanation: This describes the physical and emotional reaction to restoration. The "enlarged heart" represents overwhelming joy as the world’s resources are brought to the city.

Verse 6: The multitude of camels shall cover thee, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah, all they from Sheba shall come; they shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praises of יְהוָה - the LORD.

Explanation: These represent the trading nations to the East and South. They aren’t coming to conquer, but to worship and bring gifts.

Verse 7: All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered together unto thee, the rams of Nebaioth shall minister unto thee; they shall come up with acceptance on Mine altar, and I will glorify My glorious house.

Explanation: The nomadic tribes bring their livestock for offerings. אֱלֹהִים declares that He will make His Temple (His “glorious house”) beautiful.

Verse 8: Who are these that fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows?

Explanation: The prophet sees ships on the Mediterranean sea. From a distance, their white sails look like clouds or a flock of doves returning home.

Verse 9: Surely the isles shall wait for Me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, for the name of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ - the LORD thy אֱלֹהִים, and for the Holy One of Israel, because He hath glorified thee.

Explanation: The “isles” (Western nations) use their best ships (Tarshish) to transport the Jewish people and their wealth back to Zion.

Verse 10: And strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee; for in My wrath I smote thee, but in My favour have I had compassion on thee.

Explanation: In the past, foreigners destroyed the walls; now, foreigners will help rebuild them. It marks the transition from אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s “wrath” to His “compassion.”.

Verse 11: Thy gates also shall be open continually, day and night they shall not be shut; that men may bring unto thee the wealth of the nations, and their kings led captive.

Explanation: In the ancient world, gates were shut at night for safety. Here, the gates stay open because there is no longer any threat only a constant flow of peace and resources.

Verse 12: For that nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.

Explanation: This is a warning that the new world order is centred on אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s presence in Zion. To reject this peace is to choose self-destruction.

Verse 13: The glory of Lebanon shall come unto thee, the cypress, the plane-tree, and the larch together; to beautify the place of My sanctuary, and I will make the place of My feet glorious.

Explanation: The finest timbers of Lebanon are brought to rebuild the Temple. The Earth is called the "place of My feet," showing that אֱלֹהִים is dwelling among men.

Verse 14: And the sons of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee, and all they that despised thee shall bow down themselves at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee The City of יְהוָה - the LORD, the Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

Explanation: The descendants of the former oppressors will show deep respect and acknowledge that Zion is the true dwelling place of אֱלֹהִים.

Verse 15: Whereas thou hast been forsaken and hated, so that no man passed through thee, I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations.

Explanation: The city's reputation is completely reversed. What was once a “ghost town” becomes a source of pride forever.

Verse 16: Thou shalt also suck the milk of the nations, and shalt suck the breast of kings; and thou shalt know that I יְהוָה - the LORD am thy Saviour, and I, the Mighty One of Jacob, thy Redeemer.

Explanation: This is a metaphor for the nations providing for Zion’s needs. It proves that אֱלֹהִים is indeed the “Redeemer”.

Verse 17: For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver, and for wood brass, and for stones iron; I will also make thy officers peace, and thy magistrates righteousness.

Explanation: This describes an upgrade in quality. Everything is being replaced by something more precious. Even the government (officers and magistrates) is replaced by Peace and Righteousness.

Verse 18: Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, desolation nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise.

Explanation: The physical walls are no longer just stone; they are the protection of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s “Salvation”.

Verse 19: The sun shall be no more thy light by day, neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee; but יְהוָה - the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy אֱלֹהִים thy glory.

Explanation: The light is now supernatural. The sun and moon are eclipsed by the sheer radiance of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s own presence.

Verse 20: Thy sun shall no more go down, neither shall thy moon withdraw itself; for יְהוָה - the LORD shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.

Explanation: Unlike the natural sun, אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s light never sets. The sorrow mentioned in Chapter 59 is officially over.

Verse 21: Thy people also shall be all righteous, they shall inherit the land for ever; the branch of My planting, the work of My hands, that I may be glorified.

Explanation: The citizens are now “all righteous”. They are like a garden that אֱלֹהִים Himself has planted and tended.

Verse 22: The smallest shall become a thousand, and the least a mighty nation; I יְהוָה - the LORD will hasten it in its time.

Explanation: Growth will be miraculous. Even the smallest family will become a massive tribe. אֱלֹהִים promises that when the right time comes, He will act quickly.

My Closing Message

Isaiah 60 is the ultimate vision of hope. It tells us that no matter how deep the “gross darkness” of the world becomes, אֱלֹהִים has a plan to bring about a light that can never be extinguished. It promises a world where violence is replaced by praise, and where the struggles of the past are forgotten in the glow of a new, eternal day.
